One of my most favorite moments in gaming came from TW:Arena. I was playing as Scipio Afrikaans and was going 3 heavy cavalry. Everyone snapped up the most forward deployment positions and I had to deal with a rear position. I immediately surged forward trying to scout out the field and take a watchtower on the hill in the center of the map. I saw the flag raising through the fog of war and I was so very close to reaching it. I dived in with everything not even knowing what was on the hill. To my absolute delight, I ran over 5 units of archers and only stopped and turned back because one of the two archer commanders that were trying to grab the hill early had brought a heavy spear unit as well. Thankfully, they were heavy and I just ran away from them. I got so much salt from that because in the first 2 minutes I alone had just knocked out 2 commanders on my own. I went into the replay to try to see what they saw. From their perspective, the flag didn't even raise all the way. To their eyes, they just saw a massive horde of cavalry YOLO charging through the fog of war.

Local area network games often broke matchmaking services because matchmaking services rely on high demand to keep match variety and player skill ranges as wide as possible. Towards the beginning of matchmaking services, you could tell developers were trying to make it work - but when enough people create alternative experiences that it's impossible to quick-match into a vanilla game nobody was allowed to change the rules of, quick-match success was abysmal. You'd often find yourself either unable to find a match, find a match that's still modified as a games last resort to connecting you, or just repeatedly reconnect you to one of a small handful of "valid" matches.

Maybe if a big enough revival happens the large portion of hackers on PC lobbies, while the actual number may go up (because for some reason this game has next to no security) active incidents will relatively go down as more players come in and don't mod the game. There is a game that was around back in the early 2000s until about 2010 called Wish Realm. It had a very unique style, being a 2D MMO that worked on (what is effectively) a tile grid. Some monsters had aggro ranges based on how close or far you were, if you got unlucky you could accidentally chain aggro the entire map and they would teleport onto you and instantly kill you, after you got to the max level you sold your additional experience to gain stats, you required a certain amount of experience sold into stat to enter higher tier endgame maps, and there were hidden passages that lead to secret areas/bosses. After a certain level of exp sold, because the optimal strategy was to get more damage, you would die if any monster hit you, so there was a lot of focus on Priests, since they could revive, and being able to one shot enemies before they one shot you. There was a lot of skill involved in playing the game well, as you had to know how to kite enemies and how to weave in and out on their attack range without getting hit. When you watched a skilled Knave or Mystic play and decimate group after group of mobs it was like watching a painter paint their masterpiece. Especially for Mystics, since their targeting was normally done quickly between movement. Speaking of targeting, when a spellcaster used a spell it brought up a targeting box that the player had to manually move onto the monster in their camera range. They then had to use arrow keys to scroll through the monsters in order to select their target then hit enter to use the spell. I loved that game so much. I spent so many hours on it. Back in the day I was even one of the highest exp sold players in the game (ranking as high as 3rd highest sold for Mystic). But the game died. I heard that someone had the files to build a private server at some point, but after a lot of digging over many years I haven't been able to find any method to do so. :(

Each character had abilities that could be upgraded during a match, so the better you do, the more you snowball. Each side had a giant god or monster that the other team was trying to defeat. It was pretty fun and just when it was starting to pick up steam, the developer announced they were shutting it down. That was the most emotional thing I've ever watched. I'm both devastated by your loss and overjoyed that you got to relive those amazing moments. 😢 ❤ 😍

This game was actually one of my favorites. I remember playing in the beta. It was such a great idea. Sad to hear it's finally gone it's a shame
