USA needs to start taking 4 Continents more seriously. Our ladies barely ever qualify for the Grand Prix Final anymore, which means the last big competition before Worlds is Nationals. Obviously a lot of the top skagers skip 4CC to have more time to train after Nats, but that means there's a big empty gap between when they have bigger international exposure (GP series) and actual worlds. We should be getting at least one medal every single year in ladies'. Japan has always taken it seriously and their girls are above us. Euro skaters have the Euros to really solidify their international experience for the season, but if our girls aren't really qualifying for GPF, then they have this big gap. As you said, our skaters 5-8 would be 12th place at another National Championships, so we need to stop sending those girls to 4CC and start sending our top girls (age eligible). No other country makes complaints about proximity time to another competition. We need more ISU medals.

The days when top skaters routinely skipped 4CC are already in the past. There weren't that many absences this year, and most of those were for training or school-related reasons (or, in Mariah's case, probably not wanting to go to Korea).

BTW, several adult male skaters have told me they wanted to skate as kids, but their dad's wouldn't let them, because it was "too gay" or they didn't want their sons picked on for the "stigma" of being a male skater. 😞 🤷 Same with a friend I had in college, who I taught to skate. Sad, as he took to it more quickly than any other friends I've taught. Incredible natural balance, especially for someone 6'6"! Really, really hope this is changing.

The vast majority of russian universities are state-owned. Half of the places there are paid by the government and half are by students themselves. Alina gets a full ride if she passes her exams (which she did) because she has an olympic medal. Having test scores public is no big deal as every uni's admission rankings are public and show every candidate's scores in relevant subjects and individual accomplishments. As a russian I personally don't understand the hate. She's still a teenager, the only questionable thing she's done was that pro-constitution add. She has time to grow and change. Bullying and hating on her will not help.
@linamory5444 жыл бұрын
@Fiona well it's important to remember that she is the victim of such coaching practices or at the very least a person who was brought up in this environment, so she was probably just repeating things she was constantly told by her coaches. But I meant questionable in a political sense, since I saw some discussion od her going into the propaganda business and russian parliament and such.
@Garnet3274 жыл бұрын
@Fiona I think you're getting it all wrong. Probably because you're a foreigner. As for "Just close your mouth and do not eat". In Russia it's interpreted mostly as a joke. I mean, honestly, is there anyone who would take it literally? We are used to these sayings and do not see them as something offensive, cause we get the main point behind it. Besides, we had this icon actress Faina Ranevskaya who was also famous for her aphorisms (check the wiki, though that's not the whole list). I wonder if you'd get offended had you heard them. As for constitution. As I had already said in other thread where you commented as well, "Alina's a teenager who had been invested in sports all her life and doesn't see much beyond that. I mean, she probably has no time and interest to read some analysis about those amendments to constitution. And the text under that post was quite neutral, basically patriotic and simply encouraging people to go and vote, not to ignore the elections. The only "mistake" she made was mentioning Putin. She thanked him for support and perspective, whatever that means. So her only mistake is her ignorance". And the LGBTQ part you mention is hardly the main aspect why this amendment is wrong. I mean, it is wrong on so many levels, but the LGBTQ part isn't among the top 10 for sure, and not because "everyone in Russia is a homophobe", but because it affects even more basic civil rights, you don't have to be gay to be offended by it, all you have to be is a citizen, so gays and straight, white and of color are affected alike. So trying to use LGBTQ card is like grasping at straws when complaining about her loyalty to Putin. I'm not blaming her for now. There's still time to change. But I'm afraid this loyalty is like a decease and it affects all our sportsmen. Somehow they can't be as multitasking as Nathan Chen for example. They usually get heavily invested only in sports, paying minimum attention to education. And all these degrees are mostly fictional, farce. I doubt she or anyone else will openly go against Putin, cause that day their careers will be over. And I wouldn't be surprised to see her or Kostornaia one day as a member of State Duma. Kostornaia already has a photo with caption "Why not?". Yeah, indeed. As if we don't have enough sportsmen without any understanding how simple citizens live deciding what is best for our nation.
@05narmina4 жыл бұрын
I also do not support this hate and bullying towards a teenager for god's sake. She is an athlete, not a professor. Not everyone is Nathan Chan. However, I must agree that despite supporting Alina, I have never liked her interviews. She really needs to work on it, become more flexible in her answers, more approachable, more engaging. I hope she will gain these skills with time. That being said, I m hoping to see her on ice, but with Eteri's approach it is not possible, I guess. She should have switched coaches. I believe she can totally be prepped for the upcoming olympics, but it seems Eteri does not care.

@@margaritadanova4764 the crowd is way bigger for senior test skates, so it will still be different performing there. I think because there are so many contenders for the Olympic team and not enough spots for them that it's useful to start seeing the top contenders skate against each other now (even without being scored). There's also the fact that we still don't know if Alena got the 3a back, and how many quads Sasha or Anna have, so the fact that Kamila has her 4t back may look impressive in comparison.

In terms of figure skating and training, I think with Plushenko, although his style was never my "thing" wow, he knew how to jump (his jump technique was amazing) and he knew how to *sell* his program - actually I've been re-watching Petrenko and he *presented* - projected many of these skaters could learn a lot - even just by watching old You Tube clips. Yes, yes, the USA men, need to push and sell sell and find your own style.

You know, the whole thing with Zmeskal (who I don’t have an emotional attachment to, admittedly), reminds me a lot of what I see in abusive families and how all sorts of bad behavior is “learnt” and passed down. However, I think a key distinction has to be made between explaining and giving context vs minimizing or excusing it. Ultimately she is an adult, and has to be held responsible to how she treated kids. Also thinking back to the Maggie Haney situation, and how her actions might not necessarily be significantly worse than other coaches/gyms (GAGE/AOGC for example), that might seem “unfair” if you don’t punish everyone at once, but sometimes you have to start somewhere to break the whole thing open, and other people/issues start emerging. Systemic change takes time and is hard. (Disclaimer: I don’t know a lot about the nuances of the gymnastics debacle, but I do have quite a bit of experience working with abuse victims...it’s hard not to notice the similarities that pop up everywhere)

According to Vincent's IG, his FS was choreographed by Misha Ge. No info about his SP though. I'd say neither of those programs fit his skating/quality of movement, but then again, I wouldn't even know which type of style would. Maybe something shticky such as some of Boyang's old programs, I mean, him and Vincent are pretty similar in their body language, although Boyang seems less awkward. I feel he should stay away from overly dramatic and emotional material, because his interpretation always ends up looking way too cheesy to be enjoyable to watch, although he's certainly putting his everything into it. And I have to say, I'm surprised you see improvement in his jumps. Almost all quads, including his 4Lzs, were UR or at least borderline (hard to tell because of the bad video quality) and he still had that 'snap' of the ankle upon landing. He managed to stabilise his 3A again, though, so there's that.

@@evanperilstein5308 i did'nt know a post could be responded to with a :'I don't like the way you comminicate, pet peeve' I thought it was funny in a snarky way but now, I think: That's just dismissive and plain rude. That's a viewer responding to a video you made! I love TSL but the mean streak I can do without. By all means, be edgy but have some grace. Brian Brian said nothing mean or derrogatory about Dave or Jonathan and is hit with a dismissive put down by the creators of a channel he likes. How about just ignoring it if it annoys you. I like TSL. It's always a delight when they post videos. But the slight unmitigated increase in snark towards viewers in the comment section? Nope. Maybe I got it all wrong but from now on, I will just watch and not comment.

Kim Zmeskal is not racist just because she was smart enough to know what the judges wanted and cut the gymnast's braids. I competed til level 9 (My mother is white and father black) and we were judged on far less. We knew that as gymnasts we would be judged for things other than what we put on the floor mat. My coach was honest with us even at the age I was when I competed. My white teammates were told to change things, appearance-wise, also. Dominique Moceanu never sad a bad word about Bela or Marta until she was denied that Nationals. So don't call her queen. She' a two-faced.
@AuroraR4 жыл бұрын
Kim Zmeskal should have informed Kennedy that her braids were to long before leaving for Nationals. My coaches always talked about our appearance and what we wore before competitions. I really doubt that Kim had not seen her hair before nationals. She should have said something before the day of nationals if it was a problem. No one has the right to cut off someone's hair at any time. It doesn't matter the ethnicity of the person. She should have kept her hands to herself! It was cruel and wrong! It probably messed with her mentally on the day of nationals. It’s disturbing and disgusting that you’re trying to excuse her behavior as acceptable.
@toriatoria93174 жыл бұрын
@@AuroraR Learn to read. Nowhere did I say it was acceptable. I said it wasn't racist and Baker implied it was. Baker also said Florida was racist because it used black gymnasts to further white gymnasts scores. If you spend any time being part of a team in almost every sport you are expected to help your teammates. In baseball, you may have to bunt to get the tying run in scoring position. In basketball, you may be expected to pass the ball because a player has an open shot with a higher percentage of hitting it. In College gymnastics, you may have a better floor routine but a weaker gymnast will get a boost and in the end, the team 's score will be helped. It's called being a team player. Florida tied for a National title using that method. Bridgette Caquatta's gift 9.950. I know what real racism is. I have been called the N word. Not getting your own way and blaming racism every time you don't get your own way is why so many people disregard it when it really happens.

Toria Toria actually by justifying what Kim did by calling her “smart enough” and giving examples of other times appearances had to be changed you literally justifying it. It’s like saying stealing is wrong but when this one person did it they were smart because they needed the item they stole and they got it. That may not have been your intention but it’s what you did. Sorry not sorry.
