The Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 AWD is a nice daily driver, a comfy cruiser, and a good looking everyday runabout. But compared to very stiff competition from Audi and BMW it is shockingly overpriced. Zack and Matt explain why that might be and what went wrong with Infiniti’s most popular sport coupe.
Infiniti provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

I feel with so little coupes left this car in 2024 still holds it’s own. I have a 2017 Accord 6-6 Coupe and I still love the look of a coupe along with its power, don’t like the artificial sound & love the N/A V6 in the J35 Unfortunately with the decay of most cities infrastructure any car with even 45 series rubber , your getting flats all the freakin time. I have had 3 flat tires in the last 2 yrs so I find myself wanting a SUV and I don’t even have kids.

Thanks for reviewing my car! I will say, you're spot on most points - these cars are definitely way overpriced if you buy them new. However, if you manage to get one used like I did, for around $30k, and then modify it, they are absolute gems. The reason why is because you can make tremendous power with these platforms with just a few bolt-ons and a tune. Even adding lowered suspension and swapping tires makes a huge difference. You really do have to modify these cars to unlock their true potential.

Upshifts are instant with power, except that traction control seems to interrupt the change to 3rd occasionally. Turning T/C off or short-shifting slightly fixes that. When you back off the shift is noticeably slower. Downshifts are not that different from any BMW/ZF I have experienced...slow. I could never describe the steering as slow in Sport or Sport+. It is hyper-comfy and a joy to own and drive. But it is an 8/10ths car. But 6/10ths is massively faster than any other car on road and is border-line dangerous! However, I have had mine for 4 years and I plan to keep it for many more years. I've got a 2008 G37S coupe (6mt) with 200k miles on it. While I've had to fix some known issues (clutch slave, subframe/diff bushings) that any car is bound to have in one form or another, it's been incredibly reliable and it's held up very well. Nissan is definitely lagging behind because of their continuation of platforms and components for far longer than they probably should, but they do build a solid, high quality vehicle when they put the effort into it. The platform itself is kinda great, good suspension, good balance, versatile in application from the Z all the way to the extended sedans (and to a certain extent the SUV's as well). But it needs a real refresh. And yet the new Z is still going to be on it. Really I'm not sure what Nissan's next move will be from here.

@@FlameOnTheBeat nice! I drive 25k miles a year in mine, and I beat the piss out of it every time I drive. our cars are mechanically identical, from the suspension arms to the engine/trans, so I'll offer some tips in case you haven't hit these issues yet: Z Speed CMAK delete kit when your slave goes out. It's a matter of time (assuming it hasn't already), and the Z Speed kit doesn't require adjustment for clutch wear like the Z1 kit does. Installs a clutch fork and typical external slave. I really like the exedy S2 quiet clutch and billet steel lightened flywheel (19lbs, single-mass) that I got with it. And poly subframe and diff mounts when those inevitably take a poo. Fair warning from a professional mechanic who did it herself, it's a HUGE pain in the ass to drop the rear subframe on these cars, I drop subframes all the time and I'm not sure why but this one beat me up and took an entire weekend. Poly mounts didn't increase NVH at all really, and the driveline and handling are tighter for it. Also if you've got the akebono calipers, be super careful when you unbolt them from the knuckles because those steel bolts have likely been threaded into the aluminum caliper bodies for a very long time since the pads can be replaced without taking them off and the stock rotors last so long. The threads came out with the bolts on mine and it didn't take well to a tap and helicoil either. I'm dreading the one front caliper I haven't removed yet on the car.

@@liblib89 exactly. the shop I work for services all makes and models, and there's a reason we call bmw's "bring money with", and audi's "owwies". Yes there's reliable German cars, but they're the exception not the rule. And they've been getting more and more rare over the years. Tons of the older models lasted decades, but not so with most of the newer stuff. Many of them have literally dozens of computers, the electronics are a nightmare and control everything, and when one goes down it usually takes other stuff with it. They take forever to diagnose, most jobs both mechanical and electrical require more hours in labor than their equivalent in American or Japanese cars, and many of the systems require crazy calibration or programming that the OEM's only want their dealership service centers to have, so either my shop has to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a tool we'll use very rarely or we have to send the customer to the dealer to get hugely overcharged for a minor thing.

However it’s super comfy on my commute and I replaced the tires with Michelin Summer Tires which made the ride and handling so much better. All the technology including the Wireless CarPlay works really well too. I agree it’s dated but I everything works great and the engine is an absolute blast.

Infiniti is a luxury sub-brand, not performance-oriented like BMW M. The car's not really aimed at sports car audience. It does feature some performance-oriented stuff for the same reason Mercedes normally do: to pass crummy hatchbacks and for bragging rights, but not to set lap times or be a driver's car. Whereas BMW M240 is more of a performance/driver-oriented car. So it's not a fair comparison. And trunk capacity compared to BMW: that's hardly a deciding factor as people buying 2-door coupes know what they're getting into and if they needed a diaper hauler, they'd be looking at 3 series, not 2, anyway. Audi S3 is a 4-door family car and it looks like one. I don't know what kind of person 2-door coupe person would go for that instead. Probably someone with no mind of their own. Mercedes C43 is the real competitor, as well as Lexus RCF.

I have a ‘14 q50s 3.7 and they’re a used bargain to get solid performance - but they’re no longer the Japanese BMW. The handling and steering falls short, and so do the dynamics in general. But as a used daily, pretty hard to beat for the price, reliability and features. But new - why spend Audi/BMW/Mercedes money and get a worse performing vehicle? Great daily/GT as Zack mentioned but definitely not a track machine.

I love my 2018 Q50RS, but I would never pay 60k for it. You have to pick these cars up for 35-40k, and then you're really getting a bang for your buck. I don't really understand what most of these reviewers are talking about when they say " limits". I can't be out here on the road, pushing " limits" of a car I insure and have a payment on. You guys review cars and you kind of have a privileged experience with these vehicles, so your kind of out of touch. I haven't found a corner or an exit I can't take during spirited drives and twists of interstate traffic. I don't push to dangerous limitations because I don't like tickets or jail, I need to be around for my family, and I'm not trying to have an accident. Remember that the core of buyers aren't taking this thing to a track and comparing its slalom to a 340i ... that's a privilege...that's not everyday people. Sometimes, well, lets face it... ALOT of times you car reviewers need to have reminder that although you drive tons of cars and go from seat to seat, average people choose 1 car and drive it. I'm sure if I just drove a BMW 340i and then jumped in this Infinity, I'd have lots of complaints.... but the average person doesn't do that. lol

The g35 feels a little more raw, but still such a solid vehicle for being 16 years old. I have been hesitant and I don’t think I’d upgrade to a Q60. They are so much money new, for what you get. Used is definitely the better option with those cars. However I have a buddy that got a q60 redsport, constant repairs and issues with it. Being almost 43 yrs old, I remember how good Infiniti was in 90s………but just like Acura, they lost their way. This is just my opinion, the Japanese car makers don’t spread the love across their product lines. When you look at BMW, Audi and Benz, the same effort they put in the flagship models they put in the lower models…….at least when it comes to the M, S/RS and AMG lines. So Nissan gives us the GTR then cuts corners with this Q60. This car should be nothing less than a milder more affordable GTR, same thing Lexus did. Lexus gave us the magnificent LFA then cut corners with all the other F models. M cars, S/RS Audis and AMG’s have consistent build quality, performance, feel and overall driving experience across the model range. Just my 2 cents!

They only offer 400hp when they should offer 430/440hp instead and the transmission is by far it’s weakest point l, it’s slushy and blah. The car is a bit on the heavy side too weighing from 3700/3900lbs.. Hopefully Infiniti makes the next generation of these cars more powerful, more performance oriented like BMW’s and paired with premium interiors to compensate for the costs..

They tuned it that way to save clutch pacs. The 7AT just cannot tolerate abuse, so unless you get a custom ekutec tune where they can up the line pressure on the transmission, you're going to deal with variable shift behavior. There's a reason why IPT does $5000 transmission updates as many that are going insane with boost / bigger turbos eventually pay the price.

They had advertised that by 2022 they would be well on their way to having an all electric lineup. They don’t even have a single hybrid vehicle anymore much less a full electric one. I LOVED this car when it came out in '17' and even revisited it a couple of years ago. And it STILL looks beautiful. I could of lived with the 4000 pounds, but I was so insulted by the Infotainment system and the antiquated transmission that made this car so old, that I passed. I’m always rooting for the 2 door coupes!

i had a 1st gen Q45 and G35 and my relationship with Infiniti ended there. Seems to me Infiniti lost its way, (identity), after that They just did not invest enough R&D dollars to update their aging lineup and at this point with electrification, it doesn't make sense to do so. Many more options at this point, some very new and more compelling at $66K.

Hopefully the new Z which is shares a lot from this Q60, is better 😬

You don’t see them on the road because for that price you can get the 340 with the B58 engine which is a better car in every way. There is your answer

Price is too high but it is a nice driving car and the engine and platform is quite fun and well developed after all these years. So, in some ways it is solid and not a new experiment which falls short, besides some of the little dated quirks and headspace issues.

I think the real competition for this are the Japanese and Korean alternatives. Of course, if there's sentimental or nostalgic attachment, or you just love the way the q60 looks, that's fair enough. But objectively it's near the front of the pack in engine and sheet metal, and near the back of the pack in terms of steering, transmission, efficient use of space/weight, and tech. And while you can easily mod it for more power, you can do that for many of the competitors, and power is one of it's strengths. You can't mod away that transmission, steering, heavy-car handling, or tech as easily. If the only alternatives were Chargers, 300Ss, and Lincoln MKZs, it would be a compelling option. But I can't imagine buying this over a G70, IS500, or RCF if you've ever driven them back to back, or just done an objective comparison.

I have an 06 g35 6spd sedan. 300hp, rwd, LSD, manaual, decent interior. I have rays 19-inch wheels on it from the coupe and 350z suspension and a mild exhaust. All in probably around 5k and its been pretty decent to me

Something to consider in regards to the steering ratio/speed: I believe for the G37 in a coupe model, as part of the S/sport pkg it got a closer ratio / “faster” steering rack. AWD sport pkg cars (G37XS) did not receive this change AFAIK, outside of that the package changes are the same. As mentioned, the cars very much still using a lot off the G37, likely including the “longer” steering rack an AWD G37 uses. Canada never got a 2WD Q50/Q60s so I can’t say for sure which a 2WD Q car uses. Shame about how the price bloat and typical Nissan lack of development has stunted a once promising brand. I used to work for an Infiniti dealer for a bit and over the years owned a G35 sedan, and a G37XS coupe

I owned Infiniti cars 15 years. I owned 2004 G35x sedan came factory with Nismo aero kit! It was great car for 9 years no issues what so every sold it 190k miles still running strong! Then purchase 2012 G37xS unfortunately was not reliable! I wanted Q50 Red sport for longest time then end up with Kia Stinger! Genesis is everything Infiniti should be!
