Anyone else think that Maureen Moore picked up a lot of the cues for Charlotte from Diana Rigg? Their performances are pretty simlar...
This clip includes "Every Day a Little Death".
The Cast is as follows:
Desiree Armfeldt- Sally Anne Howes
Madame Armfeldt- Regina Resnik
Fredrika Armfeldt- Danielle Ferland
Frederik Egerman- George Lee Andrews
Henrik Egerman- Kevin Anderson
Anne Egerman- Beverly Lambert
Petra- Susan Terry
Countess Charlotte Malcolm- Maureen Moore
Count Carl-Magnus Malcom- Michael Maguire
With Ron Baker, Michael Rees Davis, Susanne Marsee, Lisa Saffer, and Barbara Shirvis playing the quintet.

It's interesting that in the script, this scene has Charlotte literally sobbing in bits and pieces, while in this interpretation, she never loses her composure. That's such a good decision, since this stiff, subdued version of Charlotte seems more jaded, almost numb at times. It works so well with her dry lines. And the performance is so, so fantastic. The way Moore delivers the escalation of the "wars/horses/whores" line into "I think love's a dirty busiNESS" is just the very best version of one of my favorite Sondheim lyrics.

Heart-rending. Every woman knows of the humiliations she sings of. Humiliation and desire and hatred and grief. Sondheim, a gay man who's rumored to have loathed his mother, can paint the richest, most sympathetic female characters with a few deft strokes of music and lyric. My heart hurts for these women! And it's all Stephen Sondheim's fault.

Not rumoured to, he unabashedly does! And from hearing anecdotally how she treated him as a child it’s quite understandable

As the years pass and we see Sondheim's musicals over and over again, we will listen more intently to his extraordinary lyrics and melodies and realize even more what a genius Sondheim wa.

I'd think the splendid Maureen Moore picked up an idea or two from the original Charlotte in Ingmar Bergman's "Smiles of a Summer Night", one Margit Carlqvist.

Lyrics: Charlotte: Every day a little death, In the parlour, in the bed, In the curtains, in the silver, In the buttons, in the bread. Everyday a little sting, In the heart and in the head. Every move and every breath, And you hardly feel a thing, Brings a perfect little death. He smiles sweetly, strokes my hair, Says he misses me. I would murder him right there, But first I die. He talks softly of his wars, And his horses, and his whores, I think love's a dirty business. Anne: So do I! So do I. Charlotte: I'm before him on my knees, And he kisses me. He assumes I'll lose my reason, And I do. Men are stupid, men are vain, Love's disgusting, love's insane, A humiliating business. Anne: Oh, how true. Charlotte: Ah, well. Everyday a little death. Anne: Everyday a little death. Charlotte: In the parlour, in the bed. Anne: In the looks and in the acts. Charlotte: In the curtains, in the silver, In the buttons, in the bread. Anne: In the murmurs, in the gestures, In the pauses, in the sighs. Charlotte: Everyday a little sting. Anne: Everyday a little dies. Charlotte: In the heart and in the head. Anne: In the looks and in the lies. Charlotte: Every move and every breath, Both: And you hardly feel a thing, Brings a perfect little death.
