I’m also slowing down. In my case it’s because of age and arthritis. I have found joy in Japanese maples, especially coral barks, and blue dwarf conifers. As an accountant, I consider most annuals too expensive since they last only a single season and have to be repurchased or started from seeds every year. Your garden was gorgeous last year so I’m looking forward to seeing it this coming year. Take care of yourself.

Northern is what attracked me, you get cold and snow, like us in northeast. I never would have checked out southern. But I already know you so I'm watching.

I’m curious what will survive our longer constant freeze this year in east TN. I will still be flower gardening with more focus on vegetables to change my diet to more veg based. The older I get the more I crave vegetables. Glad to find your channel! PS I trim Silver Falls to keep it neat above the ground always grows right back.

Try euphorbia diamond mountain with agressive plants. Bewitched potato vine is a bit more compact. It’s from proven winners but not as easy to find. If you occasionally trim the potato vine throughout the season is key. For a red perennial grass get andropogon Red October. It’s not as dark and more red than purple but it’s beautiful and perennial

Hello, the Northern part of your channel, The Southerner's "Northern" Garden, is what got my attention to watch your videos. I live in eastern Iowa. Just thought you might want to know. Just my opinion.

In Mississippi I don’t have to worry about a sweet potato vine being too aggressive. The deer eat them up when I plant them. I wish they’d leave my plants alone. Your gardens are coming along beautifully!💚

We’re somewhat close! I’m a gardening fanatic located at the very southern tip of Ohio. I’ve loved Priscilla for its fragrance, but this year one simple container had 3 Boardeu with a Diamond Frost a bit in the middle. At the end of Sumer it took over in perfect step as the petunias had fizzled…Probably due to it doing so well, but it was SO seemless that I was purely surprised. Diamond Frost went the distance! 😃 It seems the frost and thaw after breaking dormancy is what threatens the big leaf hydrangeas the most for me. Oh, boy….I’m busy planting indoors, but also ready to rush into planting again 😂 you probably can relate! I’m seeing Hellebore buds. Wanting to order more! Silver shield was one I grew from seed and then either saved seed from or overwintered. Not really comparable to Persian, but can take the sun. Excited to see what hardscaping you’ll be installing! 🌿🌱🌿

Glad to see you well and happy. Looking forward to this new gardening season! My hubs is losing his mind because I am having him remove 3 huge raised beds (12' X 3 1/3' X 27") and relocating them to the front! Moving 3 rose bushes that are too close to a garden bed. Good thing we have a backhoe attachment for the tractor! I think this will finally finish off my garden's hard scapes allowing me to garden vegies and enjoy my flowers!

I managed to fry some Persian shield as well! Good to see you back and thanks for your thoughtful analysis. The Zahara series is really great -- no mildew and they keep going until killed by frost. Easy to do from seed.

It’s so good to see you back. Winter is a time to rest and I’m glad you did. But clearly your idea of rest included LOTS of planning for spring. Some of the new plantings for this season are lovely. I’m looking forward to what comes next.

A little info if you have rabbits. I’ve planted compact purple sunpatiens for several years. Bigger plants do better quicker, but they can’t stand up to the pesky bunnies. I should buy stock in Liquid Fence.

This question is way off topic, but im sorta local to you. Im in Cincinnati. I bought tons of tulip bulbs and i haven't had the chance to plant them. They have been stored outside on a covered porch. Do you think that if i plant them in pots that they would still bloom? Do you think the cold weather we have had may have damaged them? I trust your advice.😊
@SouthernersGarden2 күн бұрын
If they’re damaged they would be mushy. They’re likely fine. Just be careful with the pots so that they don’t hold too much moisture the rest of the winter or they could rot.

I really liked this round up! Thank you! I’m in NC and have sandy soil, so my issue is just too much watering in summer in the heat. I use to use sweet potato vine as a ground cover and then couldn’t find varieties that spread as well. But I always just chopped it back and rooted it around. It would bulk up better when I cut it.
