I personally feel that it may look bad on us, like we don't even care to try to answer. Of course, it depends a lot on the external supervisor's perspective. But I agree with your point of "putting us off" if we say something terribly wrong. Cheers!

Hey! I understand your feeling. But again, I refer to questions you truly do not know the answers to. In such cases, if you try to pretend like you do it will send out a bad signal. No one knows everything. A good researcher is someone that that is aware of what he/she knows. For all other questions you should nail them or be able to provide some clue. All the best!
