I know this is meant for hams who will mostly need close range, but have you tested this at longer ranges? I'm curious how well it works at say 10-20ft distance as common in home inspection applications. I'm also curious about accuracy. How do the measured values compare against say, a calibrated thermocouple?

Thermal imaging has been part of my day job for the past 17 years, providing training as well as scans on industrial facilities, using name brand cameras (that you’d recognize) ranging from $500 - $40,000. Given the cost, that’s actually fairly impressive. I wouldn’t use it as a professional tool, but for the hobbyist… - N7CCD
@TheSmokinApe8 ай бұрын
Yeah, this is hobby grade for sure but I have to admit... I thought it was pretty cool.
@arnoldgrubbs20059 ай бұрын
Emissivity has to do with the type of material you are trying to measure the temperature of. A shiny surface will have a different amount of IR energy emitted than a surface that is rusted, or painted, metal or plastic, ect.. at the same temperature. Allows you to calibrate for the material you are interested in testing.
@TheSmokinApe8 ай бұрын
Ah, thanks for the info Arnold 👍
@button-puncher8 ай бұрын
Yeah, it can be really weird. If you have something with a somewhat shiny enclosure, the IR camera will do a really poor job measuring the temp of that enclosure. Put a piece of flat black gaffers tape on the enclosure and BAM, good readings.
@button-puncher8 ай бұрын
@@TheSmokinApe I should also say, flat black spray paint makes a big difference in getting good readings. It's usually cheap and dries fast which is a nice bonus.
@HughD7 ай бұрын
When I was working in the field, we'd place a piece of duct tape on a reflective/shiny surface and shoot it to get the temp. I think we'd use an emissivity of about .9 for the tape, but it was far more accurate than just trying to get the temp of a low-e surface as it is without the tape.

I love when ppl testing stuff without reading the manual or checking the functions first place.... the temp reading change is right under the HOLD/Range button.

Grabbing the thermal photo off via the USB connect is handy. Have you tried connecting to your smartphone via OTG? Figure in field use good to not have to lug around a real computer to plug in to. Nice price for that resolution too.

that a nice meter. never saw one with IR camera . now you can check your connections . a bad one heats up. I have a Flair . use for my electrical work. can test UNUN and Balun as well. you can see wire heat up and or the core. my 10 AWG wind ones the wire stays cool and the core heats up after a wile. very handy to have. test your cores on the antenna kits you have. make a good video on core heating. FT8 heats the small ones up . makes a nice red ring on IR camera. get to hot and SWR will spike . will be great to show why we down rate for digital and modes like AM/FM . have some fun with that meter. 73's

WHAT? No built in compass? LOL Looks good, but I'd be a bit concerned that it's "rechargeable" and does not use regular batteries. If you're out in the field, the worst feeling is when you need a tool and find it needs recharging and thus rendering you helpless.
