Yes, it is such an extraordinary film. I hadn't heard of it before. It's as flawless as a film can get. The acting is the type I really love--perfectly modulated. It's sad how often histrionics are taken for good acting. Good acting comes deep from within the soul when the actor is the person and the slighest gesture tells you everything about them

Thank you, thank you, thank you. What an unexpected masterpiece! Loretta Young and Spencer Tracy both outdo themselves. Not a waster moment! Borzage didn't do too bad either.

The screenplay of this movie is wonderful and without the painfully predictable dialog and sap had the movie been made after the "Code". Excellence in acting give an early confirmation of the brilliance of both of the star performers. The topics in the play ring with relevance in today's world. (I always remain mystified that so many of the comments about the "movies" are actually gossip and opinions about the actors private lives, however long dead.)This movie is a real treat.

I am just reading a terrific new biography of Tracy it is long but superb. Tracy fell hard for Young, they both were devout Catholics. Tracy was married to a non-Catholic and had a deaf son who also had a myriad of physical problems. The book stated that Young dumped Tracy after going to confession and the Priest would not forgive her sin of adultery. After that she fell for Gable and had an illegitimate child whom she later adopted. She remained a devout Catholic all her life.

Orirignally released in October 1933, this is the 1938 reissue (the original "torch lady" logo was slightly different, and had the legend, "A Columbia Production").

@flytwa707 That is not what I've read about Spencer. He was with Kathryn Hepburn for 25yrs and he stated that he wanted to marry her later on but she refused. What I just read is that he and Loretta had a brief relationship and decided not to continue since they were both Catholic and neither believed in divorce.

@AlenaJolie /spence and kathryn's relationship was just for show. she was a lesbian all the way. the studios put them together to cover this up....
