Only just seen this video but fair play you’ve clearly done your research! As pointed out our rivalry with Birmingham City is greater than our rivalry with stoke. The stoke rivalry only stems from us being not too far from Staffordshire. But Great video very insightful 👍🏻

Really good talk. Just to point out Wolves won their first 'major' trophy in 1893 the Fa cup against Everton. As a kid growing up in the sixties matches against Stoke was a big rivalry. A Staffordshire derby as they called it at the time. Don't forget West Bromwich was also part of Staffordshire in those days as was Wolves before the boundary changes in 1974. While games against our Black country neighbours WBA are our traditionally biggest rivals theer has always been a big rivalry with Aston Villa. They are known locally as the big eds from Brum. Even in the seveeties they were big games and after Man Utd and Liverpool ,Villa always took the most away fans to Molineux not the baggies or the blue noses.

Great Channel although I do have a major bias as a Wolves fan myself! I can tell you my Father first started watching Wolves in the final playing season of Stan Cullis' career 1946-47 and has followed them ever since, although not much lately due to not being too good on his feet in his 88th year. I believe you didn't have too much info on the Wolves rivalry with Stoke City? This rivalry was geographically based on both teams being the biggest cities and manufacturing areas in the county of Staffordshire (Wolverhampton is now in the West Midlands but until 1974 was in Staffordshire) and they were statistically the two top football teams in this area, although it should be noted that Staffordshire does not have an abundance of top tier football teams. With regards to Aston Villa as rivals, this was again due to locality but also in the 50s games in the english top-flight were played on a Christmas Day and Boxing Day (the day after Christmas) - Wolves would play Aston Villa on Christmas Day and again on Boxing day with them being at home then away the next day, this practise of playing on Christmas Day finished in around 1959.

Very interesting report, there was a rivalry with Stoke (The Clayheads) because Wolverhampton and Stoke were both Staffordshire clubs. Boundaries changed and Wolves became a West Midland side. Nowadays the rivalry with the Vile is because for a while there were no midland opponents, BUT!! with the Tesco lot back in the prem for 3 seasons - Autumn, Winter and Spring old rivalries have been restored.

@@TheSoccerTavern No problem. Your depth of research was amazing and you were spot on with most everything. One minor detail is that Stan Cullis had the apprentices (including a young Ron Atkinson who later went on to manage Manchester United and Villa amongst others) water the pitch before the game as well as at half time as he wanted to nullify Honved's slick passing game. As I said, great video and I have subscribed. Keep up the good work!

Two corrections I would like to make: 1. Stan Cullis had the Molineux pitch watered in the days leading up to the game against Honved, NOT at half-time during the match itself. That would not have been allowed. 2. It's football, not "saccer"...

I don't know to be fair. All I know is that ever since I've been going to Molineux (about 17 years), we've been in the same division as Blues, as we call them, many times. Due to the close proximity and also the number of times we've played them in recent times, I'd put them 2nd behind Albion as rivals. As the song goes.. "shiiiiiiiiiiit on the brummies, shit on the brummies tonight ooh ahh ahh!" etc

A good summary in the time allowed and you can be excused for missing a few things out as you would have needed an hour or two to cover all the achievements of Wolves. Aston Villa vs Wolves is the oldest league football derby in the World as the two teams met on the very first day of the very first league season in 1888. Preston North End won that first league with Villa second and Wolves third. Preston also beat Wolves in the final of that season's FA cup to become the first ever team to do the league and cup double.
