Best primer for me? Krylon military flat black. I actually have done two armies with alternating base coats of black and engine grey, and the other with krylon mil black, silver, and brown for rust. Highlight with accent colors, dark washes for filling recesses. 3 color standard achieved, and GW can go 🍆💢 itself😅 Thanks for the video, Chap!

So 2 things as dar as what i learned from long ago and recently: 1. Choice of base color does matter. If you use black, then put something other than black on it, it will darken it. Use white and it will lighten it. Red and it will change the color a bit. 2. Unless the base coat is the exact color you want and you wont be painting over the whole thing. Pick a base coat different than the finish color so you can make sure you hit everything. Me, i got a bunch of stormtroopes to paint, i will be using a off white with a slight blue paint after base coat, so im making my base coat a light blue. Its close to what im painting next while being different to know that i will get everything when im done.

I watched the video multiple times from a miniature painters-noob perspective (since i just started this). You mix up inks, to get different colors of inks. And you talk about adding the ink to a medium to make? It looks more like a wash to me but maybe i missed something? Or maybe it is paint that is suitable for an airbrush? But it looks far thinner then my diluted acrylics(?). Can this method be used to make like a replacement for my acrylic paints? If so, how do i make a acrylic paint like a Vellejo Model Color or Army Painter Warpaints Fanatic? I dont own a airbrush yet so i do pretty much everything except the primer with a brush.
@thestateofplay20233 күн бұрын
Well, good question. Ink is ink and paint is paint. The two are used for different things. Ink is highly pigmented but often more transparent so you can thicken it to be like paint with gesso or liquithick but it’ll need more coats as it’ll never be like paint. Ink is better for airbrush or transparent effects similar to contrast paints.

This video is perfect, and I've learned so much from it. Being able to create my own colors from just 5 bases is amazing! I have a question: what proportion of speed paint medium should I mix with my inks to achieve a similar effect? And is there a homemade formula for speed paint medium? I'm not sure if you've answered these questions in the video because my English listening skills are not very good. Thank you very much! You've earned a subscriber, and I will continue to delve into your videos
@thestateofplay20237 күн бұрын
There’s no exact mix for speedpaint medium. It will basically come down to taste. I often do 50/50 then just add more coats for lighter colours and darker is often 66/33 (2 drops medium to 1 ink).

I swear, your channel is WAY better than the views/subs would make it seem. Your videos are clinically shot/edited, your text is always borderline hilarious and fantastically presented and the content itself is above par almost all the time. Only your audio sucks big time which is a sad oversight in my eyes, even if your not an audio guy you could at least try to lob it at about the same really high level as the visual side. That said - you are one of the top interest channels on YT, thank you for your work!

Really useful video, enjoying the channel! Question about priming with Molotow One4All with an airbrush- do you add anything to the mix or just straight out of the bottle? @thestateofplay202310 күн бұрын
I spray them straight out of the bottle. And honestly I’ve not had any issues with durability. I had heard of issues with board game minis as they tend to need cleaned with soapy water to remove mould release agent. But on resin or GW plastic, it “should” be fine.

I am struggling to understand the multicolour colour choices, unfortunately. I watched your colour theory video and understood that just fine. Can someone please explain to me how the colours were chosen in these cases? I would personally really like to use the multicolour slapchop method.
@thestateofplay202311 күн бұрын
Choose the main colour of you model. Find it on a colour wheel. Go to the opposite side of the wheel. That’s your primer colour. Then work back around the wheel picking a few colours to drybrush on that wouldn’t create a new colour if you painted a speedpaint over it. Best way to figure this out is to do a test on another object, any object, doesn’t need to be a mini. So for a green orc you go purple, pink, yellow, then maybe white - then paint on a green speedpaint. The purple becomes a shadow, the pink, yellow and white when painted over with green become varying shades of green that create shadow and contrast. But none of these with green over them turn into a totally different colour like blue.

@1:00 - for all the good that comes along with printing... the printed models honestly look like shite compared to a cast plastic one... I'm not trying to save money at the expense of aesthetics.

There are no3D printed models featured in this video…? But I might suggest that you may be using the wrong 3d printer or using one wrong if you think they look that bad. I used to agree. Then I got a Reflex RS printer and these models look amazing with no learning curve.
@Ericka-kl4hb12 күн бұрын
@thestateofplay2023 the printer genuinely doesn't matter; it's the STL files and the supports needed for the print... Printed minis don't have the horrid layered look that they used to... but they still lack the fine details of a cast model. It just is what it is... If you had a perfect STL for a 1-to-1 print, at scale, you'd have already made a video for the views... They don't exist. They are "good enough" for printer hobbyists... but you can tell a printed mini vs a cast one instantly if they are on a table together...

Why not just distilled water, typically that's what I use to thin the paint for brushing? Also I typically thin at different rates when brushing, depends on material, color, surface shape, etc. Once you add water for pouring, you lose the ability to thin or thicken beyond that point.
@thestateofplay202312 күн бұрын
I used to use distilled water. But it has no shelf life. After a few years your paint dries in the dropper when it inevitably separates. Add water for thinning sure as you’re about to immediately use the paint. But adding water to transfer is a sure fire way of killing the long lifespan you wanted by transferring to droppers in the first place. However if you use up all you paint quickly. Then ignore me and use water. 👍🏼
@lorimcquinn396612 күн бұрын

@@thestateofplay2023 I'm not hugely committed to Citadel at this time, have perhaps (15) different base colors. While I like their pigments, very low odor and ASTM non-toxic labeling, will the Airbrush medium leave the paint in this state or convert to a toxic product?

Ideal for Necromunda - also my Hangar deck for games - so put the walls to the edges - then put down an aircraft or two as cover, then crates, ammo, trolleys, fuel barrels loads of cover. Also - I bought 1 spare tile off ebay cut it in ragged half - then one side I cut again - so 1/2 half and 2 x quarter tiles - made transition tiles with spackle, filler etc so can be used on a normal board and it looks like shanty town in a desert, or crashed ship or whatever. I have a small house so a 3ft x4ft board is still fun and useful - but I can have a beer a small patrol 1000pt game / or kill team.
