Matt flies solo to Seattle, WA to try Jaguar's hot-rod rolling bit of aluminum sex on the beautiful roads surrounding Mt. Rainier. The Porsche 911 may be the gold standard of six-figure sports coupes, but can the all-new Jag hang with this crowd? Let's find out, in one take.

The F-Type is such a gorgeous car. But I have to tell you- I actually prefer the exhaust note of the V6! It's so raw!

Making a balanced video isn't always about thinking of negative things to say about the car just so you can show people how balanced you are. The F-Type is fucking awesome. It's a great product with great looks, great power, and great features at a very competitive price. I have nothing to gain by saying a car is good or a car is bad or somewhere in between. The F-Type rocks my nuts, and I want one, with a blown-ass V8.

In the last month I have been: making a 60-minute film for The Smoking Tire called "All Cars go to Heaven," filming six episodes of tuned for the upcoming season, filming and editing this review, the Corvette review, corvette burnout compilation, attending pebble beach, and I am currently in Europe filming Super Speeders 7. By the end of August I will have spent a total of 4 days at home.

That might be the best car review I've ever seen. The dude mentioned handies and screwing a 911 owner's wife while he's at the track. It's refreshing to see a video that doesn't bang on about limited slip differentials, torque vectoring, blah blah blah. Keep up the great work Matt.

Yeah, and I'm always open to trying a new big-horsepower car, and will always give them another chance. I've tested about 25 S197 Mustangs in the last few years, and it has been my experience, through driving so many different cars, that unless you're building a dedicated drag car, the S197 does not get better the more power you add. 500 HP is the limit that car can effectively get to the wheels with that chassis. If you know someone who wants to challenge my opinion, have them email me.

The handling isn't made worse when you put a V8 in it, if that's what your implying. The V8 gets a better suspension, better differential, and better traction system to make use of the power, and after driving both back to back on the track, I decided I like the V8 better, and all Jaguar's pro drivers on hand agreed with me. The people at the track who liked the V6 more tended to be the more timid, less experienced drivers.

I started this month in Seattle, at the event in this video. From there I went into the woods for a week to make a 60-minute film for TST called "all cars go to heaven." then came home for a day, drove to pebble beach, drove the C7 for 6 hours, then drove home. I was home editing for 2 days before flying to Copenhagen to start filming Super Speeders 7, where I am now. I also filmed an episode of TST today. I'm in Europe filming that shit until the 30th, then I'm home for 2 days before leaving.

all I had was two gopro's, and I edited the video myself. I have no training whatsoever in final cut, and edited the video on a transcontinental filght from a coach seat. Considering how little footage I had to work with, the basic gear I had, and the conditions I worked in, it's amazing the video came out as good as it did.

I love when I talk shit about a car and people are like, "Thank god someone is finally being honest," but then when I absolutely love the car I'm "kissing the manufacturers ass" or "being a salesman." Either I'm honest or I'm not. Just because I don't say what you want to hear doesn't mean I'm not being honest or trying to sell something. The F-Type is fucking awesome, so I spent 9 minutes saying why it's awesome. If there's a problem with that, it's your problem. not mine.

Depends what kind of driver you are. If you're a good driver that can handle a very powerful car with a short-ish wheelbase, the V8 is the only way to go, because the extra power (and everything that comes with it) is an incredible value proposition. If you're timid, inexperienced, or not a very good driver, the six is better.
@TheSmokingTire

I love when people use the word "bias" because I have a pre-existing opinion of a car (based, of course, on driving it). If I drive a 911, and I'm not that into it, that isn't bias, it just means I'm not that into it. If I were to say "All cars made by X company suck," that would be bias. But since I'm not bias, you'd never hear me say that.

If someone started their comment with "I've driven both cars," or something along those lines indicating that he had driven both, I'm happy to listen. The wording of the original comment (specifically the word "would be") indicates pretty clearly it's a speculative comment, or one based on a third party evaluation.
@TheSmokingTire
@TheSmokingTire 11 жыл бұрын
the wording of that sentence in the video was strange, I agree, and yes, you are correct, both V6's are supercharged. The perils of reviewing cars in one take.

"unusual" means no one wants to watch it. We get paid on views dude. We make films with cars that we think will get us the most views for our resources. The F-Type (along with the C7 Corvette, which you will see shortly) is the hottest car of the summer and we had every intention of covering it.

I'm interested about your experiences switching from the 911. It's been my experience that the 911 Turbo's and GT3's are phenomenal cars for the money, whereas the Carrera's and Carrera S's are way overpriced for what you get. Thoughts?

I drove the V6. It was a very nice car until I saw the price tag of my tester: $99,750. The price tag of the V8S tester right after it? $102,500. Which would you have if you're writing the check?
@TheSmokingTire

The V6S I tested was only 3 grand cheaper than the V8S. And 2 weeks after Clarkson reviewed the V6, he drove the V8, and said it was better.
@TheSmokingTire
@TheSmokingTire 11 жыл бұрын
Excellent points, both. to 1, yes, I misspoke and should have said 7-series BMW's, not S-class Mercedes. to 2, I later learned that only the V6S gets "true" launch control, which is lame.
@TheSmokingTire

the "problem" is that you blow the tires off first and second gear, not the ratios themselves. So, not a problem at all.

most people who buy 911's go with PDK not because it's advanced technology, but because it doesn't have a clutch. Track rats will care, but the average driver will think one paddle shift system is as good as another, especially when it's the proven ZF that shifts as fast as it does.
@TheSmokingTire
@TheSmokingTire 11 жыл бұрын
Upgrading to the V6S, and then the V8 gives you much more than just an increase in power. The suspension, brakes, differential, and traction setups are unique to each car. If you think you can buy a base car and do a better job sticking a few parts on it than just spending the extra money for the factory-developed upgrades they already sell, prepare to be disappointed.

Matt, thanks for another entertaining review. I currently own the XKR-S vert in British racing green and it is an amazing GT...I had a 997 911 C2S and I think your comments are spot on. Such is the case sometimes when I have to attend press events by myself. I film as much of myself as I can without a camera crew, and I hope that the videographers the company hired to provide B-roll did a good enough job to fill the gaps. In the case of, say, the Range Rover film, they did great. In this case, they definitely fell short.

Always love your work Matt. Thanks for plugging the 911 so frequently. I always enjoy hearing why I shouldn't own a 911, gotta dream, and how this or that is better. The constant reasoning never gets old. Whats the most talked about car in this review? The Jag or the 911? Still I love the British shape and engineering. When it comes down to it we are car guys and I'd drive this Jag any day of the week. You gotta roast those tires! Matt! The Smoking Tire this biotch!

Just because something can be much more powerful in the aftermarket doesn't mean it needs to be that powerful from the factory. The Jaguar V8S already requires what I'd call an "excellent" driver to get everything out of it, much more skill than I possess, and in my opinion, is already way too fast for most people. They also need to make sure the engine lasts for 150k, which is not a concern for someone bolting a whipple on a mustang.

Lol I think your reviews have been a lot better over the last few months Matt. I'm really starting to love your point of view on the car world and the fact that you express it regardless of who you piss off. You're right about the V8 being the craziest and more entertaining version, but I personally would have the V6 S I think. I drove it and it was plenty fast for me, had better balance and the motor didn't feel like it was overwhelming the chassis like in the V8. Keep up the great work! +1

"who thinks soft top when making a comparison to a 911?" - Someone who is comparing the 911 to a soft-top car would reasonably use the soft-top 911 as a comparison. Or, they could just be using the fact that in the US, the soft-top 911 outsells the coupe nearly 2-to-1. Furthermore, even though Porsche's web site shows a "base" Carrera S for $99k, I assure you no such car exists, no such car will ever be ordered. The cheapest CS coupe I've ever seen was $110k, and most are well over $120k.

without a viewfinder or backpacker screens, can't adjust exposure in real time while driving. This is why, when given the chance, I prefer a traditional press loan to going on a press launch: I like having a film crew to make sure shit looks good so I can think about driving and talking. Unfortunately, that wasn't an option for this video.

High HP mustangs prove that more isn't always better. If you want to brag about how much horsepower you have, get a shelby super snake, so I can laugh when I show up with something with half the horsepower (and half the weight, and twice the suspension) and smoke you in every performance competition you can think of. We had a RS3 recently, and used it as camera car while filming an RSTI for Tuned. The RSTI, with 300 HP, walked the Mustang every time.
