Considering that Aggressive Expansion is meant to simulate the response of nations to the expansion of strategic opponents...its probably accurate. Like even if the Ottomans have tons of territory and you aren't impacting them much, the larger concern is that a rival now has new ports/income/manpower/strategic positioning. So nations getting upset even if the gain is small seems pretty par the course for the era.
@viniciusyugulis72782 жыл бұрын
I don't think it works that way In my Naples to Italy campaign I kept absolutely destroying France and Spain after ating all of Italy bf the 1550, my AE with Europe was atrocious but I didn't care because I had very strong allies, but the Muslim nations didn't really care that I did this
@artofthepossible73292 жыл бұрын
@Vinícius Yugulis That's because they are Muslim and you are conquering Catholics, not exactly a cause for concern. This is why any given strategy for Ottomans, Russia and Indian domination is to toggle between the various religions in the area so that AE decays while you war and conquer.

As for medieval government ressources, you are right that England had the best taxation administration in christian western Europe in the XIth to XIVth centuries, but you miss some subtelties : -Byzantium had also a very efficient taxation system, and it had more than 6 times the population of the english kingdom -The same can be said for the successive states that united Andalusia (the Umayyad caliphate, the Almoravid imamate and Almohad caliphate), those were the strongest states in Europe back then, but they had to contend with the catholic states united by their clergy and common aristocratic culture. -Normandy was more populated than England back then, and richer (the wool trade wasn't that profitable before the XIVth century), it was in the duchy of Normandy that the exchequer was invented, and untill the angevin inheritance, Normandy provided the majority of the monarchies taxes, its only after the loss of Normandy in 1204 and most of Aquitaine that England became the fiscal and political center of the monarchy. After its conquest by the french, Normandy kept its tax system and became the most profitable french province. -England was on the whole very lightly populated (around 1 million inhabitants), isolated from the big trade routes, centered on the muslim world and thus flowing to the Mediterrannean, most of its wealth came from the wool trade. Thus its tax revenues weren't that great quantitatively, but they allowed the kingdom to punch way above their weight on paper -Their better tax system became especially relevant in the XIVth century, since despite having lost their rich french possessions the english kings could muster a military strength that rivaled that of the french king who controlled a kingdom with around 10 to 20 times England's population (France had around 20 million inhabitants around 1300). That can be explained by the growth of the north European trade in which English wool was the most sought after for the drapperies woven in Flanders, creating strong economic growth, trade revenues which were of course very efficiently taxed (so England had actually good natural ressources, having oil in Medieval northern Europe wouldn't be worth anything, wool on the other hand...) -This situation would have a lasting legacy in english politics, with the birth of a wealthy urban merchant class, residing mostly in London, which often opposed the monarchy's high taxation, it would also lead to the urbanization of the country with the growth of London and coastal ports, which very easier to tax than the countryside that belonged to a often complicated patchwork of familial farms owned by freemen, huge properties owned by landlords and feudal estates. -Thus a XIth century englishman was actually quite poor compared to the average european, and the english state back then was rich mostly because of its french possessions, untill it lost them in the early XIIIth century. Yet in the XIVth century England became richer because of trade, allowing the english state to become powerfull again, this time thanks to England itself. -It is interesting to compare the english system to that of the HRE which failed to create a coherent administration and tax system in the first half of the XIIIth century, which made the emperor quite weak (the HRE was with France the most populated and rich catholic country, by far), and also to that of the french kingdom, which actually also used what was done in Normandy for its reforms in the early XIIIth century when it became a centralized kingdom, it thus became even more powerfull but was hindered from having a tax system as efficient as England because of the local power of great nobles who would only be subdued in the late XVth century (William the conqueror had managed to avoid that in England by controlling the redistribution of lands to norman nobles and scattering them through the country). -Another catholic kingdom with an especially potent tax system was Sicily, who benefitted from the advances made by both the byzantine and muslim tax systems. It actually became one of the most important sources of revenue for the Habsburg monarchy when they inherited it, even in the XVIth and XVIIth centuries. The spanish monarchies frequent fiscal issues in the XVIIth century because of the wars against France, the dutch or the protestant league led them to sell much of the crowns land there to landowners and give them great autonomy, leading Naples and especially Sicily to be completely taken over by landowners untill the XIXth century, this is the cause of many issues it still faces today like the lack of state authority and the influence of the mafia.

To anyone looking to play England in the future, I personally can strongly recommend going influence first, and then admin. Admin is always good, it gives CCR and govcap which is sorely needed (Laith was over GC during the latter half of this video, giving penalties to admin efficiency), but the adm-inf policy gives a nice 20% reduction in diplo annex cost, which combines with catholics' 10%, GB's 15%, influence's 25% and the 5% from the nobility to give a nice 75% diplomatic annexation cost reduction (there is also a parliament issue which can grant another 15%, putting you at the cap of 90%). The third policy is up in the air, but I heartily recommend taking diplomatic to take more land faster and reduce coalitions. Diplomatic also enables the pu game because you can break RM's no worry, and the PU game is further enhanced by your 75% resting diplo annex cost reduction. With this playstyle, you'd probably be better off turing Brittany into a vassal. Also recommended is taking at least 1 province in sicily to release sicily during the first war against the Iberians, and vassalising Brittany (You play very well with vassals because you have influence AND diplomatic ideas). Make as much vassals as you can, you could even feed all of ireland to a vassal so you don't have to core it. Also, don't manually annex scotland. You get them for free when you form GB (Like Castille gets Aragon for free when forming spain (or the other way around if Aragon is a player), or like Savoy and Sardinia can get each other for free when forming Sardinia-Piedmont).

Hey Laith a strategy for a neighbor of Burgundy is when Burgundy falls in PU and then loses all its HRE holdings to attack and vassalize it as it doesn't lose its core and as it is your vassal you can very easily tell it to transfer trade power in the English Channel and get very little aggressive expansion for all that valuable land

43:27 Huh, that's an interesting idea. I feel AE is a bit weird with how it works in that like, and I feel like beating a country that is bigger / comparable in size to you should have some impact on AE. It could well be a more fun gameplay mechanic, and I mean warscore cost does scale with country size so you can conquer a big country easier, but the AE doesn't. I feel it could be interesting in that it would legitimately encourage you to allow a nation to grow big if you wanted to get less AE from it. (And it would make sense that as you dismantle an empire war after war local powers would become more wary about you destroying it and removing local predictability and balance) Which can make for more fun wars and a more challenging game. Like with warscore each province is marginally cheaper for big nations, but it's much harder to get Warscore and it's much harder to get them to accept to give up land so it kinda balances. I'd love to see a mod that tried to implement it, see how it feels, but no clue how it'd have to work lmao. (Unless it was just like, a triggered modifier for enemy being over x amount of dev, ig)

I think lowered AE against larger nations would be bad. Sounds good in theory but it would really just punish you for getting bigger.
