Douglas Murray, The Spectator's associate editor, joins Cindy Yu to discuss why monarchies are good for politics. Americans have dynasties of their own - the Clintons, Bushes and Kennedys - why don't they understand kings and queens?

I caught the Ali Velshi nonsense with Andrew Roberts on MSNBC. The ignorance and the hypocrisy shocked me. Velshi's family are Muslims originally from Gujurat. I was in Gururat on business, 20 years ago, when Muslims were killed by Hindu mobs. Velshi was born in Kenya and grew up in Canada. Had it not been for the Commonwealth his family would probably still be in Gujurat. Colonialism allowed him to get to Canada.
@wilfredsterling2124

Colonialism also involved murder on a mass scale (in fact genocide) and billions/trillions of today's pounds in theft. Not the sort of petty theft that can get juvenile's labelled scum by the Sun. In fact, it was coordinated and managed looting using the best intelligence and military actions available. In fact, this was organised crime. I can't say in fact those jewels worn on the monarch's head were stolen because I would need to check beforehand. However, based on all the other theft, those jewels were probably nabbed from some country, or dug up by enslaved people in the colonies. If Britain (including media organisations such as the spectator) were willing to have a balanced and honest discussion about British and European colonialism, then perhaps the commonwealth would not be at its most vulnerable point. Equally, due to the inconvenience of these facts, a true discussion about the British empire involving a diverse range of people's affected may make it more vulnerable than it is now. The German's have been able to move on from the shame of the holocaust and perhaps their colonial crimes because they were forced to face the facts. They are now more socially, politically and economically stable than the UK. Consequently, I recommend Britain faced facts about empire. As evidence demonstrates this could assist the nation in becoming more socially, politically and economically stable. If not evidence demonstrates that we will continue regressing to more and more immaturity when journalists and public speakers offer perspectives and factually correct arguments that inconvenience/shame certain media audiences. These media organisations will then further this low level of debate and inflame outrage that clouds rational discussion and comment. If any moderator reads this, I must add that given the Spectator has guests like Lawrence Fox on their shows, I don't have much hope that the Spectator will change it's agenda. Instead, I expect this tittle tattle play ground nonsense will continue to be broadcast to viewers who perhaps just want to be offended to justify their own desire to offend. What this amounts to is people who want to feel like they are victims of something they are not victims of. Which is probably because they are victims of something else. From here Psychological and social theories are best suited for explaining the mindset and behaviours of Spectator journalism, and the audiences who consume and participate in Spectator journalism. God save Britain!! This may be a more pressing matter for the Spectator rather than concerning themselves with CNN. Scotland want independence and younger generations in N.I are reconsidering whether they want to be governed by Westminster. However, the Spectator do not seem to care about finding solutions to the threat of Britain's breakup. Instead, they have opted for Fox like news coverage, masqueraded as respectable informed journalism. Like Fox news they made it possible for a totally incompetent man to lead a country and further the decline of their nation. Therefore, what are the motives of your agenda.

@@hebber1961 Maybe this is how the debate should be framed: The Progressives V The Regressives (Proud to be regurgitating old ideas, beliefs, values that no longer function to hold a nation of people together). But, Hey, Divide and Rule, attracted to power to the extent of desiring authoritarianism, and Liz Truss blames everything on the people rather than the system. The system she seems to admire the most is the Chinese system. I imagine she and the money that buy's her wants a A.I techno-Victorian style morality of obedient and robotic like people. When she talks I detect a shadow jumping out of her that is violent and schizophrenic or sociopathic/ this is who the regressives want as their leader!!! Why? Because they don't want cultural evolution, they want to reduce the world down to material parts, with complete and utter control. They want to be the leaders running their subjects like figures in a mammoth computer system. Their beliefs and attitudes that can be detected by their nihilistic arrogance and ignorance is material worthy of a grotesque dystopian science fiction vision of the future. Another question, is this why they are unwilling to listen and debate and listen to solid evidence? Is it really because they hate being proved wrong so much that they would rather screw the nation and its people? Are they really that arrogant/ignorant and sadistic?

@@sanasama2209 This is about the reporting on the British monarchy by American Journalists. The British monarchy is synonomous (I can't spell, sorry!!). Anyway, the monarchy and the identity it represents among certain media, political and other establishment circles doesn't like talking about the crimes that happened under it's rule. It doesn't want to question what it means/represents and whether it is a force for good as the UK moves on into another era. This circle of people do not want to face the historical facts. Instead they want to write history like some sort of medieval novel that the great Cervantes took the total piss out of in his 1616 masterpiece. The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha. Even in this title he was poking fun at the stupidity of following such ideas that emanate from the noble and god given rights of monarchs. Anyway, that was 400 hundred years ago and today people have access to even more of the insanity of such an institution. The question that Douglas Murray needs to be asking rather than having one of his regular tantrums, is, can the monarchy reform and overcome problems such as the ink running out of their pens during diplomatic meetings? Can the institution stem the god given creation of befuddled princes from hanging out with sex traffickers for the god given right to go to bed with under age girls? I can only speculate, but the poor queen probably felt a certain number of years older after discovering her son was guilty. Can Douglas Murray understand any of this? As for Cindy Yu, all she cares about is consumer goods, fuck knows what else?

Well, actually they would be. After the original article in NYT which was by a black, female Professor, 4000 academics signed an open letter supporting it. In fact the ‘woke’ movement has its home in academia, and the ‘long march through the institutions’ announced by Gramsci, Marcuse and other communists of the mid 20th century has ensured that the contagion has spread to the educated professional classes including especially the media, the law, and the apparatus of government. America is the epicentre of this cultural revolution although Britain has its own ‘woke’ problem, equally centred in academia, but it is less bitter and savage perhaps because of the tradition of respect and tolerance exemplified by our beloved late Queen.

There are many Americans who respect the queen and the monarchy. However there are those who will always disregard what Britain has done for the world. Is it jealousy? The monarchy is not political and the head of state not part of politics, as such. Even though all laws have to have the consent of the monarch; and do we really care what they say? Years ago we would have known none of this. The media now give the twisted views of the few, a platform.

A rock at the bottom of the Indian ocean is older than the entire UK. What's your point The fact that Britain has a longer history is not an achievement. It is just happenstance People got to Europe and Asia long before they got to the Americas. And that is the reason Europ and Asia have longer histories than the Americas. That is the reason they are called the old world. The fact that human beings, who first originated in Africa, got to Europ befor they got to the Americas is not an achievement. It is just evolution. That is how human beings have evolved.

In New Zealand there is a debate whether the township of Picton should revert to its previous Māori name. One reason given is Picton was a slave owner. That has to be local Māori calling out the cowardice of the woke media, who will not mention that traditional Māori society would viewed a world without slavery as lunacy.

I found the Monarchy easiest to understand through the ceremony of the removal of the Instruments of Office, at the funeral. You don't have to understand the Monarchy at every level in order to see the necessity for that role. I see the Monarchy as a continuity of legal authority. A Queen or King is not my spiritual mum or dad, and personally I had to pick the Christianity out of the ceremony for easier understanding. Another person might see the Defender of the Faith role as most important. Of course, the Queen was also a deeply respected human being. DM is absolutely right to point out that countries without a monarchy go to great lengths to recreate one.

Also I'm pretty sure Boris Johnson's father was famous and Boris Johnson's sister is a famous journalist who's on television so what are you guys talking about. C C . 22. British Monarchs are crowned in a religious ceremony because during the coronation ceremony they are also anointed and are the head of the church as well as the. Head of State. And the instruments of State I.e. the Crown, the Orb and the Sceptre are an integral part of that religious ceremony. You will be able to observe this next year when the Coronation of King Charles III takes place as happened at the late Queen’s Coronation.

And there were so many instances all over KZbin. Very distressing. I really enjoyed this narrator’s explanation of American political dynasties. I've found that Americans online have been very supportive, but we have to realise that US politics is so extraordinarily polarised, that the left simply feel obliged to carry out their culture wars wherever their foreign correspondents go, because of the expectation of their supporters. The British government is seen by them as right of centre, as it is, so the NYT and CNN have been taking lumps out of Britain, in such an ignorant way you wouldn't expect from educated people. Making profound errors about the British Constitution etc. But then again, I understand they're employing British anti monarchists and British socialist writers to publicly self flagellate, an opportunity which is denied them in even the British left wing press, because the Queen had such high approval ratings, those papers always refused to sanction these kind of attacks. Some people think the new owners of CNN won't tolerate such "divisive politics" for much longer, but that's their business. And I wonder why President Biden wanted to come to the Queen's funeral at all, if he thinks like that as well, except to bathe in the reflective glory of a head of state so overwhemingly popular at home and respected abroad, in contrast to his own meagre poll ratings........

The longer I live in the UK, the more I appreciate the institution of constitutional monarchy. There is something special about the sense of stability and continuity that lasts beyond a four or eight year tenure, prevents a 180 turns or unsightly head-butting of prime ministers with presidents, not to mention impeachments or political attacks that erode trust. You can say many things about British monarchy now, but you can’t deny that they don’t give out an impression of betraying the UK or selling it off to another country/monarch. They also remain the symbol of traditional and even British values of patience, good humour and perseverance, which is increasingly difficult to find in a multi-culti, God-is-dead or my-God-is-more-important, or woke extremist society. Here is hoping that King Charles would uphold good standards of impartiality and remains apolitical and Christian in his approach rather than trying to “bro” with Islam to show how inclusive and embracing he is. We certainly don’t need a King to invite even more extremists over!!

That the hero of the film was a committed Christian who was trying his best to use British Power to suppress the slave trade in East Africa. British Christians were in fact the first group of people in world history who looked at slavery, decided it was an ungodly thing, and spent lives and treasure FORCING rulers to get ride of the thing. And and Murray says, while George III might have been the enemy of American republicanism. he shared with the late queen a since Christian faith that let him gladly sign a paper outlawing the slave trade.

And since WWII, the US Navy has kept the world safe for economic and political freedom, just like the British Navy did for 200 years prior. Of course the UK and other Commonwealth Countries help in this endeavor with bases and intelligence, but the unrivaled naval superiority of the United States is why there isn’t piracy on the high seas and why you can have international shipping.

An accident of birth. Did Nero or Caligula teach you nothing? The arguments are no different than those present in racism! Am I wrong?! Treat people differently because of how they were born?! @@AdamBechtol Lots of people are treated differently through no fault or achievement of their own. Do you treat your own children differently from other peoples children? I should hope so. So yes it IS a strange concept you are absolutely correct but the monarchy *does* fulfil a symbolic and ancient function. The living embodiment of history, tradition and continuity in a world that changes at bewildering speed. Is a monarchy much different then from the function of religion? Not really. But look how religion continues to persist and how it can be a force for good or evil. It might be irrational but a lot of humans seem to need it 🤷‍♀️. If it can fulfil a benign, positive purpose that tempers political power then who are we to say it’s wrong!? The monarch has very little real power but they DO have responsibility and duty. They have wealth and privilege but use it to serve not rule. Queen Elizabeth was accepted and respected for doing just that - her duty. She didn’t ask for it but she put her duty first and that is a quality to be admired.

@@AdamBechtol Since you ask: Yes, I think you are wrong. If Elizabeth had comported herself as a Nero or Caligula (or even as a Mohammed bin Salman), the downsides of the institution would have been vivid, but the English decided centuries ago that that way of kingship is unacceptable to them. As far as unearned privilege is concerned, Mr Murray points out that such is to be found everywhere, under various systems of government, and including in countries with greater cultural pretenses of equality and classlessness than the UK. Meanwhile, this particular instance of it is viewed by many Brits as beneficial to their political system and national unity. It is completely within the power of the British people to abolish the institution; it is telling that even as of 2022 they haven't.

They also had great respect for Britain and the monarchy and felt themselves part of something larger. You can say this was fawning deference that was unearned but it was there. It is not a coincidence that many in the Empire volunteered to fight in WW1 and WW2 - volunteered not conscripted against genuine fascism and it is also not a coincidence that Māori demanded the right to fight alongside white troops as equals and were granted this. It is also worth pointing out that Princess Elizabeth in her 1947 speech referred to her service to the ‘great imperial FAMILY to which we all belong’. This is not the attitude of Attila the Hun or the Mughals or the Ottomans or Genghis Khan. It’s probably closer to the Roman approach. The Roman Empire lasted for centuries and its influence was so great we feel it now and when they withdrew from Europe we entered the Dark Ages. Be careful what you wish for!

Thank you Douglas, excellent analysis. Academia and the media are the heartland of woke, but there is another aspect to this, which is that many ordinary Americans also feel animus toward Britain and especially our monarchy because they themselves fought for independence from colonial and royal rule. That impedes resistance to the kind of criticism and abuse seen lately. I have been an admirer of the US ever since I worked on an Odeco oil rig in the 80s, but would say now, especially after the last ten days that many Americans should be and are worried about the state of their country and the virulence of the divisions which have opened up. Perhaps some of them may be secretly wondering about how 60% of the world population watched the funeral of Queen Elizabeth, but the only event that I would imagine attracted that kind of attention across the pond would have been 9/11. Who do you love, America?

Both our countries are full of the divisions around the woke ideas Douglas was talking about, though maybe it’s more scary on your side of the pond. I think people here are held together more by tradition and monarchy as we saw last week. And I think you’re right about the internet, people get on one side and then learn to hate the other from a distance. I found the time the Queen was lying in state reassuring because we heard from so many ordinary people, including many Americans, instead of the usual characters that dominate the media who thrive on conflict. Now it’s back to normal, if it bleeds, it leads... Please believe that I and many other Brits are watching how things are going in the US because it’s so important in the world, and if we sound angry at you all, it’s not because we hate you, but because we’re scared our way of life is in danger and the likes of the woke academics are fanning the flames. *Eye Roll* As an American (living in uber Republican Texas), I can say his description of the national mood towards The Queen is so far off the mark and not at all representative of American's at large. It was all that was on news for 10 days, the National Cathedral in DC rang the bell 96 times, all flags across the nation were flown at half mast, and sky scrappers in all the major cities were lit up with the Union Jack. In March, Gallup polling found 86% of Americans viewed GB very favorably....reflecting that the average American has an insane affection for the UK. So, while some negative ink may have spilled, the facts hardly back up his overarching thesis. But going out and saying "wow there are actually two groups of people that don't hate each other in this world" won't get you much airtime!

Excellent point. Our local library and all public buildings, in a small (population-wise) state far removed from the UK, had their U.S. flags at half-mast until the Queen’s funeral. That is a huge sign of respect that more accurately reflects the mood of the American people. CNN is not real life.

Few people on this video are going to be interested in your patronising attitude towards the Queen, however diplomatic you think you are being from supposedly holding back following her death. If you're from this country, any criticism you may have is so marginal, compared to the overwhelming respect she has in the country of her birth, as to make your voice as lonely as that of a fool on the hill, ranting to himself as everyone ignores him and gets on with their own lives. If you are not British, then go support your own head of state, if you are lucky enough to come from a country where anyone knows who they are.
