Dry fall. Unseasonably warm. Last year in December we had 5 consecutive nights of minus -40F. This year it’s barely even hit freezing. You’ve has amazing 1st year outcomes… and in a drought! 👏👏⭐️

Wow Matthew! Even in the fall, your garden is looking amazing for it being a new garden! Can’t wait to see it all filled out in the spring! Nice job! Deanna

Here in central Ohio we have not had a frost yet! My petunias, zinnias, etc. are still blooming. The coleus and basil are still going strong. Super weird but it’s nice to have flowers blooming in mid-November! Finally got some rain today; it’s been such an incredibly dry year. This has been my year of Japanese maples; have planted tons of them! Some still have half of their leaves. I planted some Black and Bloom salvia plants this year which were super underwhelming for a while. But they have recently bulked up, flowered big time, and the pollinators are loving them. We are zone 6b and they are not hardy here, but I am placing big bricks around them to retain heat… after it freezes and the plants die back naturally I will trim them to the ground, put a ton of chopped leaves over them and cover them with clear plastic fastened to the ground, and hope at least some will come back next year. Gardening adventures are fun!

So crazy you haven’t had a frost yet! Here in the country we’re a bit more exposed so I’ve had a lot of them by now.

Hi Matthew! Congrats on getting your irrigation finished. I know you've been wanting to get that done. I'm so amazed at how much you've accomplished since you moved in. Everything is looking so good. The rose on the trellis by the house is so pretty. I'm looking forward to seeing the trellis you will add in the back. Thank you so much for sharing!

I’m waiting till spring for cleanup too, Matthew. Been busy, however, putting down a lot of shredded leaf mulch. Hope to get more beds done this week.

I live in the Phila, PA suburbs, north of the city, and we've not actually had a frost this year. It's been 32 a few times, but no frost to kill the beautiful blooming their heads off annual flowers. It's been 78 - 80 several times for a few days here and there and today was 68 still warm. I don't remember ever having a fall this warm before. I'm loving it. Your garden looks greater since you've planted all those trees and shrubs.

I really enjoyed this wonderful long fall so far and having fresh air blowing throughout the house. It's so mild at night even......love it. I'm close to your area and I still have my 3 outdoor pots blooming as well. I feel the entire US has changed with the weather. This has been one of my favorite fall weathers since I've lived here in 1991. I don't like cold weather....ugh!

Hello from south central PA. We have had a few frosts in our local area but not in my neighborhood with highs ranging 65 to 82. I have harvested peppers and a few tomatoes still this week and borage flowers for drying from a second planting.Finally getting rain today after about 45 days of none, woot woot!

Can you please show how you ran your irrigation system from start to finish? How far down do you put PVC pipe? Where is water connected, is it from bib through pipe then connected to irrigation? I’d love to understand so I can run irrigation here in zone 9b where it’s hot and we need water most of the time…
@SouthernersGardenАй бұрын
I’ve shot several videos on drip irrigation installation from start to finish from a hose bibb. You can find them on my channel. PVC isn’t needed in those cases. I did not video this process as it took collectively weeks of me doing it myself from Spring until now as I’m using true sprinkler valves to get the zones everywhere I needed on the property and also requires electrical wiring.

Hi Matthew, our fall in northern Illinois has been similar to yours! We had our first frost on Oct 16, also had a second frost the next day but has been relatively mild since. It’s allowed me to delay my cleanup to this weekend! Also planting a couple potted Norway spruce trees into the ground and getting the last of my bulbs planted.

Here in east central Tennessee on the plateau it’s been like a desert. We had a light frost in the middle of October that made a few things crispy. All the leaves have fallen now even tho it’s in the middle 70s or warmer. The roses are growing new leaves and blooming again. 😢 I hope we don’t have a cold snap that kills them. I’ve never experienced weather like this in my 72 years. Even the farm ponds in the area are completely dry.

In Greenville, SC Zone 8, my cherry tree is both blooming and dropping and its leaves for fall. The tree doesn’t understand the weather and I don’t either. Meanwhile ‘Woolerton Old Hall’ has over a dozen new blooms. Great David Austin rose! Think you’d like it. Your tree additions make me envy your space.

❤Rain is finally here after 43 days and of course it comes when we’re chopping firewood, but thankfully after we trimmed roses yesterday. Yes, leave the leaves. I mowed over the lawn after 3 weeks without the tractor working and the tulip tree mocked me dropping leaves after I finished. 😂

Love your property and how the gardens are developing. Do you use anything as a border to separate edge of the beds and lawn?

No, just a natural edge.

It looks amazing! ❤ And, yes, it's been a very weird fall. I'm wishing I hadn't pulled my tomatos at the end of Sept. They weren't diseased, and I would probably still be getting tomatos. On another note, maybe my artichoke will over winter this year (but I won't count on it, lol)

We finally got a frost on the Colorado Front Range around Nov 3, and a week later we had a massive four day snow event - 16ish inches of slushy wet snow like we’d get in Spring over 4 days. The trees hadn’t even finished turning or dropping leaves so there was tree damage.
@SouthernersGardenАй бұрын
Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that. We’ve had things like that happen before here too.

"Flock finger lakes" has just put a vlog on tulips, which is fascinating. She talks about the history of tulips and has purchased heirloom varieties which you might like. Also "the impatient garden has added some bulbs over her water and waste holders under the ground. One of them is a small yellow flowering plant, that has been very successful and that is early spring interest. She is naturalizing this particular area with a small variety but volumnous amount of spring interest , and it's working well. I would check her vlog on bulbs before buying any.😊 Jo.

It’s often best to trim them up and defoliate them if you’ve had disease issues.
