I think Pilate’s quote of ‘what is truth?’ gives us an idea of how conflicted he was. Trying to please the powers in Rome and keep peace within the Jewish community. Every faction had opposing stories and interests. It’ll be a great opportunity for all the actors.

What is Truth is a philosophical question that gives us hints the show might have the young Pilate right! This question was asked by ancient young philosophy students to their teachers and shows Pilate was highly educated not just a brute soldier. He was appointed procurator which was more of a civilian administrator!

The animosity between Pilate and herod recorded by the apostle John might had to do with age. Herod Antipas was at least 10 years older than Pontius Pilate! Antipas was 15 when Jesus was born and Pilate was born about that time. Also chaifas was son in law of Hanas make him about the age of Antipas

Granted, the role is often given to older actors but maybe an inspired choice? Perhaps a more mature Pilate would not have been so eager to impress authority or so easily influenced by the crowd. I'm curious to see how this interpretation plays out.

The traditional portrayal of Pilate is of a man in his 50s but the Bible gives us hints he was about the same age of Jesus! According to tradition, Claudia (wife of Pilate) was the granddaughter of Augustus Caesar. Her mother Julia (wife of Tiberius) was promiscuous so exiled from court, but after Julia's death Claudia was adopted by Tiberius - who wasn't her natural father. Tradition is conflicting. There is no sense in having a member of the court given in marriage to a soldier. The tradition that Claudia was a widow and older than Pontius has more sense! But the young Claudia has much more sense and logic. They were married just a couple of years before they he trial of Jesus and seems they still don't have children! Big clue people! Claudia and Pilate didn't have children. They were still relatively newly married or Claudia was barren? Hence her superstitions and dreams?

Actually. I can see a younger Pilate working out well. I've always had trouble with the idea that a tough and ruthless military veteran would have had trouble with the issue of whether or not to condemn a man to death. He has the authority of Rome behind him. A slightly younger man, with uncertainty behind his actions, makes a lot of sense. I can really imagine him being very much phased by a baying crowd, who could so easily be whipped up into a riot, and giving into them, because he doesn't want trouble to deal with.

The Pilate Stone is indeed a magnificent find! However, there WAS historical evidence of the reality of Pilate's existence in Josephus: According to Josephus in his The Jewish War (2.9. 2) and Antiquities of the Jews (18.3. 1), "Pilate offended the Jews by moving imperial standards with the image of Caesar into Jerusalem. This resulted in a crowd of Jews surrounding Pilate's house in Caesarea for five days."

@@FilippoPietrabissa I'm not historian, I'm a Christian. Pontius Pilate is not a historical figure like , for example, Napoleon Bonaparte. Pontius Pilate is a Biblical character and most of what we know about him is based on Scripture and TRADITION. But now, about the terms of Roman provincial governors it is stated that they were appointed for several years(not 11 like Pontius allegedly served). For example, Pilate's predecessor Vallerius Gratus served for about 11 years before he was replaced by Pilate. You can't quote historical events that might not 100% accurate. But , these are approximations but still you can tell that besides Valerius who was already OLD and about to retire, Pontious was the second longest serving governor of Judea. If you see the list of Judea administrators most of them served for less than 4 years or one term. These governors were appointed at the time they were about to retire(50 to 60 years old), they made it to an age most soldiers were already dead. So this perfectly fits into the notion that Pontius Pilate was young when he was appointed. I don't have to put links on here, you can search for yourself! If you are a real historian.

The Gospels were written years after Pilate died. The earlier Gospel was Marc written in about 41AD. Pilate died about 40AD(some say suicide or horse accident). But all the Gospels infer Pilate was not a bad man or blood thirsty maniac . He was just a weak man who even might have converted to Christianity along with his wife. So we have 4 Gospels and several apocrypha vs Josephus.

Traditionally, Pilate's wife is known as Claudia Procula. She's even a saint in the Greek Orthodox, Coptic and Ethiopian churches. They say she became a Christian and was martyred. In the Roman naming tradition, daughters were named with the feminine version of the family's dynastic title. And if there was more than one daughter, they'd have a second name, so as to be told apart. Pilate has married one of the daughters from a family of the Claudian dynasty. How this fits into the historical Pilate, I don't know.

Likewise, the way Pilate talks to Jesus is like of someone talking to another man about his own age. Please, see the difference between Herod Antipas talking to Jesus you can tell Herod is at least 10-15 years older than Jesus! Nicodemus was in his late 60s when he talked to Jesus at night! Check how they talk! These are some clues we can collect to infer how old these characters are!!!

@@perfectpeace00 some people argue that being a king or Caesar is different from being a "Prefect". Many think a "Prefect" was related only to the military and had been in the military for decades which is ludicrous. A "prefect" was a title and was not necessary a military title like a Centurion, General or Captain. Traditionally, people think Pilate was in his 40s or 50s but there is no evidence of this. There is more evidence Pilate was in his 30s at the trial of Jesus. If we see the history of people appointed as provincial administrators their age was in their 30s average at the time to be appointed. Some famous Roman provincial governors were in their 30s at the top of their rules. One of the most famous Roman administrators some tradition name him Marcus Tulius who was a first "prefect" then pro consul who ordered St Polycarp's execution. This administrator was in his late 30s at the time. This was about 155 AD.

Pilate had soldiers sneak in standards of Caesar into Jerusalem to be in the Fortress of Antonia the Jews saw the standards and went to Caesarea and confronted Pilate to remove the standards and bring them back to Caesarea Pilate bluffed about killing them and they called his bluff and he relented and had the standards brought back to Caesarea. Another time Pilate built an Aqueduct for Jerusalem using the Corban from the Temple. The Jews found out about it and revolted. Pilate ordered his soldiers to mingle with the crowd dressed up as Jews. At a command from Pilate, the disguised Romans brought out concealed clubs and beat 3000 Jews. Some of them died.

Being a soldier was not Pilates job. Remember that under Romes occupation, the local authority to Govern daily affairs and religious crimes remained with the local authorities, while still reflecting the overall authority of Rome. Local authorities could not kill an offender and had to pass the case back to Rome’s authority - Pilate to do so. A prefect’s job was to “Balance” the Roles of Jewish law and Roman Law, and it was a very difficult job to do. Like trying to keep all in balance on the Head of a pin. Fly Roman flags over a city or temple and you may cause the Jews to riot, which would require a response that may draw criticism from Rome. Remember, Rome was an empire-building machine with only so many well-trained and outfitted Roman Soldiers. Leaving as much local control meant that more soldiers could be used to control more lands defeated and rolled into the Empire earning more money for Rome to fund bigger armies of Roman soldiers to expand the Empire. Quiet tax collecting was always the goal. Everything else was a waste of resources to be avoided. This is why the judgment of Jesus was such a thorn for Pilate. He did not see charges that would warrant his getting involved and possibly setting off riots and discourse which he would pay for politically with Rome. He tried to place it back in Herod’s hands so that he Pilate, could not be directly blamed for the outcome of the sentence of death. Hence the political drama of the washing of the hands, done to try to protect his position in Rome after this all fell out. Think more Politics, less despot.

I first thought Pilate's wife was a boy. Pilate also has a gay vibe IMHO.

This is a big hint! Pontius Pilate was a rumored favorite of Tiberius! The marriage of Pontius Pilate with Claudia procula was staged!!!! The show might just got everything right here!!!!

The Pilate stone gives us a hint Pontius Pilate was a very very good friend of old Tiberius 😊

No disrespect to the actors who portray Pilate and Claudia, but of course they are too young, simply on the basis of how long Pilate was Governor before even encountering Jesus. It’s one more example of how the Chosen is becoming more of a soap opera than the Gospel with all the overdone “backstory.” No, Jenkins is not giving us the most authentic Jesus story ever.

Terrible casting. Pilate was a nasty guy who hated his assignment

I'm sorry but this seems a bit awkward. He would have been old enough to command people and deal with unrest. Pilate ruled for ten years. He would have probably been the son of a influential Roman family. His British accent if he was from Britain would have been minimal.

No. Military officers could become commanders in their 20s. But Pontius Pilate was not a military commander he was a prefect sort of administrator judge mayor.

Traditional depictions of Pontius Pilate dressed in armor at the trial of Jesus is not accurate. Provincial governors didn't wear armor to seat on the judgment seat and pronounce or declare sentence! Pilate most likely was dressed in toga. He was not going to war early Friday morning! People, even "historians" lack of common sense.

Yes it was a mistake, BUT? I don't care I'm watching anyway. The young man plays the part well? Then stick to the main focus. Jesus Christ

Why am I thinking other Pilate actors were portrayed as young and a bit effeminate? Jesus Christ Superstar?

It doesn't even bother me that he is "young" it bothers me that he is so effeminate and prissy. I'm sorry but Roman's were warriors. The strange valley girl accent and the weird flirattiousness with Atticus is off putting. so cringe. This guy is just not good for Pontius of all people. Mel Gibsons was by far the best. A man's man and conflicted yet honestly trying to make the best move possible and honestly influenced by his wife and her premonition that Jesus was someone more than human ans innocent.
