Hi there. I have a student struggling greatly with a lateral lisp "sh" sound. Do you have any suggestions that might help her? She is finding placement very difficult. She's also been working on the correct /s/ sound which has improved greatly.

These tips are great! Thank you! How would you target /sh/ and /ch/ that is caused by a lateral lisp due to an underbite?
@TheSpeechScoop4 жыл бұрын
Yonah Darrison jaw exercises may help- is there dental work going on currently or in the future? Google super duper oral motor exercises!
@TheSpeechScoop4 жыл бұрын
Yonah Darrison also - you’ll have to have extra lip strength! Try to exaggerate those SH / CH sounds in order to compensate for the underbite - for lateral lisp due to underbite, there’s really not a lot we can do without dental assistance; however, consider producing your /s/ sound like more of a soft “sh”, as many singers do this intentionally & it is considered a dialect/accent verses a speech error! Just food for thought! Hope this helps!

When I was in preK, my grandparents were told I needed speech therapy, but they moved that year to a small town that didn't have any of those programs. I've always struggled with my CH and SH sounds. I'm now 31 and just diagnosed with ADHD. I honestly forget in the middle of speaking how those two sounds differ. I feel a bit silly using since these since they are for little kids, but I'll give it a try.
@TheSpeechScoop3 жыл бұрын
Oh don’t worry at all you can definitely get it either and just using the placement cues! I have a CH sound video for adults on my list of videos to film so stay tuned! Lots of people have requested that, the way I am just remember that SH your tongue is pulled back and not touching the top of your mouth and CH your tongue explodes off the roof of your mouth! You can do it!

Hello! What type of lisp would a child possibly have if they pronounce sounds like ch as sh (ie chewy as shewy, or child as shild). Thank you!
@TheSpeechScoop2 жыл бұрын
Just a distortion! Just needs to correct the tongue & push it up to the roof of the mount & “explode off”- when “sh” is produced, the tongue is reflexed but not touching any other oral anatomy. Hope this helps!

I have a question. My child adds a "T" sound when trying to say the word shoe. She can say the two sounds perfect separately but when she blends them she adds a "T" sound. Is there a way to help her with this as many of the words and sounds she say wrong she adds a "T" sounds. Thanks
@TheSpeechScoop4 жыл бұрын
are the words that she says all involving the "sh" or "s" sounds? (if so, it would just mean its a patterned error called "stopping" where kiddos stop the airflow instead of continuing throughout the word. Try using an "H" sound to continue the airflow! for example: instead of "stoo" for shoe - try "shhh + who" and instead of "seep" for example, (where she would say "steep" you would model "sss - h -eep" to exaggerate the air flow and help it be continuous (because when kids add the /t/ sound its to stop it!) so try that modification and let me know how it goes! A visual of an "H" (write H on a post-it) and the hand cue to feel the hot air coming out of your mouth when using /h/ would also be helpful! check out the /s/ videos for the hand cue for /s/ and then combine with /h/ to keep both sounds in the word! Hope this helps!

@TheSpeechScoop3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Great question! So “ch” & “j” are the same sound - one is voice off “ch” and one is voice on “j” so you will just have her do the same thing with her voice on! You can tell if voice is on by touching your throat & feeling vocal cords “tickle” or vibrate! You can also do this trick with “p” and “b” / “s” and “z” and “k” and “g” all the same thing! :)

That shouldn’t impact this sound - possibly lip closure though so /m, p, b/ sounds

@@TheSpeechScoop BTW, his /m, p, b/ are great, but the sounds he is least confident about are - forgive me, I can't find the phonetic symbols - the s sound, the ch as in china, the sh as in shush (the tongue keeps touching that tooth) and the tz as in pizza.

@TheSpeechScoop4 жыл бұрын
Chitra Shukla try reading repetitive books like “polar bear, polar bear what do you _____” & target that word “see?” So let them fill it in but provide the tactile cueing like (run finger down arm for /s/ and then big smile & point to closed teeth for /e/ & exaggerate the word /sssseeee/ if they are at the word level, if at the phrase level, target 2 words together with cues, etc. once the child masters the word level/phrase level (80% or more correct 3 x’s - yay!!!) then change the target, so instead of letting them fill in the word “see” let them fill in other words! (& cue those as well!) remember repetition / muscle memory / oral-motor strength & coordination are what’s important with CAS! You can do it!! Let me know
