At my first office job I saw a donation for cancer treatment for a coworker that had been working there for nearly 30 years via a raffle. Winner got $100 out of the "lottery." I stared at it for so long that my boss asked what was up. "Why doesn't the company just donate another $100?" She took a moment, re-read the sign, and then after a while walked quietly back to her office. Millions of dollars every year and they wanted people who made between 20-50k a year to donate, to possibly win $100 of the donation for someone's cancer treatment. Later that year they made a commercial with the CEO showing off a classic car collection, and I truly began to hate some folk. This gave me a flashback to that.

You can do whatever you want as an executive, you could give Jimmy more PTO with the snap of your fingers but you choose not to. Bureaucracy doesn’t actually matter, due process doesn’t actually matter, things can happen instantly when it involves rich people, and it does. Bureaucracy and waiting is a facade to keep poor people in place, you don’t actually need to wait at a bank for hours and hours or wait anywhere, company policy is a tool to keep poor people in their place, it can be disregarded at any time when it comes to the CEO’s son. @@ladyalicent705 Not quite. Only some states are at-will like that. Even then, the rules give employers a lot of discretion over firing, but *not* if there's specific proof they targeted a protected class. The POV character's testimony of this conversation could be really useful in building a case that it wasn't random or about poor work output, but was targeting due to disability. The only thing I'm really in doubt of is whether it's financially feasible or a good idea to launch a lawsuit when you're in intense physical and financial distress (it helps if your lawyer is pro bono) and whether you'll get anything more useful than court costs when you're done.

I had a similarly mind blowing conversation with my boss. I am a middle manager and she (an upper manager) asked me to ask a couple of my reports to donate their PTO to an employee who was hospitalized, in a COMA.

When my daughter was born, I managed to use my PTO up every week as it collected. I earned 5 hours of PTO per week, so instead of saving it up, I reduced my hours to 7 hours per day, so I could leave an hour early every day during her first year! Took me a long time to convince HR however, because no one had ever used it that way before. Employers aren’t used to thinking outside the box.

That's when you look up the company profit for last year and relay that information. "The company can afford the donation, due to the company's pay of their employees, I cannot."

Going through this right now sort of. My dad had a stroke a few weeks back and there's a lot of meetings and decisions I need to make with siblings and doctors. Worse, he has no will so on top of that ive got a lot of legal issues I need to resolve with my lawyer like power of attorney and who gets what if he where to ,God forbid, pass away. I'm actually worried that my boss will can me because I've been calling off a lot recently. He called me drunk one night and basically made me out to be a "lazy bum" and "not a team player", I almost lost my cool then and there, but bottom line is that this shit is very real. "We're like a family" until you actually need something, then they kick you while you are down.

Just had this conversation with my wife. Most kids don’t really care that much what their parents’ jobs were - they form their assessment of their parents based on the times they spent with them.

My mom had breast cancer 25 yrs ago. She was diagnosed shortly after starting a new job so she wasn’t eligible for vacation or sick time yet. The bank paid for all her time off and still gave her the vacation and sick time earned during that time.
