I struggle with finding frames that appeal to me. Often, I can only shop where my insurance is accepted, and then I'm limited by what is available at those places. Discovering your channel last year has really helped me understand the importance to finding my ideal frames and lenses. Hopefully this year I'll finally have the opportunity to discover and use something uniquely me.

Yeah given that Luxottica controls EyeMed in the US it really challenges what frames and lenses Opticians can supply without losing customers from the largest insurance company in the US .

Love this. I would advise people to spend more money on their lenses and less on the frame if the budget is limited. Don’t cheap out on lenses. And once you try Reykjavik eyes frames, they spoil you and you can’t go back to regular frames

To me, glasses are a means to an end. I'm colorblind and have a heavy prescription. I've had to wear glasses since the start of primary school 40yrs ago. To me, they're like underwear. As long as they fit, and let me see, I'm good. I'd love to be able to experience the crazy definition others have and be able to wear glasses for fashion vs purpose but, I know it would be a waste on my eyes. Though I do enjoy seeing the vast variety that's out there and you channel has been so awesome for that!

Great video Robert as always. I am very happy with my 3 pairs of glasses you helped me with. Reykjavík eyes, Masunaga and Lucas de Stael. All with glass Zeiss lenses. And, thanks to these lenses, (I was sceptical about going down the MultiVision glasses) when I put my first pair of the Reykjavík eyes on with the lenses, I was amazed and took to them fairly instantly. It is worth investing on your lenses and your frames. My vision has improved tenfold with these glass Zeiss lenses. They’re amazing.

This was really informative, thank you for sharing! I totally agree with the idea that investing in good prescription glasses is worth it. For me, eye health is a priority, and I'd rather spend a little extra to ensure I'm getting quality lenses and a proper fit. It's something we use daily, so it's important to get it right. It’s a bonus if they look good on me too. Very important! 😅

I like to cite what the average American spends annually on coffee when people speak about prices with me. If you can spend $1200 on coffee, you can spend $700 on your vision

Why do people point out America for this sterotype? They don't even consume that much coffee per person
@TheHi-T
@TheHi-T 18 күн бұрын
I rather spend $700 on a few pair of glasses than coffee. I purchase online because the quality control has proven to be better than the walk-in shops I purchased from in the past. (Lens falling out of frame several times, new Transition lens peeling, & after 3 months trying to tell me they actually replaced the scratched lens with a new one). Purchasing online does mean doing research on what lens type will give me the best optical clarity & impact resistance (Trivex). I drink all my coffee at home. I receive loads of coffee gift cards. I plan on using the gift cards at the airport or while I travel overseas. Better spending gift card than out of pocket. Yes, the coffee chains do calculate the exchange rate. That money saved means I can afford to buy an extra pair of frames.

are you a child that you cannot even make a logical rational statement . Your logic is soo flawed its laughable . Firstly you compare a single time immediate purchase such as glasses to a cost that is spread across a whole year as if everyone earns their salary as a whole once per year . Upfront cost is why monthly payment plans exist and its one of the most important factors of purchasing . Secondly because one purchase is excessive that doesnt justify getting another excessive purchase . Thirdly coffee is seen has a far more acceptable value for the price compared to plastic frames and lenses which are well known to be extornitate why would someone willingly get ripped off if there are alternatives .

I found this video interesting and insightful, thanks! One thing that you didn't specifically mention is when you buy an expensive, high quality frame, you're going to want to keep using it as your prescription changes over time. You want to make sure that your optical shop will let you keep using the frame when you buy new lenses.

I do not have a lot of money since i got ill and can no longer work in my job. But i saved up the money for my new glasses (also saved up cupons and waited for the right price reduction program. . . . ). It is something you wear every day all day. So i decided to get Zeiss progressive lenses (with PhotoFusion X and DuraVision Platinum Coating) in a very light Titanflex Frame. UVP was arround 1000 bucks. But with every discount applied i payed ~600. And really i think it was worth it.

Reykjavik Eyes frames with Zeiss Smartlife individual progressive lens; well North of $1,000 but also well worth the price. I was originally concerned about both the apparent hype for these frames and the ability of Robert to fit them remotely (I am in the USA) but decided to take a chance and go for it. I am sure glad that I did. The frames are as amazing as he claims, and the glasses fit 'perfectly' when I first put them on out of the box. The clarity of vision now is markedly better than I have had with other recent glasses. To me it is worth the price for the impact on quality of life. "A workman is worthy of his wages." I have no problem with the premium for superior service and quality.

Excellent video. think it comes down to a shift in priorities. I recently had Robert curate an eyewear wardrobe for me which was never my plan. Prior to this I wore a pair of acetate Warby Parker’s which were “fine.” However, after watching Robert’s videos, I had an epiphany about how I approach my eyewear, which was I had no approach at all. As a professional photographer I own 2 high end cameras and only a few prime lenses. I have used other brands in the past, but investing in hands on engineering, exacting standards and beautiful design, psychologically connects me to my shooting experience which for me is a priority. My choices are not about name, but about uncompromising quality, thoughtfulness and the manifesto behind each camera maker: Simple user interface, excellent optics and tactile quality. I trusted Robert to choose all my frames and custom tints because his taste and knowledge are impeccable as he demonstrates in his videos. I would have never chosen a couple of the frames he selected and yet they have become my favorites. It’s a psychological game changer every time I wear them. I can’t emphasize the emotional impact this has on your every day life, how you present yourself to the world, and most importantly, how you see yourself with new eyes. I have a well balanced range of frames, GAST being among them and one of my favorite pairs. And it’s not just about style. The optics in my glasses are the best and most exacting prescription I’ve had and as someone who “sees” for a living, that’s a crucial factor. I’m also happy to be supporting independent artists and businesses that align with my values. High-quality unique products, that are a more sustainable approach to consumption. Supporting family-owned businesses like The Spectacle Factory and Robert’s clear ethos contributes to a more thoughtful and intentional market.

Another great video. However, I noticed in many of your videos that the exposure (brightness) keeps changing up and down! This can be fixed in post however its best to fix it in camera by shooting in manual exposure mode and make sure ISO is set to manual as well as white balance. This will prevent exposure and color fluctuation.

I paid $1,500 for my most recent pair of glasses. I was initially remorseful for spending 5 times the amount I'd ever paid for glasses at any other time, but I quickly outgrew that feeling. I love my glasses! FYI I am in my first ever pair of progressive lenses (near top of the line from Zeiss, with a tint plus photofusion and AR + Duravision Platinum coatings). My frames are handmade in Japan (by Blake Kuwahara and took 6 months to make). I know I didn't have to spend that much on glasses, but my eyesight is precious to me, and how I feel about myself in my glasses is equally as important!

Ive been wearing my Mente in black daily for almost a year now and they look and feel as new as the first day! Just want to express my appreciation for your videos. Have watched most of your videos over the last 1-2 years, educating myself on different eyewear and frames. Would have gone to the Spectacle Factory after watching your videos, except I'm in Canada and international travel for frames does seem a bit excessive. Recently purchase a pair of Matsuda frames (Masunaga Aster was a close competitor) and Zeiss lens. My previous lens was an Essilor lens, which was already a noticeable upgrade over the previous one. Zeiss feels to be another noticeable improvement.

My perspective. For 48 years, they have been the first thing I have done when I wake. I only take them off to swim or clean the lenses, and the last thing I do at night. I can justify getting what I want. But I do have a question as someone who has been binge-watching your content. Please correct or advise me. I am having difficulty getting optometrists or labs to duplicate the combination of lens treatments you show on your channel. Are a lot of the lenses, coatings, and treatments you share "Custom"? Or are these things that regular small-town shops or labs should be able to provide? This year I am shopping rather than just buying. When I ask if they can do X,Y or, Z (for example tinted, flash coated, photochromic, progressives.) I often get a "Our Lab only offers these limited options.

I had a discussion with my friends about eye health & safety while playing sports. They go to the courts 3+ times a week. They wear their everyday glasses. They are risking getting hit in the eye by a racket, ball, shuttlecock, or worse pieces of the lenses & frames getting into the eye. I have seen it happen several times. They say spending their work health/vision benefits on sports protective eyewear is a waste. They are saving the benefit in case they sit or break the frame or lens by accident. If they forget to spend it, so be it, they say.

Unfortunately, for me, the optician I use to pay $500 for a pair of glasses retired. He was honest & provide excellent service. Since then, I haven't been able to find a decent knowledgeable expert producing products with good quality control. That is why I purchase online. When I need adjustments I pay a fee at a random shop. This channel & eye doctor channels have helped me to purchase lenses I would most benefit from. Purchasing online, means doing research. I can only purchase sport frames with Trivex lenses online. The walk-in shops never heard of Trivex. Some shops tried to sell me Rx safety glasses when I told them I need a frame for racket sports.🤦🤦‍♂ Depending where you live in the world, by law, PD must be given to the client after the eye test and when purchasing new eyewear. Some "experts" have attempted to not give it to me.

It means I basically do not wear the second pair out of the house as they are noticeable to see reflections, Both frames are high quality, I got a killer deal in town where I got 2 frames of JF Rey for 150 each! (Not including the lenses of course, but online JF rey frames run minimum 400-500) Unfortunately they changed ownership recently and now I can’t get them that cheap anymore but I will keep these ones for a while they’re definitely better quality PS I am sorry I didn’t buy my glasses from you! The glasses that I’m wearing cost around $650; it’s a Zeiss lens fitted on a Carrera frame. I’d say it’s worth every single penny! No lens can match the clarity and color definition of a Zeiss lens. Both the lens and the frame are stylish and ultra-light. But to me, the most surprising thing is the durability of both the lens and the frame. I’ve dropped them at least 5 times in the past couple of years and accidentally sat on them two times. Nothing happened. That's why I say that expensive glasses are worth it.

I should add that the 2nd pair of sunglasses lenses were free and part of the deal I got when buying the Varilux XR lenses. 20-odd years ago I was told "No" but I decided to stick with them as my (-6.5) lenses were very thick in plastic compared to glass. I just made sure the visor of my full face helmet was kept down. Even on rainy or misty days the visor was only cracked open and not fully open unless I was at very low speeds.

This is a good topic. I'm not paying more than $250 for frames. I have Kering brands: Gucci, Saint Laurent, Montblanc & Hugo Boss. Waiting on Alexander McQueen frames to arrive.

Now do a video on sporting prescription glasses. Been looking and it is horrible out there. Lots of indirect inserts. Vuarnet has the only shield Rx and barely talks about them. Just a horrid set of choices.

Robert..... thank you for the awesome videos and keep them coming. I sent you an email and it did not get a response. Hopefully you will see this comment. I am in the market for new glasses soon and would like to work with you as my Optical provider. I would like to know how we can successfully do this with my living in the United States? I require progressive lenses and regardless of your not thinking much of them in most cases, I love photochromic lenses. Unfortunately, I am not in a financial position to buy two separate pairs of glasses. I want the lenses that are available from the German based company that you recommend. I would like to have their Smart Life lenses with the best most comprehensive coding package available. I would also like to have my lenses be made of trivex. I would also like to get your recommendation for a good titanium frame, as I do not like plastic or acetate. I would also like to get an idea of cost for this from you? I hope it is possible to work with you directly if not, please reach out and let me know how I can find a dealer for these quality products in my area, which is the southwestern part of the United States I would love to answer any of the questions that you might have or provide any other information that you wouldn't mind need. I would love to hear from you, please reach out. Thank you very much and I hope to hear from you soon! I love your videos, please keep them and the unbiased patient-focused information they contain coming! Again, I sent you two emails if you'd like to respond those as well.

Cartier is my number one favorite brand. I have 9 pairs, 7 of them are vintage. My second favorite brand is vintage Jean Paul Gaultier. I have over 15 pairs of them. The last ones I purchased weeks ago are valued between $500 and $700, but I got them from a premium eyewear botique in Taiwan for $200. They're 100% authentic and brand new. The most I've paid for a pair of eyewear are my Cartier Siciers, whch I got in 2005 for $1700.

An simple stainless steel frame is best. To be had in high quality from eBay from China for 17$ each. I bought 3 of those frames. Fit as a glove. Extremely sturdy. No need for expensive stuff at all. There is no practical or functional difference between an 17$ stainless frame and an 700$ designer artpiece.

Yes there is, just that you haven't experienced it. Not all expensive frames are art pieces. Some are way more comfortable and practical than the $17 frames.

@thespectaclefactory Not really. If they were more comfy then that would be worth an markup of 1$. If it fits, it fits as well withould shelling out money.

Robert, the glasses you were wearing during the video were too reflective and this gave them a rather cheap look. Maybe it's just because of your camera though I am not sure.

Ridiculously overpriced. Glasses are a racket. You can get them for very cheap if you know where to look. Lenses are the only part that can justify the price, there's tech going into it, and that's the only part that actually matters for their intended purpose - vision. The frames have absolutely no reason to be expensive. Specially something hideous, like that clear plastic ones he shown. Money can't buy taste lmao. Anyway, you can get perfectly good glasses for 100 bucks. Of course I'm european, americans love overspending on everything. Hell, the guy talks about rayban as being "over expensive". I paid like 90 bucks for mine while he's peddling stuff that looks way worse for 300+.
