Here's what I use: - grey for general use, especially on bright days. - polarized smoked amber for partially overcast or sunny winter days (to help cut snow glare). - Yellows for night driving which helps reduce glare and makes it easier on my eyes due to my astigmatism

The last bit flicked the lightbulb in my mind! I bought oakley sapphire mirrored glasses, but I got super disappointed that instead of seeing blue tint I am seeing brown, and could not figure out why. Now of course it makes sense. Thank you!

Thank you very much. I have been wearing the same sunglasses for 45 years. Serengeti Vermilion Wraps. They have a Rose colored, photochromic, double gradient, polarized lens. That is perfect indoors and out, (you don't have to take off your glasses when you come inside, the lenses lighten automatically) in snow or water, and even driving at night (if you don't have cataracts). The only downside is looking at details on your cell phone, because of the polarization effect. I have several pairs, and new ones in unopened boxes. (in case I lose/break one) The price is very reasonable.

Very helpful video, thank you ! Grey polarized lenses are the best for me. They keep the colours true and eliminate the glares. While driving, they even take away the reflection of the dashboard on the windshield. Never wearing anything else.

I just recently had Lasik done and at 50 and wearing glasses for most of my life, Sunglasses are a new thing to me. I have mostly steered towards brown lenses because I find the way it shades the world very appealing. I found this video eye opening, pun intended, as to what other shade of lens colors can offer. I still need to find a good set to use at night for driving, since the operation does create a more pronounced bloom around bright lights.

I have the transition gen 8 amethyst with ray ban hexagonal in black and the amber/brown version of it with a golden ray ban. The view trough the purple lenses is good to relax and looks so cool, and the brown one makes everything warm and smooth ^^ i love purple and brown much, very cool 😊 Fits my face perfect, first i thought purple is for girls, but since I bought them, I'm absolutely sure, it looks beautiful on both :). Purple is my fav too 😊❤️ especially green colours looks cool :) I'm a really big fan of the transition lenses the new gen 8 is very fast with the tint ^^

The magma orange for outdoor use looks great, and I like the idea of the yellow for use in front of a computer screen, which we're all exposed to quite a lot these days. Will have to try both of these tints. Cheers.

I liked the yellow very much. It makes especially the foliage super rich and bright. I didn't like the orange, to me it made things dull, I never bought the classic orange cycling glasses. The "gray" you chose wasn't neutral, it had blue tint, the problem with gray sunglasses it that they almost always have some parasitic, usually cooling, tint. When they don't, then gray is quite pleasant also for everyday use. I'm with you on the brown, I like it.

I wish I had known about the color shift with red mirrors a couple of years ago. I ordered full sun grey lenses w/ full red mirrors. I was surprised by the rather strong blue that resulted. I really don't like the blue color. I should have ordered a silver or blue mirror instead. Live and learn, I suppose. Sigh... Thanks Robert.

I think for me it would be brown. Nice warm, good contrast. Good for driving and walking around most environments. Polarized on top of that makes clarity even better. But might not be able to get that for my prescription glasses. I need the photo chromatic kind like Zeiss has of transitions. First time getting glasses.

I have auto tinting prescription glasses and chose purple for aesthetic reasons. It is quite sensitive though so I almost always have at least a slightly purple vision. I really like it and it's nice to see my aesthetic choice also was a good practical one.

I tried blue once, when I was younger and I thought they looked cool but they were awful and I have never liked grey for the reasons you stated. Orange is great for sailors because both the sea and the sky are blue. However you need to take them off as the light fades and you are trying to pick out a certain coloured light on shore to navigate towards.

My two favorite Oakley is a pink and an amber. Both give exceptional contrast for cycling or driving. Both keep the world brighter without letting too much light into your eye. My third pair is just a dark for very bright days

Over many years, I have tried green, brown, grey, polarised and non-polarised. The green were photochromic and pleasant, but would never darken enough. Especially in the summer. Brown has too much impact on colour. A lot of my driving has the sea in view and the reflection from that can be very strong. Polarisation helps enormously. I've currently got polarised grey and pretty happy with them. My prime need is driving, and particularly driving into low sun - something that is very common for me (location and time of day). The one oddity is that red or orange metallic cars leap out at me, most obviously some the cars hailing from the far east (Kia, etc.)

For daylight it's a simple thing basically, pick the color you feel most comfortable. My concern today is the strong blue light that many car headlights have today that are horrible to meet at night and I have found some yellow polarized clip-on glasses that helps the situation somewhat. For anyone out there - the glare free headlights aren't good enough and have a slow reaction time while at the same time also generate a strong blue light and weak on the lower color temperatures.

Wow Rob, that was SUPER USEFUL and extremely informative; thank you. As a follow-up could you do a similar video with gradients and bi-gradients? The information about the yellow lense was very useful; I will definitely need to get myself a pair of those. Rob, I also wanted to ask you a question. As someone who lives too far from your shop to visit regularly and with too many pairs of glasses to send via the post; what is your opinion about general public using ultrasonic cleaners to maintain their glasses? Is it a good thing to do? Or are we going to do more harm than good? I use lens wipes and e-cloths to maintain my lenses but dirt builds up along the edge of the lenses and nose pads, in difficult to reach places. So should I invest in an ultrasonic bath and if so do I use cleaners or just filtered water? Thanks.

I recently "upgraded" to a pair of Essilor Transitions Xtractive with a green tint. I've been using the base grey Transitions for a decade. I hardly feel that the new pair is different. Or maybe it works so well ie. it shifts naturally. I definitely don't notice the green tint. Guess my brain tunes it out like you said.

for me most important colors are during fishing I use grey brown orange and yellow grey only during worst of sumer brown most of time orange when it is cloudy and yellow when it is really cloudy and during sunset just to see what is under water better of course all polarized yellow is also best color for work safety glasses in workplaces with terrible light condition like all of my works till now

In the 90’s you could get Suncloud rose made from high quality glass and I miss them more than almost anything else from my youth. I paid $70 per pair when I was in high school and believe me, it took a minute to make $70 back then.

With regard to sunglasses, I reflexively buy polarized lenses since they reduce glare. Are there lenses that are both polarized and tinted? If so what would you recommendation be for a good all purpose tint or mirror coating to go with polarized lenses for driving? For photographers if that's different?

So this is a very interesting subject and one that I have pondered as a person who wears glasses and a motorcyclist who has to try to advise people on different visor colors. I myself ride into the sun for both my morning commute and my afternoon commute. My eyes are sensitive to light and find myself squinting even with dark smoke sunglasses. I do find the trouble with dark smoke in cloudy to shady areas like you described. Would there be a good alternative for me or am I stuck with wearing shades of gray?
