Hey Steve great clips ... quick question, was there a reason you used the 3528 smd led over the 5050? also does the remote control system your using use infrared or can it work without pointing at the boxes? ... cheers
@TheSteveBidwell8 жыл бұрын
Hey Finton, the 5050's were not widely available when I made these a couple years back. If I were doing them today I'd definitely use the brighter 5050's and just space them out a bit more inside the box. Thanks for your question and good luck if you decide to make your own... mine are still going strong and everyone who visits my theater room comments on how much they like the poster.

I see where someone on Etsy is using my design with the snap frame and selling them for $395. If you shop wisely and use stuff you may have on hand there isn't any reason you can't do this project for $100 or less. Good luck.

They look very nice!! Congrats. Is there a way to make a scrolling light box. For example one frame that can scroll different posters perhaps on a timer or by remote, and also be backlit (with the dimmer would be cool)?
@TheSteveBidwell10 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea, kind of like the scrolling ad banner you used to see at pro sporting events (before they all went digital). I like the concept, but have to admit that it's way beyond my level of expertise to engineer.

Steve, I am planning to build these boxes. Great video. How did you connect the boxes to an outlet? I do not see a cord running down from the frames. I would like to have my electrical behind the poster frame, but I am not sure what is needed.
@steviebid8 жыл бұрын
Hey John, my cord actually does come out the back and runs down; however, my entertainment system setup rather high and they plug into a power strip behind the TV that sit on top, so you really don't notice the wire too much. I've actually did a recessed outlet behind a neon wall clock, and that is very easy if you have a little bit of electrical skills and already have an electrical outlet below where you want to mount the recessed outlet. You can go to your favorite home center and find the recessed electrical boxes, cut out the drywall above your existing outlet and run the electrical cable up to the new one. A few words of caution if you attempt this: 1) make sure you turn off the power to the outlet you are connecting to before anything else; 2) use a stud finder and make sure there is nothing in way of the running the wire from one outlet to the next before you cut the drywall ; 3) many of the 12v wall transformers will not fit into the recessed outlet, so double check before you get started. Good luck with the project.

Steve...Is it possible to use a thinner frame for this project? I would prefer a depth of no more than an inch for the frame. What would be the issue going with less depth? Thank you!
@steviebid5 жыл бұрын
You can use a thinner frame, but if you get it too thin the LED may not diffuse as well and may appear as “spots” on the movie poster. You will have to experiment to see if you get that effect. Good luck.
@darrellhaslett13335 жыл бұрын
@@steviebid Thank you for your insight! I was looking at Glowbox, but the prices seem pretty steep. I did they claim a depth of just under 1". They show as 0.9"
@steviebid5 жыл бұрын
They may use a little edge lighting technique to get the frame so thin. The problem I see with that technique using the snap frame is that the backing isn’t clear, it sort of translucent, and I would be afraid that just LEDs around the edge of the box wouldn’t produce enough light when mounted at 90 degrees along the edge. Who knows though, I haven’t tried it, and maybe you could fit in 2 or 3 rows of brighter LEDS and it might work just fine. Probably worth trying if the depth is a show stopper for you. Best of luck, let me know how it all works out.
@darrellhaslett13335 жыл бұрын
@@steviebid I will try to reduce the depth & I will let you know how it works. Is there a minimum or maximum brightness for the LED light strips you would suggest?
@steviebid5 жыл бұрын
I’d use the 5050 leds. These are brighter and in the same quantity as the 2835’s will give you more lumens; however, I have not researched the latest in LED technology, so please don’t take my word, do your research there may be a better solution.

Can I plz know which type vinyl using for poster ? It is transfer or not?
@TheSteveBidwell5 жыл бұрын
Not sure I understand the question. I buy double sided movie posters. They are made of paper, not vinyl. Double sided posters have the image printed on both sides, not just one. This makes for a much more vivid poster when the light shines through. Single sided posters tend to look dull in comparison. When you Google movie poster titles that you are interested in, just make sure you include "double sided" in your search request. Hope I've answered your question, but if not please feel free to elaborate a bit more and I will try to help more.

man great video! would you ever consider building them custom? I would definitely want to know what you would quote me for 2 of these? the ones online are way overpriced
@steviebid8 жыл бұрын
Omar, thanks for the compliment, but I only built mine mine as a hobby and don't do this type of stuff professionally. I promise you though, you can do this yourself if you give it a shot. The key is the snap frame, and the rest is simple DIY skills. If you need help, just ask, I'm happy to provide guidance. I know if you look at the end product it may seem like a lot, but when you break it into steps it a much simpler project then you think. Good luck and let me know if I can help.

+Steve Bidwell Thanks a lot, I actually just showed your video to my dad, he is good with electrician work & stuff, so he will help me put 2 of these together. Great video, very informative. Would you happen to have a supply list already written out? I was taking notes during the video, I'm probably going to get the same frames you got
@TheSteveBidwell8 жыл бұрын
I don't have a build list, in fact if I did it would be out of date. For example, there are better, brighter LED you can get now (SMD LEDS), which I would recommend. Also, make sure you get the snapframe brand frame and not a knockoff. I had one guy tell me he bought a cheaper frame that looked like the snapframe but when it arrived it had a solid (not translucent) back, so the light would not shine through it. In short, besides the wood and materials to build the frame, you need 2 sets of LEDS, the snap frame, a 12 volt transformer, an RF LED inline remote, and if you don't solder, buy some of LED connectors to join the strips together. That's about it. Good luck let me know how it turns out.
@majorsevenmusic8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve! really appreciate it, should have it done this week, I'll be sure to let you know how it goes. I ordered all the supplies yesterday. I read a lot of your responses to comments and definitely brought the same snap frames from your first video, some of the newer LED's & dimmers.
@Humbrah_Holmes6 жыл бұрын
Steve Bidwell where did you get the remote from
@sumanchaudhuri60245 жыл бұрын
Steve, great video. A few questions. Did you use this frame: www.amazon.com/SnapeZo-Aluminum-Front-Loading-Mounting-Professional/dp/B007NX4DNW/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=27x40+light+box&qid=1571701071&sr=8-4#customerReviews Also, if you use this snap frame, do you still need a wooden box to mount this frame on to or can you put the LEDs directly into this snap frame? They don't seem deep enough to house the LEDs, the wiring and the poster, so that's why I was wondering if all that is housed in a separate deeper wooden box with this frame mounted on top of the wooden box?

@@TheSteveBidwell thanks .. i wanted to use opal white plexiglas instead of a translucent back because the frame that you use is very very expensive to buy in my country. Do you think it will do the job?
@TheSteveBidwell4 жыл бұрын
Yes, as long as light can pass through it. The frame I used actually had a white/opal backing as well, it wasn’t clear. Just make sure you can return it in case it doesn’t work and give it a try.
@caciqueboriqua10 жыл бұрын
Hello I was wondering how did you hide the cable that you plug into the power outlet. Thanks
@TheSteveBidwell10 жыл бұрын
I don't hide them. The poster boxes are close enough to my to my home theater cabinet that you don't really notice the small wire. If I needed to hide them however, I would install a recessed electrical outlet behind the box. If you go that route it's an easy task if you have an existing electrical outlet right below the location where you hang the poster box; otherwise, it becomes more complicated if you have to run a new electrical circuit. Hope this helps.

How are these posters?
@TheSteveBidwell Жыл бұрын
They are still working fine. I think the snap frames with the transparent backing are not easily found, and if you do happen to come across one and the prices have gone up considerably, so I'd recommend building your frame using the technique that I used on the Pirates light box. It's a bit more work, but the parts are easily sourced.I may end up building another one soon, as I really like the poster that was just released for Oppenheimer. Best of luck with your project.
