In this video Kelly ties up a simple Hare's Ear Jig that works extremely well for a general mayfly imitation as well as an attractor.

Thanks Kelly, I enjoyed this vid. First time I ever played the Kelly Galloup Drinking Game. That's when the viewer takes a drink every time you begin a sentence but don't finish it, instead breaking off into another sentence. If you don't finish that second sentence, and break off into yet another sentence, it's two drinks. I was shit faced before you got 5 minutes into the vid

Great rendition on a classic pattern. Agree on the soul. It is good to see some detail in the fly box even if the trout don't seem to notice..... Also thanks for doing the Interview with April V. Enjoyed the trip down memory lane and a look at the changes over the seasons.

I switched over to all jig hook euro flies and tight line nymphing about 4 years ago. I only get a handfuls of hours a year on a trout stream and it’s dramatically increased my catch rate.

Same. I feel like I cover water more efficiently. Shorter casts make me more aware. I loose less flies, feel more strikes and catch more fish!

As a fenchie, filling entire boxes of jigs for euronymphing, i wasn't expecting such a fly! Will give it a try for sure, and tie a version with pardo fo the tail also. BTW these jig nymphs are great for sight fishing, with small beads. The hookset ratio is a little better than standard hooks, and it really helps on tricky graylings. Happy new year, from France

i use a orange craft bead as a hotspot ,i first made it decades ago when brass beads first came out at flaming gorge,to copy a friend of mine using a egg size of powerbait.I think i invented the hotspot and have used it every since.Not sure the date but when brass beads first became popular.

Great vid Kelly, as always showing a bunch of good techniques, one I learned from FFF, is you can roll up dubbing normally on the thread sparsely then just complete a small dubbing loop with the dubbing noodle to make it really tight and small diameter. Take care…merry Xmas 🎄

I completely agree on the effectiveness of euro nymphs being a bit offensive haha, I love spending time making a realistic and detailed nymph but then watch some guy with a perdigon that took 2 minutes to tie catch more fish than me 😂 I like your take on jig flies better, it’s got more class!

I put my slotted beads on slot forward. If it is the right way up it engages the bend solidly and doesn’t cover the eye. If it’s upside down it will slide over the eye.

Thanks for no ads. Also, good to see the metric size on beads. I will never buy a size 9/64 bead again. Any points on fishing Euro from a boat? I guess you must anchor, but then you are floating over the fish.

Hi Kelly could you do a video on how jig nymphs fish and ride different in the water to normal style nymphs or one on how to choose the hooks and beads for flies I have had trouble get some beads on a hook thanks Kelly
@josephgrandpre1761
@josephgrandpre1761 3 жыл бұрын
They ride with the point up, so less snag, better hookset ratio. About the sizes, it differs depending on the hook brand. I'm using Hanak hooks ( Let's say 400BL is the standard jig hook) and Hanak beads (You can find them on Troutline website for example). For Hooks #18-16, use 2-2,5 mm beads (2mm ideally). For #16 use ideally 2,5 mm, #14 ideally 3mm, #12 ideally 3,5mm, #10 ideally 4 mm. Works like charm for hanak, bu i had some troubles with some other brands, for example hanak hooks and Sybai beads.

Being a jig hook doesn't the hook point fish up and so shouldnt the legs have been on the other side (top or convex side of the hook)? You tied them on the bottom (concave) side of the hook which to me looks like it's going to be the top of the fly when fished.

Kelly: how can you know if a nymph is drifting upside down? Jig flies don't , but I know nymphs tied on standard hooks can and do. I've tied some pretty "sexy' or realistic nymphs that either rode inverted or probably flipped around in the current (doing some observation, it seemed to have this tendency). Can we infer than nymphs might as well be 'tied in the round'? these jig nymphs are mostly tied without a top or a bottom.

There’s a company that sells these. I have a clamping vise and it works great. Just unscrew the rod out of the clamp. Google The Granite Fly

@kelly curious to obtain your input on an overwhelming push here in Michigan by guides on the PM to ban this method of fly fishing. From my understanding it doesn’t fit their standards and isn’t fly fishing. Would love the input of a Michigan native.

Well that's a tricky one as some of us (MI boys) were the ones who actually started/popularized this style of fishing, mono and level lines made to fish lead then tight line. I am pretty sure Ray Schmidt and Bruce Richards were the ones who invented the level fly line which are now called competition lines, before that it was Stren or Amnesia, I think Joe Humphreys started the Amnesia thing in the early 70's? Anyway I like the idea of getting away from the slinky down stream hook set deal of the 80's and 90's if that is still being done but it is the set not the system that is the problem. I did an article in Michigan outdoors mag in the 90's that said we were snagging (in the mouth ) 50 % of our steelhead, but I was misquoted I said 80 to 90 percent. By simply setting up instead of the (down stream swing of the rod on your hook set) you could break bottom and detect strike and stop hooking fish in the side of the mouth which is what we were doing. That being said I am not sure about regulating styles. All of them can be done right or wrong and snaggers are a sub species of bottom feeders and no amount of regulations will stop that jackasses from poaching. KG

I appreciate your feedback and input. I agree any method can be utilized with the wrong intention. Heck I’ve seen people with floating WF lines snagging. I sure enjoy using the method legally but cringe when others say ban it because it’s snagging. I often ask myself if this is the true intention of their quest to ban it or is it due to its effectiveness? Thank you again!

Novice question. With the legs up as done here, is the fly emulating a dead bug?
@harkenm

The hook is designed to drift with the point up. So some people tie them realistically like he did. So the answer to your question is no.
