'You are Peter and on this rock i will build my Church'. For Catholics, we understand this as Jesus building His Church , on Peter, the first pontiff( bridge between heaven & earth). Here Jesus gives Peter & priesthood the power & authority to forgive sins in Jesus' name. It's beautiful to remember that all Christians come from the one Church Jesus wanted, prayed for & founded. Love & prayers from Perth,Western Australia ❤

@tersesadavila Why would Jesus build a church upon a man? When you take what he said out of context without examining the entire scripture... this is how false doctrine is made.
@Davidjune1970
@Davidjune1970 Жыл бұрын
@MrNirom1 this is the duality of the moment, in context Jesus was saying that he needed Simon to be Peter (rock) and that this rock covered in pagan statues he will build his church. And this being a pagan city full of idolatry … all the pagan idols would fall to the new church Jesus started and that maw that was seen as a gate to hell would not stand against it. That church being built on a person left behind on earth to carry out what Jesus asked them to do which he was not staying behind to do. Jesus needed his apostles to build his church when he was gone. This is covered in scripture. Matthew 16:17-19 (RSVCE): 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Jesus is talking to Peter, not saying all the apostles but to Peter. This is further reinforced in the following gospel passages where the disciples are asking Jesus who amongst them is the greatest and Jesus talks directly to Peter again in verse 32 that he is praying Peters faith will not fail and that he would support the other brethren. Luke 22:24-32 (RSVCE): 24 A dispute also arose among them, which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But not so with you; rather let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27 For which is the greater, one who sits at table, or one who serves? Is it not the one who sits at table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28 “You are those who have continued with me in my trials; 29 and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, 30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail; and when you have turned again, strengthen your brethren.” To understand the gravity of this you need to put yourself into the shoes of a Jew who follows the Judaism 2000 years ago. All they knew back in this ages was monarchy’s and the Law. Jews knew the messiah was coming, their Lord to rule the kingdom. They also knew the importance of the phrase what turning over the keys to a steward meant. That the Lord of the house was transferring authority of his home to the steward while he was away. Isaiah 22:19-24 (RSVCE): 19 I will thrust you from your office, and you will be cast down from your station. 20 In that day I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, 21 and I will clothe him with your robe, and will bind your girdle on him, and will commit your authority to his hand; and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. 22 And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David; he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open. 23 And I will fasten him like a peg in a sure place, and he will become a throne of honor to his father’s house. 24 And they will hang on him the whole weight of his father’s house, the offspring and issue, every small vessel, from the cups to all the flagons. All the apostles knew this and the meaning of those words. That Jesus the king would be in heaven preparing it for his heavenly host, and that his steward on earth would be looking after building his church on earth and that steward being Peter and all his successors. For a church to span across all nations needed a structure to oversee it. 12 apostles with one as the steward. A church that was to spread across all nations … the entire world. People today understand way more than people 2000 years ago how to build an organization that looks after matters around the world need an executive council with a CEO to ensure the entire organization is able to align and stay focused on the objective. Christ told the apostles that they would be needed to resolve things that he could not be around on earth to resolve but would send them help with the Holy Spirit. The apostles knew the job of a steward and that Peter was bestowed the keys. They didn’t need anyone to tell them that significance. Nor what the authority of the steward was until the king returned. People today wouldn’t understand that in context. But if you ask them what the job of the vice president is if the president was gone … they would know exactly what the VP is to do. They would also know what a corporation would do if the CEO had to go for a period of time. All those people know you still need a person in charge to keep steering the ship.

@@Teresadavila33 as a cradle Catholic, I believed a lot of the tradition the catholic church teaches, however when The Chosen came along, and Bishop Robert Barron and the priest who join Dallas, Rabbi Jason and the evangelical theologian sit down together, we can see that as catholics, we have missed much in understanding scripture...if you do a little research into our faith tradition, since we believe Jesus is God and He is the Word, we forgot to dive into the scripture because church fathers interpreted and reinterpreted scripture to meet their designs. I believe and thank the Lord Jesus for revealing more to us through this channel and through the Chosen's round table. How blessed are we to learn more!

And please... don't try to tell me that they all have it. There are 45,000 denominations of Christianity and if they are all receiving REVELATION from God... then there is really something wrong here. Be careful opening one’s spirit there. When I went in 2017 wirh my tour group I was overcome with emotion and saw flashes of horrors and felt such evil and sorrow that I nearly regretted the whole trio. Some friends gathered around me and prayed for me but I felt something so dark try to enter and cling to my chest that it is hard to speak of. Jesus overcame the darkness but don’t tempt things like this or walk outside the light as there is still great evil amidst sites like this.

Regarding Jesus' statement about building his church on the rock, consider that the original Greek has two words used in this passage for "rock": petra and petros. My understanding is that Peter is "petros", a relatively small boulder and "petra" is a large rock. This can be clearly seen if one refers to an Interlinear Greek-English New Testament. Surely, the rock to which Jesus refers is what Peter has just said: "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God". It is on THIS - our declaration and belief in Jesus, the Cornerstone that the builders rejected, upon which His church is built. The church consists of all who confess Jesus, the Christ (Messiah), as Saviour and Lord. No-one goes (comes) to the Father, except through Him. After all, Peter , bless him made so many mistakes, but Jesus forgave him and blessed him (like all of us!).

You forget that Jesus spoke Aramaic to his disciples and didn't say Petro or Petra but instead Cephas and in Aramaic the word rock is Cephas for both masculine and feminine. Jesus wasn't talking about the confession of faith but about who this confession came from because after saying He will build His Church He goes on to give the keys of authority to Peter and not the others. Also, Jesus is referring to Isaiah 22:22 just as it is referred that David the King gave authority to his Steward Eliakim.

@regishel I will respectfully disagree with You I have posted this in other places. Yes... Christ was speaking about Peter... but it was not about him... but what happened to him. And what happened to Peter is what Christ would build his church upon. The text of the scripture is quite clear about what happened to Peter. But it doesn't say that Jesus said: "Yes Peter... because you were told by my Father in Heaven... who is God... that I am the Christ, the Son of the Living God... that is exactly what REVELATION is. Because when God reveals to man something he does not know but God wants him to know... that man is receiving REVELATION. So no... He did not say that... but anyone who has read about Prophets or about God revealing to man what he wants that man to know... that is REVELATION. It did not need to be said. But it is true none the less. Peter did not know that Jesus was the Christ and the Son of God because someone told him. Jesus did not tell him. He is of flesh and blood. None of his fellow Apostles told him for they too are of flesh and blood. And Jesus said: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee. The people thought Jesus was a prophet. That is why they mentioned 3 prophets and thought he was one of them. And what do prophets do??? They receive REVELATION from God. So now you know what happened to Peter. He received REVELATION. And for clarification.. Peter was told that Jesus is the Christ and the Son of the Living God. Now the next thing Jesus said was. And upon this rock... I will build my church. So what is the Rock? The Rock is REVELATION. Now add in the next part that Jesus says and you can now understand why the statement that Jesus says is really really really true. AND THE GATES OF HELL SHALL NOT PREVAIL AGAINST IT. If the Church has REVELATION from God... then anything being taught would be true. There could be no false doctrine brought into the church... and so you can see where the GATES OF HELL SHALL NOT PREVAIL AGAINST IT. Yes... Peter was the man that received the REVELATION... but Christ is not going to build a church upon the man... or upon a rock, but upon what happened to Peter. REVELATION. That is the ROCK!!

@@drkarenhanson Peter means rock, your statement makes no sense. In aramaic, the language which Christ was speaking in Matthew 16, he says You (Simon) are Cephas (Rock) and upon this Cephas (Rock) I will build my Church... I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven - the importance of this is two fold, first the name Cephas/Rock/Peter corresponds to Daniel's prophecy in Daniel 2 that a rock/stone would be thrown into the fourth kingdom (Rome) and from this rock/stone God will build his eternal kingdom - secondly, the keys of the kingdom imply that Christ is making Peter the priestly overseer of Christ's Church since it is an allusion to Isaiah 22 in which Eliakhim is made the priestly overseer of the Temple and held a primacy among the officers of the Davidic Kingdom - therefore, Peter holds the primacy among the Apostles and is the source of unity.

Well, I respectfully disagree. Christ was very clearly talking about Peter; he is the rock to which Christ is referring. There are three successive sentences, all of which flow from Peter's confession of Jesus' identity. The first is a blessing ("blessed are you Simon bar Jonah ..."); it's building Peter up. The third sentence ("I will give you the keys ...") is also a blessing, further building Peter up. Well, the 2nd must also be read as a blessing on Peter ("You are Peter [i.e., Rock] and on this rock I will build my church ...'); again, it is intended to elevate Peter. There's essentially no other consistent way to read this portion of the text. Peter must be the rock.
@TheSnipeLife

If that were the case, then Jesus could have told that to Peter anywhere otlr any other day. The fact that he said I'm front of a giant pagan rock known as the Gates of Hell holds significance. You are ignoring the setting for which these words took place.
@MrNirom1
@MrNirom1 Жыл бұрын
@@perfectpeace00 You are inferring something that was never stated. Jesus had a habit of using the world as his chalk board to teach. Women at the well... Living water. And what a better time that to change the name of Peter to rock or stone when they were on the biggest Rock in Israel!! Mt Hermon. And of course he used the Gates of Hell analogy because it tied in with what revelation would do for the church if the church had revelation. And because Peter revealed the true nature of who Jesus was and that revelation came directly from his Father... can't you see the connection? They all tie in together! And how could it be otherwise? There is no other foundation upon which the Lord could build his Church and kingdom. The things of God are known only by the power of his Spirit. God stands revealed or he remains forever unknown. No man can know that Jesus is the Lord but by the Holy Ghost. Revelation: Pure, perfect, personal revelation-this is the rock! Revelation that Jesus is the Christ: the plain, wondrous word that comes from God in heaven to man on earth, the word that affirms the divine Sonship of our Lord-this is the rock! The divine sonship of our Lord: the sure, heaven-sent word that God is his Father and that he has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel-this is the rock! The testimony of our Lord: the testimony of Jesus, which is the spirit of prophecy-this is the rock! All this is the rock, and yet there is more. Christ is the Rock: the Rock of Ages, the Stone of Israel, the Sure Foundation-the Lord is our Rock!
@kdmdlo
@kdmdlo Жыл бұрын
@@MrNirom1 Thanks for your perspective. I have heard this suggestion (that the revelation is the rock and not Peter). Two things. First, I don't think this is a valid interpretation because it doesn't fit the sequence of Christ's three statements. Each statement is a blessing, followed by a fuller explanation of what that blessing is. Moreover, you're suggesting that the antecedent for the pronoun "this" (in "this rock") is in the prior sentence ... despite the fact that the noun "revelation" doesn't appear (to be the correct antecedent) - just the verb "revealed". Isn't it grammatically much more likely to be Peter, whose name - a proper noun - is in the same sentence? Second, I will point to the "Theological Dictionary of the New Testament" (a well respected source among protestants and evangelicals), assembled by Gerhard Kittle in the early 20th century. Dr. Oscar Cullman, a contributing editor for the Dictionary, writes: "The obvious pun which has made its way into the Greek text ... suggests a material identity between Petra and Petros ... as it is impossible to differentiate strictly between the two words ... Petros himself is this Petra, not just his faith or his confession ... the idea of the Reformers that he is referring to the faith of Peter is quite inconceivable ... for there is no reference here to the faith of Peter. Rather the parallelism of "though art Rock" and "on this rock I will build" shows that the second rock can only be the same as the first. It is thus evident that Jesus is referring to Peter, to whom he has given the name Rock." Both for my reasoning and that put forward by Dr. Cullman ... plus the 1500 years of consistent teaching (prior to the reformation) ... pretty strongly suggests that Christ was not referring to Peter's confession but to him (Peter) personally.. Pax Christi!

May I give you a different perspective of this scripture?? For me when I read it... I look typically at three things. 1. Who do the people say Jesus is? 2. Who do the Apostle say Jesus is? 3. Who is right and why? 1a. So... it really does not matter who the people say Jesus is. It is interesting that some think he is John the Baptist. At this point in time.. John the Baptist is dead.. no? I mean his death was two chapters ago (Matt 14). I just wonder why some think that Jesus is John the Baptist? Oh well. Elijah and Jeremiah were great prophets... but why them? Who knows. It really is not important. 2a, Now... this is where I do not understand how Christians seem to miss the whole point here. And there are some hints about who some of the people think Jesus is. John the Baptist is claimed to be a prophet. Elijah and Jeremiah are prophets. And what is the one thing that happens with all prophets? Yes.. you are right. They receive REVELATION from God. 3a. Here Peter answers and says... Thou are the Christ, the Son of the Living God. Now ask yourself. When has this ever been brought up so far to date that Jesus is the Christ and the Son of the Living God?? Never. Now I know the Chosen gave this away when Simon and Andrew were on the boat of a million fish... but it is not until they are here that they know this. Why you ask? Because Jesus says so... right? 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, - Lets look at this. Flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee. Is Jesus made of flesh and blood?? Yes he is. So he did not tell Simon. Non of the other humans there... including his brother did not tell him that for they are of flesh and blood. So who told him??? but my Father which is in heaven. - Wait Wait Wait. What??? God told him??? The Father told him?? What is it called when God reveals something to man??? REVELATION. Simon Peter received REVELATION from God. That is the way he found out and Jesus even tells him and everyone that is how he found out. Do you agree with me here?? So... now we all know that Peter received REVELATION from God and what is the next thing that Jesus Says????? 1. 18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, - this is where Jesus changes the name of Simon to Peter... which means stone or rock. Now... as you know.. they are on Mt Hermon. The biggest Rock in all of Israel. And mountains are where prophets often go to to receive Revelation. And REVELATION FLOWS DOWN FROM HEAVEN LIKE RAIN FLOWS DOWN THIS MOUNTAIN TO FEED THE MOUTH OF THE JORDAN RIVER WITH WATER WHICH FEEDS THE DEAD SEA. So now Peter has received Revelation from heaven that flowed down to him. And the very next thing Jesus says is what? and upon this rock I will build my church. So what possibly could the Rock be?? REVELATION. Now think about this. If the Church is receiving REVELATION from God on everything concerning the Church... can you see how what Christ says next is true??? and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Of course!!! If the church is receiving REVELATION FROM GOD.. then how could the gates of hell prevail against it?? As Christ said.... THE GATES OF HELL SHALL NOT PREVAIL AGAINST IT. Does this make sense to you? Peter received REVELATION and Jesus will build his church up this rock... and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. That my Christian friends is what this Scripture means. Ask God yourself.

@@michaela.754 Revelation given to Simon ON the Rock. Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter... which means Rock. Revelation is the rock. Jesus would build his church upon the church receiving revelation. And as long as the church was receiving the Revelation... the gates of Hell could not prevail against it. But if there was no Revelation... then the church is susceptible to Hell prevailing.

He was also Jewish though, so most likely there were places he didn’t go including women’s mikvehs etc.

You have absolutely no ideas why Jesus had the disciples walk all the to Banias. It has only partially to do with the Gates of Hell. It has to do with Peter's pronouncement that Jesus was the Son of god and Jesus in return making him the first CEO/Pope of the Catholic Church, Jesus's Church when he said those words, "Thou are Cephas and upon this Cephas I will built my Church and the gates of hell hell will not prevail against it. I will give you the Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." Why here at the base of Mt. Hermon. It was a worldwide pilgrimage site for the pagans who believed in their god Pan. Pan is the god of SHEEP and SHEPHERDS. Jesus was making point that he was making Cephas the TRUE SHEPHERD of His SHEEP. The keys of the earthly kingdom as in Isaiah 22:20-26 was passed on on the death of the previous Chief Steward. I tall ties in with Peter's new name given by Jesus Himself in John 1:42
