This is the same for me. So I suppose because it was my first one, I find myself not disliking it as much as Parasite Eve fans might. It's like Resident Evil games. I start on 5 and thus had a great time with it. Yet RE vets disliked it because it was so action packed and less survival horror compared to what came before. But since I start one 5 I love the action AND the survival horror. Have yet to play 7/8 so I don't have strong opinions on 8. Anyways back to Parasite Eve. I'm sure I'll love the first 2 almost as much as I enjoyed the 3rd vs a PE vet.

The game was sequal to the book and He didn't want anymore adaptations after PE2 so square had to do a spin off much like what you described with little to no connections to the pe1 and 2 apart from the characters. Idk man I used to be into trophy hunting well still am to a extent but couldn't finish at least yet anyway 7 remake. Idk playing thru it it feels boring especially if you try to get almost everything the first playthrough. Emulating parasite eve and xenogears on my Android phone and I'm having more fun emulating classic games more than my PS4 or switch that are basically sitting now (although I did try to get back into God of war 2018 which also bores the hell out of me)

"with adult themes" is an instant red flag for every game in development. P.E. 1&2 were entirely adult, they both handled several adult themes and established fully grown characters in interesting ways. every time a developer says that, the game is almost universally guaranteed to be trash.

Take Obsidian's "Pillar's of Eternity 2" for example. The first game was well written and interesting, though definitely not perfect. The second game's writers proclaimes the story would be more "mature" yet what this boiled down to in the end was a large number of NPCs randomly being horny for the PC, regardless of the PC's gender. The conflation of mature themes with sexual themes is really annoying, and way too prevalent across all media

As someone who aspires to one day write stories that people can enjoy, it always pisses me off when things like this and Other M get made that just destroy good characters and worlds. I'm sorry that something like this happened to a series you held in such high regard. Maybe some day we'll get a team that loved the first two enough and reboot the series or make a true 3rd installment that doesn't just take a dump on everything that came before? Been a fan of your videos since your brilliant Death Stranding review but first time commenting! Played Parasite Eve when it first came out and loved it so much - gun RPG mechanics, New York setting and characters / survival horror mash-up all really got me. Been on a nostalgia trip and decided to revisit series and started by buying 3rd Birthday without knowing too much about it…and horrified at what it’s turned out to be. Will definitely revisit PE1 and hopefully pick up Haunting Ground after watching your vids. Really enjoyed all your Parasite Eve retrospects, great videos.

I can honestly say after watching your review in its entirety, that I'm happy I skipped ever picking up this game. Some of my fondest memories of my PS1 are with PE and PE2, I can even remember getting PE2 on Christmas with its strat guide because they were sold as a combo at Sam's Club. This game has one of the worst send-offs to the main character in gaming, and there are a lot of horrific character send-offs just in JRPGs as a genre. My Parasite Eve ends with a visit to the museum, and that dork Kyle smiling because he's not dead. Oh, and the dog's alive, always.

OMG what did they do to Maeda! I'm irrationally upset about this. I stumbled across Parasite Eve on PS1 from a friend's yard sale. The first game was the most pleasant surprise of an RPG when I popped it in...but I'm definitely glad I didn't pursue any kind of payoff with the trilogy, yeech!

@blackrave404 Sure, in some cases that could be justified, but again, Aya isn't even in her own body. She's in somebody else's at nearly all times. Her own clothes should be fine. As for superman and supergirl, yeah, they should... but if I recall correctly, the reason they don't is because their invulnerability actually includes a thin force field around their body, nearly skintight, that protects their tight outfits as well as their bodies.

@@wadespencer3623 Superman’s costume (the main one anyway) is usually said to have been made out of the special, extremely durable kryptonian fabric used to swaddle him as a baby when he was put in the capsule thing that sent to Earth. It has gotten torn and damaged on a few occasions but as far as I remember that usually only happens when he’s fighting a really strong foe like Doomsday. I assume it’s likely similar for Super Girl and the other kryptonian characters.

I ran into a precarious situation with this game. Both me and my older sister are HUGE RPG fans and big fans of the Parasite Eve franchise. We both got the game at about the same time, but I unfortunately had a big back log at the the time and didn’t get around to playing it right away. By the time I was going to play it, my older sister reached out to me and recommended that I don’t. She essentially said that it was a bastardization of PE and that I will absolutely hate it. Let’s just say my sister and I see VERY eye-to-eye on a lot of things, so I trusted her judgment. To this very day, it just sits on my gaming shelf and I’ve never even opened it. After seeing this review, I am certainly understanding why my sister told me not to play it. I would absolutely hate this. I don’t even know why they had to “make Aya Brea more sexy.” She was already pretty damn sexy from the first two games. The fact that they either completely discarded past characters or performed thorough character assassinations on them is incredibly disappointing. I essentially just pretend the third game doesn’t exist. I cannot let myself believe that the creators of this game killed it off in such a travesty.

This game basically erases 99% of itself from canon with its ending. With Bohr gone the SWAT team never arrives to Massacre the attendants at the wedding. The Twisted never appear. And, there is a secret ending (4th birthday) that heavily implies that Aya (her consciousness) may still be alive.

I was thinking why don't they just make another game where she is reborn through fragments of memory left within some mitochondria cells. It would make a great sequel and I can think of a lot of ways where she can come back, either as a semi-final boss that turns good again to stop the bigger threat or as a surprise rebirth just in the nick of time to stop the player getting killed by the final boss. It literally writes itself!

The Third Birthday is such an interesting game to me. Amazingly, growing up in a fairly anti-video game family means I didn't actually have a console of any sort until I was an adult. My first 'console' was the PSP, and one of the first games I ever played was The Third Birthday. I have, and always HAVE had a soft spot in my heart for The Third Birthday. I didn't even know it was a sequel, I just thought it was a confusing story. It wasn't until almost 8 years after I played it that I was finally able to play Parasite Eve 1 and 2. And with hindsight, I completely understand the love for them, and why people thought The Third Birthday was so awful. Even still, there's a spot in my heart for this goofy, twisted game that honestly isn't that great. But I also know I'm really, really a standalone anomaly here.

If they wanted a weaker protag, they should have chosen EVE legitimately... no twist. She's relatively unskilled (set this slider wherever you want for a different story) but let her borrow power/skill from AYA. Hell, let there be two protagonists and just switch between them. That makes for some fun level design.

What I loved about PE1 was that it was a normal city, starting with Aya being a regular dude going to a play with her date, and then rats start to turn into monsters in front of her and we unravel the story behind how a completely normal setting got so insane. I feel like they completely forgot what made the first game so cool.

Parasite Eve 2 did something similar with the small town of Dryfield but it didn't have as much impact as seeing the disaster start from the beginning. 2 also suffered from not having a central villain like 1 did. Golem there just...didn't fit the bill. He always just felt like a lackey.

For example : in 1 we had to put Sheeva down even though she was a good dog before the mutation and we saw 2 human tragedies tolling into the thousands: the play at the Carnegie Hall and then the play attempt at Central Park. The betrayal that those influenced by “eve” could had been set up greater. I don’t think we got a proper cut scene of one of the bad endings in 2 involving Kyle. And maybe more backstory on golem no.9 and why the facility existed in the first place.

So it goes from a game about body horror, where only a single person is able to prevent themselves from bursting into fire or mutating into a monster because some crazy opera singer has a strong connection to THE POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL then you do, to existential horror where some woman from the future can randomly take over your body, using it as weapon against said monsters. God does it suck to be a random person in that world.

I just like how you mentioned that as a little girl you found strength in this game and connected with Aya because that was what happened with me as well. I had a dysfunctional family and all I had through these years were my games, specifically the first game I've ever owned myself, PE II (Yes, I played the first one after). And since my first language isn't English and it heavily relies on text/puzzles, and my lack of connection to the internet then, as a kid I played this game for years and years and years, hoping to solve things, and I really didn't want it to end. I wrote down all dialogues and translated them one by one. I draw the maps. I bought OST, listened to it over and over. I analyzed the characters. My connection to this game and Aya is something I cannot describe.That's why 20 years later, I still come back to it. And I will keep coming back 20 years later. I was on Gamespot forums back then, and Neoseeker before that, primaleyes forum and countless others, now on discord. Wherever Aya is, I'll be there. It's something I cannot let go and I now know I don't have to. So yeah, I understand what you mean. Thank you for this video.
