UPDATE I recently released my retrospective on the 3rd Birthday, and in that video, I give this game lots of credit for being really good. I still have issues with story stuff and level design, but since making this video and replaying 3rd bday, I've found a new appreciation for PE2. Please stop yelling at me, okay? Go watch that video.

From a gameplay standpoint, I always thought this game was fun as hell. From a storyline standpoint, I do have issues, although I think more time, thought and care could have helped. I'm not against there being some shadow organization that's artificially creating Mitochondria monsters through humans, people forget that it was a human scientist that helped caused Eve's awakening in the first game and create the perfect seed to impregnate her. Hell, my favorite element is Eve and the potential for an artificial recreation of the force that almost brought the end of all things in NYC. Where I think it falters is that the organization who does it feels like it belongs in an entirely different universe. The creatures they create are awesome, I have no problem with that, but the giant soldiers don't fit in with what was introduced in the first game. And then there's the main headquarters that's not even Resident Evil inspired, but feels far more Jurassic Park. They could have built up that Dr. Klamp from PE1 was just one figure in a group or even cult who felt the Mitochondria where the future and the saviors. Instead we have Kyle as the insider that offers nothing and the Golem #9 who's feels like a stock video game boss. I think the game just needed more time. The action is fun, the monsters are unique yet still disturbing, the desert town could have shifted horror tones from J-Horror to a more desert themed horror like Hills have Eyes or something and Eve is a great idea for the evolution of Aya's character. It's just they went a little off the rails with the concepts (no where near as bad as 3rd Birthday granted). Parasite Eve is a game that makes you think and wonder while having a good time, Parasite Eve 2 is a game that doesn't press you as much but is more fun.

Not quite sure if the counter-arguments are really "yelling", but there is a trend of when PE 2 was played. I never got a chance to play PE1 until years after PE2 and I only played PE2 during the tail end of me renting PS1 games and then again during my PSP days. I only really played PE1 right around when FF15 came out, which is when I grew tired of Japanese RPG story telling, particularly those that deal in melodrama, culture exclusively, or harkening to an ideal that really doesn't match with any other culture (ie Persona's focus on JHigh School rather than other countries similar growth in college). That and I started to love statistics in gaming more than straight-up storytelling. (Speaking of, I would love to play a game solely focused on data visualization. Using stats to tell a grander story. O man, I would love a story where the game's characters tell you one thing, but the numbers and actions happening around you suggesting another.) Anyway, my bias against JRPG storytelling hit an overall peak. PE1 included. It just wasn't what I had played with PE2. I liked the arcadey feel of PE2 and going back to JRPG was just too much for me. Of course, I know that PE1 is a JRGP in mechanics and not so much in story. I kinda compare games I irrationally don't like(or like less than I should) to food made with anise. Lots of great stuff is made with that spice(like Pho), but knowing that it is there triggers a stupid reaction where I think everything tastes like black licorice. PE1 is the same for me. Personally, if Square revisits PE1 and PE2, maybe we will get a FF7 RE treatment for PE1. I think it would be really cool to have the same kind of detail of FF7 in a NYC setting. I don't know what the mechanics would look like, but the biggest thing I liked about PE1 was digital tourism, in that you are in a messed-up NYC. PE2, maybe like RE2 Remake? I don't know. Until then, Im going to keep trying to play PE1. Whenever I get over how good Hades is....

Hey np, it's your point of view. : ) But as someone who never got to play PE1 ( because it wasn't released where I lived at the time ) And basically started the "series" with PE2, it is impossible for me to imagine that PE1 was better than 2 in any way! I found the story and setting super exciting, challenging and - come on just look how beautiful PE2 looks >_< PE 1 Aya just looks like a "3D anime character" - idea that didn't quite work out... PE 2 Aya on the other hand looks so pretty and skillfully / realistically designed! I wonder if my opinion were different if I started the series with PE1 but - as it stands, The Resident Evil Clone: Parasite 2 is my all-time favourite PE game ^^ ( After all I love RE and well made RE clones of the time in general ^^ Dino Crisis, Hard Edge... )

Who on earth ever said PE2 was a Resi rip off? I have never heard that. This game was damn fine a 9/10 in my book, in not one area did it feel like a Resident Evil game. Also, I accidentally stole this game from Toys R Us back in the day. I was about 7 or 8, my sister was about 14 or 15. So my sisters, cousins and I stopped by the Toys R Us and we explored a while. Finally, i made it to the game section and was looking to see what they had. There I spotted it on the top shelf and couldnt reach it, so this nice gentleman grabbed it for me. I saw my sister was leaving the store, but me being as young as I was simply thought that i could follow her out the store and then just return the game later. So i just ran clean out the store with the game firmly in my hand and shouted to my sister that I had finally found it. Mind you, this was when games came in those large plastic security cases, and the only way to get them out safely was the store clerks had to open them for you. So when i walked out, the security case was still on there and I happily showed my sister that I found it. Both my sisters and all of our cousins were shocked and told me to just keep walking. To which they then proceeded to tell me that I was gonna go to jail and they made fun of me. That didnt stop us from getting home and prying open that security case though lmao. Took us about an hour and a half to break that damn case open. Hell we used tools that kids werent allowed to use, but our parents werent home, so they never found out we were doing dangerous shit just to play a game. Good times man.

I'd be really interested to see someone create an game that uses animated pre-rendered backgrounds in order to create camera pans as you move through the environment. For example the camera could follow you down a corridor in a tracking shot and then as you round a corner or enter the room at the end of the corridor you have a more traditional fixed perspective. So long as you have the script information that was used for the background animation the character model could be rotated and scaled to maintain the illusion of a 3D environment. I suppose you would run into storage issues for all those frames of animato however if you're looking to recreate a grungy PS1-era aesthetic while not being limited by hardware you could compress the hell out of it to bring down the file size.

Parasite Eve 2 is an amazing game that is a must-play for any fan of the survival horror genre. One of the things that makes this game stand out is its incredible graphics and atmospheric environments. The game's visuals are absolutely stunning, from the detailed character designs to the eerie and atmospheric settings. The game takes place in the fictional desert town of Dryfield, which is overrun by grotesque monsters known as Golems. The town is abandoned and desolate, and the game's atmosphere is incredibly tense and unsettling. The game's lighting and sound design further contribute to the sense of unease, making for a truly immersive experience. The game's graphics are also very impressive, with detailed character models and animations. The game's creatures are particularly noteworthy, as they are incredibly grotesque and terrifying. The game's cutscenes are also very well done, and they add to the story's emotional impact. The game's story is also worth mentioning, it's a science fiction story that is well written and thought-provoking, it has a good balance of horror and mystery. The protagonist Aya Brea, is a special agent with unique abilities that makes the gameplay experience more interesting. In short, Parasite Eve 2 is an incredible game that offers an unforgettable experience, with its stunning graphics, atmospheric environments, and a well-written story. It's a game that any fan of survival horror should not miss out on.

Parasite Eve II feels like a RE game because some of the ex CAPCOM employee worked on it, notably Satoru Nishikawa, which worked on RE 1 and 2 backgrounds, becoming the Art Director on PE II. This can also be seen in the change of 3D graphics tools, with the first PE, SQUARE, used Nichimen N-World ( W O R L D, no word, lol) and Alias PowerAnimator, with PE II they switched to SOFTIMAGE|3D, which is what CAPCOM used at the time, giving PE II that mental ray look. I totally agree about the story, I think the best part of the game is in the beginning, the desert is still OK, but the laboratory has a lazy design and the enemies are there just to slow you down, since it's a very small area, making it very quick to complete otherwise. As for the music, I didn't know how it really sounded until I replayed PE II with headphones, some years ago, most of the tunes are forgettable, the only passable one (if you exclude the original rearrangements) is "Watch Out!", and the composer (another ex CAPCOM employee) was hired for his work on RE2! That said, PE II is one of my favourite games, it has a incredible replayability value, with all the weapons and magic spells you can get. Every time you can use different strategies to beat monsters and bosses.

The end of the video reminded me that one of my favorite series died sad and lonely on a terribly fancy boat that was the PSP. Thank you for the video, I really enjoyed Parasite Eve 2 back when I played it when it first came out but I could never shake the feeling the feeling that it was kind of, eh. At least I can still cherish the memories of playing the first one, reading the novel Parasite Eve was based on, and the glorious fun of New Game +ing my way through with a friggin M249 SAW. Good times.

Kinda weird how this was a spin off promoted to Sequel like RE3 and around the same time, only that game felt like a sequel in terms of both gameplay and story where this looks very different. (Also that part at the end leading up to Third Birthday was pretty funny.)
@LakrimaProject5 жыл бұрын
This 'it was ment to be a spin-off' thinking is bit dumb. So where is that real PE2? There is none, also it was not like Aya was foced in that game in last minute. From all the game development maybe only 10% at the begining it was ment to be a spin-off and rest 90% was ment to be a sequel. As for Resident Evil 3 it is another fake rumor. Both games RE3 AND RE:CV ware made as a sequel to RE2. Capcom later decided which is which.

Here's a little bit of Parasite Eve trivia, it turns out that Aya has stopped aging since the events PE1. You can find this out after gaining access to motel room 6. If Aya looks at her reflection in the motel room's bathroom mirror you get this bit internal monologue: "here's looking at you, kid. I look like I'm in my early 20's... It's nice. But, there is a reason. It's what my mitochondria wants. A youthful host is advantageous. I saw this movie about a medieval Knight that lived in to this century. I don't want that. I'll be happy to live just one, normal life."

If you look at PE2 as a game that is setting up the story for a sequel, everything makes perfect sense. The cliffhanger with Madigan. The unexplained bit about your boss and other MIST operatives being arrested for leaking info to the "shadow organization". Jodi and Rupert on their quest to make NMCs and MIST public or whatever. The bit about Maeda and Pierce preparing society for a future which will have more people with neo-mitochondria and super powers. The fact that the characters from the previous game got almost no screen time. The fact that they didn't even care to explain who the actual villain of PE2 is, you just find their hideout with the doors wide open and have to kill runaway monsters during the whole game. If you imagine that their original plan was to produce a sequel right after PE2, then PE2 is a kickass game, because, besides the story, everything else in it is very well done. However, they only released a new PE game 10 years later and chose to ignore all the cliffhangers from PE2. That's why PE2 is such a confusing game.

It is worth nothing that the director and writer for Parasite Eve 2 was Kenichi Iwao, the main scenario writer for the original Resident Evil game (the man who essentially thought up the whole plot, since Mikami didn't even want the game to have a story): taking this into consideration, it's not surprising that PE2 feels a lot like RE games. I wouldn't be surprised if Square hired Iwao specifically because of his work on RE1.

As someone who finally finished the main game with the best ending about a year or two ago, just shortly after finishing the post game of the first one, I love this game despite its faults. There is a lot to love with the game if you approach it with a level of patience. Aya’s writing overall is one of the best parts of it, and I personally found the more combat focused survival horror elements to be rather fun and engaging. The story isn’t great, but I found it tolerable, if not a little bit tongue-in-cheek. I mean you literally go into a secret lab inside a secret lab that’s inside another secret lab at one point. And by the end of it, I was really looking forward to seeing how the world at large would go on with the growing awareness of the NMCs. Especially since there is a little bonus epilogue about Maeda if you grabbed the science journal early on, which revealed more people were popping up in the world with latent abilities similar to that of Aya’s. It’s all just a crying shame that the next game just… threw all of that out, and sequel baited so hard that it even managed to make its already offensive ending even more unsatisfying.

Parasite eve 2 is a masterpiece. You criticized it being similar to resident evil although I ifind that is a good thing because I love RE. you have to know it's not a resident evil clone, but it's a genre called survivor horror and PE2 has it's unique identity inside this genre. If you are a Japanese RPG fan that doesn't mean PE2 is bad. It's just not designed for you. There are many people love PE2 over PE1.

I still have my copy of this that I bought the day it came out. I remember when FFVII it seemed impossible that a game could look that good, but then P.E. I and especially this game, really upped the cinematic feel of games. It may be more R.E. like but it pushed the envelope in terms of graphics and presentation much more than R.E .I and II IMHO.

This game's atmosphere was so amazing. The soundtrack is at the REmake level. I think the conflict people have with this title is the same they have with RE4 compare to the previous games. Both are amazing but of a different genre. I personally love both PE.

How is Parasite Eve 2 a disappointing sequel??? 😒 I honestly don't understand why some people doesn't like Parasite Eve 2. It still has an RPG element, y'know? It just doesn't have the garbage ATB system that the first game has. I'm not really a fan of the first game's battle system, because I prefer Parasite Eve 2 more. I don't have to wait for an ATB gauge to be completely filled, to shoot at my enemies, and do magic. Parasite Eve 2 is a masterpiece IMO. Idc if you disagree. It was one of those games that defined my childhood, and it will always have a special place in my heart. Parasite Eve 1 was ok, but Parasite Eve 2 was the one that got me to PE series Additional note: I find Parasite Eve 2 more challenging and fun, than Parasite Eve 1 that's why I loved it more. That's the best part to survival horror game, just like RE
