RIP. Albert Scott Crossfield, one of the BEST test pilots, who ever lived! First man to surpass Mach 2.0 speed with the D-558-2! First test pilot of the X-15, fully completed the engines' test & the aerodynamic testing, performing 30 flights... Survived an emergency crash, later the XLR 99 engine's explosion in a ground test. Played an important role in the development of the pressurized pilot suits, & the design of the X 15s cockpit, etc.

At the very end, almost a throwaway comment, the XLR-99 engine, at idle, was doing Mach 3 with the brakes on!

If it was cool to be a kid back in these days it must have been something else to have been an adult involved in these programs. I followed these programs as best I could and was fed a risky stream of information by my AF uncle. One very early morning in '68 we were removed from the flight line as we watched a very distant SR-71 take off from the guest field at the base he was on. We had a North American and a Lockheed plant in our small town courtesy of the Speaker of the House at that time. I think it was '62 that a friend's dad was in something called MACV somewhere called Vietnam but could not talk about it either.

Look, kids: no hilarious vibrations, no screeching metal and other fake nonsense sounds, no highly trainer&skilled pilot shaking the stick like an idiot when anything surprising like "ballooning, not turning" happens.

Saying the X 15 isn't a plane is the same as saying the X 1 didn't set the speed of sound record. "Stupid is as stupid does "
@sammysouth83728 ай бұрын
Say what? One has nothing to do with the other. That the X1 went faster than the speed of sound is a fact. Whether or not the X15 is a plane is not a question of facts, it depends on your definition of what constitutes a plane and what a unique air vehicle. If someone wishes to define a plane in terms of an air vehicle where lift is produced by the wings, then no X15 isn’t a plane. If you have evidence indicating those little stubby wings any produced some lift then sure you can call it a plane

Notice how the horizon is level at 300,000 feet yet we are told at 80,000feet the sr71 can see the curve lol
@collin53763 жыл бұрын
The horizon is curved, the camera quality isnt good enough to show it. I wish Musk or Bezos was offering free flights for those that believe the earth is flat. Lol
@nicholasgargano73963 жыл бұрын
@@collin5376 really, reality is based on substance, have you been on one of these fictional flights? The picture is perfectly OK, zero curve. Horizon at eye level impossible on a ball.
@markynose2 жыл бұрын
@@nicholasgargano7396 I think maybe you should go to sea, or to the salar de uyuni. You don't need to be high up to see the curvature of the earth. Also... Look through a camera (not a phone) and move the lens up and down across the horizon, you can make or remove any curve you want. You can't do that with your eye though, well, you can, but you won't be looking directly at the horizon...
@TM-nj6vd2 жыл бұрын
That’s not 300k feet. The highest an X-15 had flown by the end of what’s covered in this video was 136k feet. You can also clearly see that the horizon isn’t straight around 24:50-25:00. You should talk to an optometrist if that looks straight.

@@nicholasgargano7396 I find it hard to believe that people actually believe the earth is flat. I'm convinced they're just all in on some big troll to mess with people. I know there are lots of stupid people out there (on average, 50% of the people you meet are stupider than you are), but it is so ridiculously easy to prove to yourself that the earth is round. There is no single model that the flat-earthers have put forward that doesn't have obvious contradictions & impossibilities, all easily explained by a spherical earth. I mean, long before there was CGI we had photos that obviously showed the earth is round. And the whole crux of it is, why would any government or person go to such great lengths to hide a flat earth? For what possible reason could someone do this? Not to mention, humans are awful at keeping things secret. There is just no way some secret cabal could control all the info around the spherical earth. And if there *was* such a cabal, do you think all these flat earth forums and message boards would be allowed to stay up? No way! They'd disappear and the people would be silenced/arrested. I mean, they all seem to think this is the work of some secret cabal -- making people disappear is a lot easier than faking a round earth! lmao.
