Tino pai e hoa! This is so well presented. Thank you! Like many New Zealanders I only had a vague memory of the song by Herbs and hadn't really taken it in. This is a piece of history that must be preserved! Although I'm of British descent I would much rather commemorate Parihaka on 5th November!

Im an expat Kiwi with a degree in NZ history (grad 1960s) and we NEVER HEARD A THING ABOUT THIS! I have been shocked and appalled as I have read about it. Thank you for this presentation which is a great summary. Glad Kiwi kids are hearing about it in school today.

One year I was hitching my way home to Parehaka from Palmerston North.. it was on January 2nd and people mostly had full cars. I'm a Yank and Anglo European and I was wearing a bloody Stetson and walking in boots. I had a hoodie on from a friend it said something in Maori on the pocket.. Anyway.. it was a little bit of a way but it was broken up into about five different rides. The first person to pick me up was a Scotsman and had a huge Mercedes S Class in all black.. So we did introductions, I complimented his taste in cars, he mentioned being a fifth generation colonist with great pride.. So I asked him, "What's it feel like living on stolen land?" The last ride was much better.. c couple three Māori who freaked out that I was living where I was living, so I took out my pipe and told them the tale of The Scottish Pakeha Farmer and the Switched on Social Worker I'm going to have to write it down one day.

Im an NZer or european decent but my family came to NZ before the treaty so i am about as Kiwi as a whitey can get. When I found about about Parihaka about 20years ago i straight away started telling anyone that would listen to me that we really should start remembering this horrific event. I firmly believe that we should replace Guy Fawkes for a Parihaka rememberance day... Remember remember the 5th of November.

Great video, well done. However, I think you'll find that the "OG of turning the other cheek" was actually the guy who coined the phrase "turn the other cheek" about 2000 years ago...
@bhudson39
@bhudson39 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, great video. Turn the other cheek was definately Christian, though tohunga teaching peacemaking definately pre dated the arrival of Christians in NZ. Their pacifism was the result of these blended philosophies.

That’s right. Rongo (god of peace) had all of those attributes. Te Whiti and Tohu ultimately came around to preaching the synergies of the biblical stories with their own traditional stories and beliefs.

i would like to add my people Ngati Hineuru were also victim to raupatu, starvation, and imprisonment for NO reasons. They were attacked with no provacation at Oamuru and Petane in 1886 in the guise of suppressing rebellion that did not occur. They were transported to the Chathams for over 2 years and held without trial. By 1869 they nearly extinguished our iwi. opinion- I believe the settlers wanted to create a passage between the east and west coast of NZ and didn't care what it took to make it happen!

Yeah - this is a terrible chapter in our nation's history! It should definitely be taught in our schools. And I also totally agree - Nov. 5th should be commemorating these two great leaders and all of the many men and women who were involved at Parihaka, not some British guy who tried to blow up parliament.

Actually John Bryce did not kill a couple of Maori boys at Handleys woolshed nor, so far and the records show, was there widesread "outrages" against women. Nonetheless, the situation leading up to and surrounding Parihaka was despicable. The fact that Waimate Maori did not take part in the war resulting from the sham sale of the Waitara block simply exacerbates what is one of the most shamefully episodes in the history of this country. Even the concept of land confiscation as reprisal for rebellion is quite shonky. The treatment of the ploughmen would, these days, see the colonial government of NZ up before the international Court in the Hague. The fact of mass slaughter and cannibalism by Maori against Maori in pre-European days does not in any way excuse this outrageous behavior by the colonialists, John Bryce among them. Also, lets just remember that the occupation of Parihaka was assisted by Kupapa Maori from elsewhere in the North Island.
