I love adding a cutoff on the tool end of my hose so it is easy to use the quick connects to switch tools. As an elder lady it saves me many extra steps and yes, keep the metals the same!!!

Hi Matthew! I'm so glad to hear, and see, that you had minimal damage from the hurricane. Like you, and so many others, I feel really bad for the damage others received. Only a truly dedicated gardener would go out in the wind and rain, in their swim trunks, to stake up a tree. 🤣 Kudos, Matthew, that would have been quite a site! 😉 Thank you so much for sharing and letting us know that you survived the hurricane!

Hi Matthew! Considering your weather. everything is still looking so pretty. I like the trees you are adding to the front flower bed. They really did improve the balance. I, also, like your ideas for changes in that bed. It will be so pretty. Your shrub bed is looking good. I could see the hydrangeas through the fence and they are still looking so pretty. The new rose will be pretty. I'm looking forward to seeing where you plant your new plants. Thank you so much for sharing!

Have you seen the weeping butterfly bushes yet? I live in western PA and one of my favorite garden centers was able to get in a few last year. I was able to get purple this year and I want the pink one next year. They should be easier to find for 2025 and they were for 2024.❤

Proven Winners is releasing one called Mop Top that looks really cool. Its foliage looks like rosemary almost.

It's always heartbreaking. Bought a little Cornus kousa 'Satomi', best one in my opinion on offer regarding branching, pruned it more up to my standards, coiled it with wire to redirect growth (bonsai technique), planted it out in a new spot, staked it and then a storm came through and snapped one of said branches off.....God sometimes just decides to FCK you up good for no reason at all.

I'm glad you survived it without major loss! That was a heck of a storm. All of my tomato plants are down, even though i cut them back and reinforced them. That was my biggest loss though, so i can't complain. Even though your garden is wind blown, it's still stunning! If you ever decide to give a public tour, then count me in. 😊

I'm not sure if you could find them in your area, but I just found a hydrangea called "early evolution". It's a panicle, but it starts blooms mid-late May and it looks very much like a lace-cap. It also only gets 2ft x 2ft so you can fit tons in an area
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden3 күн бұрын
I did see those a couple years ago at Cultivate. I think I prefer Tiny Quick Fire for a small paniculata hydrangea.

Helene’s eye passed directly over us in Greenville, SC. We just got electricity back this evening. One container fell over, rolled down the hill and broke. That’s trivial damage compared with people who had trees fall through their roofs or were flooded. Others actually died. It was a terrible storm that reached far inland to Atlanta and Asheville.

This hurricane is the largest I've ever seen as far as the amount of land it has affected, and then it kind of split and about 1/3 of it turned north east toward PA and the bulk of the remnant went west and has been just rotating as a low system over Ohio and the surrounding midwestern states in a westerly spin. Really out of the normal weather pattern. Very unprecedented! Thanks for the update. Glad you are safe and your gardens did fairly well.

Glad it wasn't too bad for you. Fortunately, it wasn't here either. We were in the flood path, here in NE Appalachia Alabama. All of our EMA in our area are raising funds, and supplies for our neighbors, in our neighboring states.

I'm about 70 miles to your west and have been playing pick up sticks (and limbs) all day. Glad your damage was minimal. PS - I purchased "The Hydrangea Book" on your recommendation, and I have been enjoying it so far. Thanks for the book suggestion. Do you have any other favorites?

I feel so bad for your garden. Us gardeners can have our hard work knocked out in minutes from bad weather. I have litterly stood and cried after my yard was devastated. It's just part of gardening but does not take away the hurt!

Well it could have been worse I guess, but oh my. I feel for you, storms are always a fret. We have baseball size hail last spring and we spent MONTHS getting everything cleaned up. It took almost 6 weeks to get the roof and siding replaced on every building. Just SO stressful. 😢 Hang tough you will get there.

Welcome to my world down in south Texas. To go without rain for a long time is the norm. I get so jealous of your beautiful roses and dahlias. Even during a drought they look good to me.

That’s because they get drip irrigation honestly. This stuff would have looked way worse otherwise.

Glad it wasn’t worse, Matthew. I’m just considering it the end of the gardening season here in Kentucky, as far as trying to make the garden pretty. Going to now do fall plantings and gather leaves for leaf mold.

I pretty much was faced with the same thing here in Columbus, Ohio. The wind was just incredible but the plants held up pretty well. I ended up pulling half of my petunias as the wind did a number on them, and brought in some fresh asters to take their place. Some tree branches down but luckily they didn't break any of my rose canes. Was a good idea to come out Thursday to tie things down for sure.

Here in VA, we had more than 3 weeks of NO rain and 100 degrees or better. I simply could not work in that. The humidity was about 80% if we were lucky. I stopped watering with my hose and let the sprinkler system reach wherever it could. At the end of it all, lots of things had died or were very damaged. I decided to dig out whatever had done poorly and replant with drought tolerant, deer resistant plants. It’s pricey and hard work but worth it for the end results over time.
