Kelly, I'm enjoying your series on hackle and the other non tying videos you are doing. I know it'll help your business sell more hackle, but despite that, the knowledge you share in each video is awesome. Thank you for putting in the time. Sometimes I put your tying videos on in the background, because of the detail you put in them, I learn something every time.

Thank you for taking about hackel, and other fly tying topics. UTUBE would have been very helpful 50 years ago when I started tying. Sharing your knowledge is a blessing to those starting to tie today and in the future. 👍

For real. Kids these days have no idea how spoiled they are getting to learn how to tie with KZbin videos

Kelly when you first started doing videos, I was not a fan. Kids were asking me what a Sex Dungeon was supposed to be, amongst other things and when I teach children to tie, I did not need that. So here I am a year later trying out the videos and for the most part people like myself can watch your videos with no fear. Thank you so much, because you are a very good instructor. I'm in Canada so I will probably never see a live show. Cree has cost me so much money since I discovered a Hackle Farm here in Canada who has beautiful Cree. It was actually very reasonably priced at the time. It jumped up when that Hackle shortage came along. A number of Cree finally came available but the price (especially the saddles) became very expensive. Because Saddle Hackle had such a reputation with the Hair Salons they paid higher. This increased the price of course and I started paying almost double! Then I realized Dark Barred Ginger, looked very similar. I started buying that neck and saddle! I might have been born at night but not last night!😂 My favorite ( and only) Canadian Hackle Farm went broke! He had a great product but he couldn't stand the thought he was not getting the Retail price! So he was trying to sell his capes and saddles both to shops and to Joe Smith general public. You cannot compete with your customers!!! Root River bought out everything that was left of the livestock and hundreds of capes and saddles. To Cree or not to Cree! Sadly that actually became a question. Now I have two Cree Saddles and honestly, I like neither of them. If they are selling a light Cree or a dark Cree, they should label it as such.

I recently won an auction of fly-tying materials, which included more than 130 capes - all clearly from a smaller. older producer from 40 years ago or more. They were nicely prepared - a lot of the necks even included the skin of the head, cleaned around the eye sockets, and these were smaller birds than what is availablle now, but the feathers were clearly selected for tying. There was an amazing variety of colors and patterns, but more than half were brown, reddish, or some shade between them. Several grizzlies and cream, and a few furnace and badger - but maybe two Cree, and that might be being generous. I'm just an amateur tyer, and these old capes will be great for improving my technique and playing with old-school Catskill patterns. I can't justify the cost of these high-end hackles for working flies, and my skill-level might not do them justice, but it's really helpful to have a more clearly defined understanding of what I'm looking at. Thanks for another informative video.

William, that is really cool, I love old materials. May be some old European stuff in there. I would love to see a pic of them. Who knows what you have in there. Thanks for watching. Kelly

I guess my question is, do the fish really care? It seems to me that once you wrap that hackle you won't see much of that coloring with the barbs all spread out, but I've been wrong before. Keep the good stuff coming KG.

It really seems like a color for the tyer, not for the fish...

Informative video. I would be very interested in a video on the Coch Y Bonddu cape. I am very fortunate to own 2 true coch y bonddu capes. A true coch y bondhhu hackle has a black list or centre with black tipped red game fibres. They are extremely rare. Most tyers will never see a single true coch y bonddu hackle. Rarer still is the oddly named kneecap hackle which is the reverse of coch y bonddu ie red black red. There are only a few of these hackles in existence today which are in the HQ of the fly fishers club in London. I came across my own Coch y Bonddu capes in a very old fly tying kit that I bought off ebay for £120 in 2016. It was a super bargain and I sold about half of it. A vulturine guinea fowl skin made over £200. I almost sold the best coch y bonddu cape for £100 but changed my mind last minute.

Awesome vid, but I’m still confused about the black barred finger and Cree differences, it sounded like you described them the same, would be sweet if you could make another video of just those two!

When tying feather wing flies, I know hen capes are preferable but is there a lot of difference in using feather tips from rooster saddles or rooster capes?
@TheSlideinn
@TheSlideinn 2 жыл бұрын
Al, you can use rooster but the tips are so thin now days that they barely show up, for that matter many of the hen hackles are rather thin as well. Kelly

I enjoy the non typical colors, mostly because I like looking at it and tying with it. I’m not one to collect for the sake of collecting. I buy it because It makes my bench time more enjoyable, don’t really care what the fish might think sometimes. But the black market has priced me out of being able to buy the 4 letter word stuff. So F-U resellers! I’m not above dyed colors. I bought a heritage med barred ginger dyed olive from slide inn and it’s an extremely sexy neck! Thank you to Dr. Whiting and Mr. Galloup for bringing them to market!

The key to good communication is brevity and clarity, Is it I, we , us or they? You talk way too much without a point and are definitely not clear.

Robert, Thanks for the tip, you are probably right I do wonder off at times. You should make a video and post it up so everyone can see how its done properly. Let me know when it is done and I will post it up. Kelly

Here's a tip - stop watching if you don't like it. There are plenty of channels out there that don't give as much information. Maybe then you'll be able to keep up. It's amazing to me that you would make such a complaint about a channel providing so much information for free. I guess there are just a lot of 💩heads out there, probably shouldn't be surprised that we'd find one in KZbin comments😂 I'm watching because of how he wanders in his explanations. Maybe if you listen (one of the keys to communication you seem to have left out) you'll learn something
