I have nothing but respect for the Thespians. Or at least the ones who stayed behind and died with the Spartans at Thermopylae. They had a chance to leave and live another day and yet they chose to stay.
@AncientHistoryGuy Жыл бұрын
That was also all of their military capabilities. Thespiae got practically wiped off the face of the map for a few years by the Persians in the aftermath

Thespis was just a town. Those 700 Thespians that stayed behind with the Spartans were nearly the 50% of their fighting-age-able-to-fight men. We talk about a sacrifice here. Thespians were men of honour. Unlike the Thebans.

two years later, Thebai destroyed Thespia. Like Argos destroying Mykene. Mykene had send 80 Hoblites into the battle of Plataia. All in all they had perhaps a fighting force of 200 men.

Due to its 8 shape we usually call the aspises used by hoplite like Thespians, "Beotian" because it generally appears in coins and other iconography from that erea :) while black might not have been their color, their moon theme might have come with dark blue or purple colors which is equally impressive.

One small detail about hoplon shields: often only the rim of the shield was covered in metal. the reason it's so often stated that the whole shield was covered is because the metal vovered shields have been better preserved (for obvious reasons), than the ones without. another nitpick I have is that, although this video was great and I enjoyed it, I would've liked to see you go deeper into the specifics of what we know of the thespians, because a large portion of your video was dedicated to their arms and armor, which were so homogenous for many city states in ancient greece, that talking abou them offers very little new information

Yeah I think that started from troy taking the boetiean shield for Achilles and then it just became part of Achilles iconic look.

Pretty good stuff, here. I would add that at various times some hoplites had long leather strips hanging from the bottom of their shields and meant to protect their legs....due to this, Sparta for a time experimented with going without the bronze greaves... And there is some confusion as to how the Greeks actually fought. If tight hoplite formations were meant to throw their weight, literally, into the battle...then why the use of shields or even two headed spears?
@willbass2869 Жыл бұрын
You forgot the other use of a hoplon... " *Come back with your shield - or on it* " (Plutarch, Mor.241) was supposed to be the parting cry of mothers to their sons."

The Corinthian Helmet wad mostly used at 6th century BC and less at 5th century BC. Not at all at 4th century.
wait. Encyclopedia britannica still calls it the hoplon?
@AncientHistoryGuy Жыл бұрын
Basically all hoplons are aspis's but not all aspis's are hoplons. From what I've research this year it's a grip thing that distinguishes the different varieties. Argive aspis used basically a rope running around the entire rim, whilst hoplons had a solid handle, the Boeotian hoplons as used by the thespians had an actual handle so hence the hoplons classification. You notice that a lot of the shields used in Italy by the Greeks were of the Argive aspis variety due to there being less of a focus on heavy blocks of spearmen and more on quick mobile warfare, whilst in Greece it's heavy blocks of spearmen really until the Macedonians/thessalonians came on in with cavalry.
