I used to paint figures some 25 years ago, and we always primed white. I remember when people first started recommending priming black, and when colored primers started becoming available. I personally only prime black if im painting predominantly metal or black, otherwise I will prime white or my base color.
@thestateofplay20235 ай бұрын
And you make perfect sense with that approach. 👍🏼
@ge271923 күн бұрын
Same, but then I only ever collected 40k, and in my head it always made more sense to me that armour of any kind would be best coated black first. And so my style of painting always sort of adapted the 'proper' method in the direction of having more black areas and generally darker colours. I think the only things I never primed black were my tzeench and nurgle daemons. The bright pink, blue, and green ones. But I did for khorn ones because red looks better over black. Edit. Just thought about it, and at one point I did use red primer on khorn bazzerkers.
@wigxu4 ай бұрын
I normally decide on the colour of primer based on the tone of colour I want. Example; bright red, prime white, mid red prime grey, dark red prime black. The colour theory in this video is real brainfood though and I love the thought of primer being "the first layer of colour". Great vid.

Just as a major note, there is still a good use for a black prime. If you're going to be using a lot of true metallic paints, black works really well for that. A lot of heavily armored figures or vehicles being major ones there. Most of my current major projects are more of just a grey primer there because it works well for different things tied into it, and works decently with a mix of metals and non-metals for aimed results.

Top notch video. Lacquer toxicity, speckly rattlecan zenithals, black spray being the wrong choice for most colours are all things people need to hear. The one thing I'm dying for a good video on is primer durability. Consensus seems to be airbrush primer is far less durable than rattlecan and lacquers so the convenience doesn't feel like a good trade for gaming pieces. Are the molotow acrylics special in any way that makes them suitable as priming? The airbrush primers tend to be acrylic-polyurethane mixes (which assume makes them more hard-wearing) rather than just pure acrylic.
@thestateofplay20235 ай бұрын
You don’t need primer. Primer is a myth. I’ve got unprimed models from 38 years ago with no varnish that look the same today as they did when I was 10. Most modern acrylic is tough enough to just stay where you put it. Molotow are graffiti acrylics. Designed to work on walls outdoors in all weather.

This is one of those things that the fine scale modelers do well and that the miniature gaming world could learn from. I was a fine scale modeler long before I got into wargaming and I’ve always considered primer color before painting my little dudes because of that. Like the video mentioned, I too always just thought it was a lazy aspect of miniature painters wanting to get armies on the table as fast as they can. I’m now wondering if it is a lack of awareness of such techniques. I often see miniature painters “discover” something like it is some brand new technique that never existed. I’m looking at you SlapChop enjoyers. I’d encourage wargamers to explore fine scale modeler channels and even the model railroader channels. You can learn a lot from those folks and even learn techniques that they have been doing for decades. Techniques that should have been a thing long ago in this hobby.
@thestateofplay20235 ай бұрын
I, like you, started as a scale modeller back in the 80s so brought much of the concepts over. I think miniature painters got used to quick drying acrylics. There’s are a few things I didn’t continue as we scale modellers don’t tend to touch a model after it’s finished so anything that could rub off got dropped.

Great tips! Question: with the molotow one4all refills, they are going to lay down as base coats not really Prime layers, correct? They are all functioning as pre-thinned acrylic which won’t bond to the plastic without actual prime paint sprayed on first? So essentially, you would still need to rattle-can everything white prime, then get to the malatow range of acrylic refills to choose my shadow colours and layer up the colour-wheel for highlights from there.. correct?
@thestateofplay20235 ай бұрын
Nope. The molotow is the prime layer. This whole “bond to the plastic” thing is a myth. Acrylic miniature paint is a plastic. When dry it forms more than enough grip for subsequent paint layers. Molotow is a graffiti paint. Do graffiti artists prime a wall before they paint? And when finished, does it rub off?

The acetone contained in plastic primer like Citadel (or spray like Molotow Premium) is clearly an aid to bind with the plastic as it microscopically "melt" with the surface, but the molotow ONE4ALL is an water based acrylic paint, it will not have a bad adhesion but not perfect for priming, especially if you play with your mini (for expo only it have a good enough adhesion). Paint it on a empty sprue, let it dry and try to scratch it off with your nail, you will see the difference by yourself 😉

@thestateofplay20234 ай бұрын
Yeah it’s weird that a simple lock of a colour wheel in place can change colour progression. I “lock” yellow at the top if zenithaling up to white. But often lock a shadow at the bottom. Or a different colour at the top depending on what I’m going for.

Do you have a color palette tool you use to choose your colors? I really like the priming in multiple colors idea but im just not following some of the jumps you are making when you say “okay now jump across the color wheel so blorgnarg can contrast with fugazi”. Especially the green/purple connection.
@thestateofplay20234 ай бұрын
Let’s see. Opposite colours on a colour wheel are complimentary. They’ll work together and look mice. So using purple as a shadow for green skin will work. This will work with most opposites on a colour wheel however sometimes spraying one on top of the other is too much of a colour jump to look right. So you’d use intermediate colours to get there. I.e. working around the colour wheel. Now you could use every single colour to get there, but that’s a rainbow overkill so you can “jump” to get the effect you want.

Hi. Well, the title says everything. I have 2 questions. Maybe one and share an experimentation I did and maybe have your opinion on it. First, we always spray zenithal to highlight, but why not spray dark from above on a lighter primer? Then I wanted to share this. I tried something starting with the 3 primary colors. I considered that blue is the shadow, red is the "mid light" and yellow the most vibrant light. So, on a white primer I sprayed blue from above, red at a 60 to 120° angle and yellow in zenithal. Then I painted on it with diluted paints. The result was very interesting. What do you think about it?
@thestateofplay20235 ай бұрын
Yes, in the video I reverse zenithalled the Direwolves. White then black from above. Didn’t work so well with rattlecans so I went back to airbrush. I think anyway of getting colour on a model is better than no colours at all. 👍🏼
