Thank you! Very creative! Should the left side Mode/ Status LED above the LCD light up red while changing and then green when charging complete? Reason I'm asking because I just got this brand new FT70DR and using just the SAD-25 a/c adapter that came with it to charge but no red LED is lit during charging. According to the manual the Mode/Status red LED should come on...

Seeing the difference, couldn't you technically have a combo balun/unun by using a DPDT switch?
@TheSmokinApe4 күн бұрын
I guess it’s possible
@garytruss52534 күн бұрын
The coax choke balun only attenuates current on the outer shield and maintains the 50 ohm characteristic impedance of the transmission line. The bifillar wound choke depending on the wire gauge and wire separation distance may not. The bifillar wound choke is more temperamental regarding the core material due to the fact that it is working as a transformer with only differential mode currents flowing, whereas the coax choke only works on common mode currents flowing on the outside of the braid. The common mode coaxial choke is therefore inert to the transmission line and behaves as if it is not even there with only the extra length of coax used to construct it as an attenuation loss. The core material used to make one is therefore not critical in regards to differential (normal mode) of operation however the choice of a material that has a high impedance to the frequency being used is advantageous.
@junquecollector4 күн бұрын
To really characterize real world performance, you need to look at the attenuation the 20 meter signal at the adjacent ham bands. In the case of the 20 meter filter, it is down a little over 30 dB at 18 MHz., a decent reduction, and it should be a lot better at 15 or 40 meters. I have experienced operating a 20 watt 20 meter station using a very similiar designed filter, and my 20 meter signal caused severe interference to a 17 meter station operating 200 feet away. The 17 meter station then moved to15 meters and all was well. In that instance, it may have been that the station on 17 meters could have stayed on 17 if he had been using a bandpass filter as well.
@junquecollector5 күн бұрын
The reflector becomes more important on the lower bands, especially 80 and 160. Not just a single wire, but multiple, all parallel to the radiating element. Ground losses go up as frequency goes down and the closer the antenna to the ground (in terms of wavelength), the more RF power that gets absorbed bythe ground losses.

@@KE8ODY-WV-Ares-Ham-Dad-3O4 this won’t show the waterfall from your rig, the dongle is a separate separate receiver that you control with the software. There are some some 3rd party switches that you allow you to share the same antenna with the SDR and Rig.

Can I ask the simple question - given this style of winding, I assume I locate the pairs that conduct and map them 1:1 to the coax I feed in/out? I've measured mine, and indeed if I measure one side, I get -35db, but both sides balance out and I go < 1 dB.

Most businesses know that news customers can be pure gold. Those businesses do things to keep those customers. I have not seen a lot of that in the ham community. Back in the day, people bought from stores and there would be knowledgeable sales people. Now people buy from Amazon. So channels like this are SUPER HELPFUL. Dear Mr. SmokinApe First off, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I would like to ask a couple of questions about "multi-tap" ununs. I only see a few HAMs build and use their own but never any retail options, so I wonder are there drawbacks to them. Also with say a 7 tap unun, is it likely that it could replace the need for a tuner? I have asked those other HAMs who posted theor builds of multi-taps but no reply. Thank you kndly Gary

I think your comments are relevant but not entirely accurate. For instance there are several Baofeng models that receive air bands such as the BF-F8HP Pro. Also there are several Baofeng models that allow you skip frequencies or stored channels during scans. You are correct about digital and trunked; however, some communities still use analog. Even in Tucson where I live, TPD and TFD don’t use analog anymore, but there are suburbs and other community agencies that use analog. And many communities will repeat to analog. I am not suggesting you will get a lot, but I receive plenty. I would do more research and revise some comments. As far as front loading and spurious emissions, I cannot comment as an expert, but I have seen most experts say there are issues.

Hey DP. I'm pretty sure I covered the local rebroadcast on FM Analog, but that's not a guarantee. I also have done videos on using radio reference so folks can see whats available. It's an older video so I am pretty sure at that time Air Band was very limited on Baofengs... If you you a feng, awesome... I am glad you are having luck BUT as someone who had been scanned for years AND has done the research they simply are poor scanners.
