We go for a drive in the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek. Would this be your pick over the Mazda CX-30, Toyota CHR, Honda HRV, Hyundai Kona?

Definitely picking the HR-V over the crosstrek because 1. Magic seats 2. More cargo space 3. Standard Honda Sensing (in Canada) 4. Cool cup holder gimmick introduced for 2019 5. More here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWnOco2coMiEhrc

Parents got a '19 Crosstrek in stick shift. They like it but aren't in love with it. I was expecting the clutch to be similar to my '11 WRX. It's not. Early engagement makes it a bit weird to get used to but it does make you feel like it's got more pep than 150hp (throttle mapping is also responsible too). I still like the styling but think it's pricey for what you get. They make a big deal about Eyesight because they had been the best for about a second and then everyone blew them away within a few years. They are still trying to ride the name recognition of it and it helps bolster their reputation of building safe vehicles. You can only get the safety features with the automatics in the US which is absurd since companies like Mazda manage to include them with the their manual transmissions. Rear cross traffic detection and blind spot monitoring don't rely on the transmission in the car. It's BS. Subaru is under some stress right now. They seem to have a lot of mismanagement with all their scandals in Japan and the valve train recall. I still have love for them but some of their decisions just make me shake my head.

Is it an exciting car to drive? No. It is the crossover you should buy if you want to drive fast? No. But it will get good mileage, great traction and control, awesome visibility, safety, and resale value. Not a fun car, but dang is it practical and perfect for weekend warriors in snowy areas. The 2020 Legacy brings back the XT Turbo and I'm holding out hope Subaru offers that same option for this, because DANG would that be a fun little car!

I realize it's not the most exciting car, but for my lifestyle it's almost perfect. I hike, mountain bike, snowboard, and am a nurse (I mention that because that means when it snows, I'm expected to get to work no matter the conditions,) and my 2018 6MT takes me everywhere I need to go easily. I know, I'm a walking cliche. Even I give the occasional eye roll when Subaru owners gush about their cars...but tbh that awd system is as good as you've heard. It's not the most unique car anymore, but it's a blast to drive when conditions get bad, even on the stock tires. Great, fair review and even though they're clearly not excited haha, it's a great vehicle to look into buying imo. I will say the fact that it offers AA and Apple CarPlay is a joke because even after the update, it's essentially unusable for me. Aside from that, I love the thing and would buy it again in a second.

@SammyT Sure! It mostly boils down to a connection issue. A couple of things will happen. A. I'll plug my phone in, and the car won't recognize it. B. It will recognize the phone, work for a few minutes, and then disconnect. I can't speak personally to Apple Carplay since I have a Galaxy S8, but this is a topic I've seen discussed on the Subaru Crosstrek Facebook group I belong to and it seems to be universal. It doesn't happen to everybody, but it's a widely known issue within the community. I've heard if you upgrade the wire you use that can help but that doesn't seem to be a 100% fix for everybody. I use bluetooth successfully so even though that's a dissapointment, I love the car as a whole.

I was waiting for this review to come out before I bought my 2019 crosstrek premium IN MANUAL, and yes you guys nailed all the important points. The steering is hypersensitive, and the suspension is super supple, and it doesn't like to be rushed. IMO it feels best on the road while going 60mph, as it gets real twitchy making steering corrections at 80mph. And yes, it's slow, but with manual, the "drive a slow car fast" saying applies. A detail you guys didn't quite get to- it's got power up to and at 3k especially in 3rd gear, but then you gotta upshift or wait till you hit 5k rpm to get power again. It's frustrating but with stick its less of a problem than I'd imagine with CVT. Thanks for finally reviewing my carr!! And Yuri: I do feel it has the STI look for a non sti car.

No one buys a car with resale at the forefront of their buying requirements... people want to own something that lasts. Resale is one of the weakest sales points a company can make "you won't want it in a few years so you'll be happy to know it maintains value so you can dump it onto someone else and not lose as much"... Like really? Come on. Reliability and cost of ownership in the market isn't in their favor compared to competition. With that said... Subaru are some of the best originally for showcasing all these extra camera safety features I'll give them that. The Crosstrek is the closest thing to a proper "sub compact" crossover with true AWD and actual ground clearance and great visibility. And yes I'd probably say, outside the powertrain option, it's one for the best of its class and actually has utility versus something like tiny Kona...or worse a that toyota CHR(?).

@@DerekJamesMandy A lot of people only keep their cars for 5-8 years before they get bored and want a shiny new toy (I'm in that category unfortunately). Resale matters a lot in that case. For people who drive their cars for 15-20 years though, yeah pointless.
@DerekJamesMandy

@@emissarygw2264 resale helps with leasing...that's about it. And even so it doesn't seem to help Subaru with their payments for some reason as their cars are still pricey. Not to mention they have one of the worst warranties out there, at least in Canada. I don't mean to sound like a hater as I actually like Subaru. It's a little frustrating seeing this company with all this potential slowly get passed by the Korean brands. Even so, for most of subarus line up there always seems to be something just a bit better.

Thank you for the review of the Crosstrek. We have the 2018 and love the car. I've heard several people comment about the acceleration (negatively). Jeez man! It's a compact crossover. If you want to leave everyone at the stop light, and get a ticket for driving fast under conditons, (it happened to a friend doing just that as he was nailed by a plain clothes police car), then buy a sports car! For us driving within city limits of NYC, doing a monthly drive out to the North Fork wine country to pick up multiple cases of wine along with two passengers and at least two trips per year to Northern Ohio in various weather conditions...It's more than comfortable, capable and sure footed. @@TheStraightPipes I wasn't offended. Simply standing up for my favorite vehicle (for my everyday living). We do mostly highway driving (and a rare trip into Manhattan...easier to park than a larger vehicle) and twice a year for a little unpaved road camping trip). Gas mileage has been exceptional when driving just around the designated highway speed limits. There have been several trips with the mpg in the mid to high 30's and even doing runabouts in the city limits I'm in the upper 20's. I think the best car (like the best wine) is subject to your tastes (or in the case of the Crosstrek) it's my needs. When we visited the auto show and car dealerships our prerequisite was simple....Aesthetically appealing(to me), well layed out, good handling, safety, reasonable gas mileage, and finally, can seat four (we're are both 6') and hold at least four cases of wine. (Simple).

I have the manual crosstrek. It is quite awesome, it is like 80-90% the fun of a 2010 mini cooper base(the car I had before). Power will actually come on after 4k rpm. Check your tire pressure before you comment on the body row. Once the tire pressure is properly set, it actually corners very well for what it is. The all wheel drive system is great. Although the stock tire comes on the car in the USA for the base model is pretty shit. (yokohama geolander, check tire rack for rating). I switched out mine to continental true contact all season. Good grip for winter. You can also consider the good year assurance tires as they are also good for the winter. I think the base model of this car in manual transmission in the USA for the price range is really hard to beat for around 22-23k USD. Hope my comment can help some people here. Side note, they don't have to necessarily put in the STI engine in it because of potential reliability issues, but putting at least 180 ish HP outback flat 4 or 250 ish HP flat six would help. It is still pretty fun with the 152 hp engine with manual transmission. Just saying :p

Derek Mandy unfortunately, it IS reactive, AND incapable if sending more than 50% of the torque to the rear axle, which given how little torque these cars generate compared to their weight, is a problem when both front tires lose traction. Many other brands can send up to 100% to the front or the rear when it’s needed. What’s the use of AWD on a nice dry highway in the summer anyway?

People who complain about CVT transmissions nowadays are still living in the past when CVT's were new technology and shit. I'd take a CVT over an automatic or Dual Clutch transmission ANY DAY. Having had vehicles with both of those. Automatics get horrible gas mileage and Dual Clutch anything either has bad issues (looking at you Ford and Dodge) or drives terribly in slower traffic. I've never had a car buck so much as my DDCT did. The CVT is the smoothest I've driven for anything not manual. You can be a "car guy" and prefer to drive a CVT if you live in the city or a manual if you're not constantly sitting in traffic. People who commute in stop and go traffic that prefer to buy manuals are just masochistic.

I have this exact car to the dot: 2019 Limited, White. The pure utilitarian aspect cannot be overstated. For 30k, you get ride height, comfy suspension, low center of gravity lets it handle more like a lifted wagon vs. an SUV, short height and length with great internal space, rugged interior, 30mpg+, 8.7” ground clearance stock like a true SUV, ACC/lane keep, and modern tech. The uninspiring but reliable drivetrain rounds it out as maybe the most capable, no-compromises generic car on the market.

I only have two complaints about the Crosstrek. One is that quick overtaking can be difficult as rapid acceleration isn't quite up to scratch. The second is that it has quite large blindspots, particularly on the passenger side. I've nearly been caught a few times when changing lanes and not seeing a car tucked just inside the blindspot. But this is a complaint with most modern hatches snd SUV's. Apart from that, it's very comfortable, smooth, reliable and easy on fuel. It's very stable in all conditions and you can feel the car 'grabbing' the road. Ground clearance is excellent.

Thanks for the review, but the Crosstrek deserves a more exciting review than this. Good that Yuri likes it! But great effort, guys! At least you did a review, and I'm happy you did coz I've always been a fan of the Crosstrek -- otherwise known as XV in my part of the world. I got the 2018 Impreza a few months ago which is the "lowered" version, and been enjoying every minute behind the wheel. It's not a screamer but not all cars need to be fast to be considered good or great. It adapts to your driving style over time. I'm not a motorhead nor a racedriver, but I've learned to derive as much fun as I can from my Subie. That blue Raiu color you referred to is officially called Cool Grey Khaki, and it's an awesome look. Oh, and in Oz, the Eyesight comes standard in all trims except for the base model, which is usually reserved for fleet purchases. One other difference -- the Oz version uses electronic handbrake, not that lever....Can you guys get into the Outback next? Cheers!

We have s 2018 Impreza Sport and we absolutely LOVE it. We considered the Crosstrek but the hubby was tired of "suv's/crossovers". In the sport model you do get the larger infotainment screen which for those of us over 50 appreciate and we have the Harmon Kardon sound system which is FANTASTIC. The steering is as you said wonderful and the awd system is fantastic. I do wish that it had more power but then again I'm not a racer so it will do. I do use the backup camera a LOT and it is thousand times better than the one in our Toyota. Would I buy it again? Yes I would. Love our Subaru

I have the year 2018 Subaru crosstrek limited in white. That one comes with leather seats and heated steering wheels. Yes the Horse power on this is on the lower side but it gets you from point a to point B. Also the eyesight cameras are a lot better than the sensors that you get it on the front bumpers of other vehicles. The limited also comes with harman Kardon speakers and they are amazing. My dad even says they sound better than the speakers in his 2016 WRX STI sport tech. Hands-down (I might be a little biased) but I would choose the crosstrek over the Kona. The Kona looks a little childish in comparison to the crosstrek. I wish you guys would have featured the limited version instead of the sport version. Felt like you didn’t give the crosstrek a fair chance.

I have a 19 Orange Crosstrek Premium 6mt. It seemed like it would be a really cool car but there are a lot of issues I have with it now. The manual isn't really fun because it's programmed around fuel economy. They have rev hang built in so it's really difficult to get a clean shift, and the clutch is extremely light and vague. The AWD is good but it's not robust enough to handle more than dirt and forest roads, and if you put all terrain tires on it, it reduces the horsepower even further. Still, it's an all wheel drive manual crossover that costs 21k USD new, and it has CHARACTER, which is what I think makes it so attractive to most people. Subaru just finds a way to insert character into their cars in a way that makes it feel like more than just a transport device, even though the driving experience is definitely just transport device. I will be trading mine in this year for something more robust but I would be lying if I said I didn't feel a little sad about it.

I owned a manual 2017 Forester with the 2.5i. The car was horribly under powered. It was adequate on flat ground, but once you get in the mountains, it was horrible. I got rid of it after a year. It would be great with a small turbo or the new 2020 2.3T engine or the H6 engine.

@afcgeo882 5 жыл бұрын
JustinLegend except only about 5% of buyers bought the Turbo in North America when it was offered. It seems almost everyone who wants a fast Subie, buys a WRX and not a Forester, which makes sense: Foresters are utility vehicles, boxes on wheels. They don’t need to be fast. They need to be utilitarian, safe and economical. That the Forester 2.5 does very well. I recommend you look into a WRX or at least the Outback with the H6 or 2.4T. At least that’s a car... a raised car, but still a car.

The paddles work good for staying in a simulated lower gear in the snow for engine breaking as CVT's tend to coast more than a regular automatic. On my 2016 legacy, I used them in the snow and makes a big difference when coming to lights and stuff as you can let off the gas pedal and the car will slow quicker. I hope you guys review the 2.5ltr version when it comes out hopefully later in the year, at which point I might trade.

One thing to note about the CVT and "sluggish" performance. Subaru's CVT transmission "learns" your driving style to an extent which is a little weird. If you get in my 2018 Impreza you'd think it had mods because it's a ton more responsive and "fast" and quick to downshift than the 2019 impreza service loaner I had for a week which felt like a whole different car. The service loaner I'm sure has a similar history to your Crosstrek in that many people have been driving it. With the CVT and one owner though if it's a grandma driving it, it'll focus on fuel economy and being quiet. With my car I often have my foot into it, and it downshifts early and otherwise I would think lessen, not eliminate, a lot of the criticisms you guys bring up. Great review though, always look forward to your next review.

Agreed!... I've had my Impreza for almost 4 years (since it was only 12 miles old). Now at 37k miles, it just simply knows me. I hate letting other people drive it during long trips because when I do, I'm like... "my car does not like that.... No, don't do that... Oh god oh god, you're still doing that thing. " Or even my dad driving like it's an STI when he borrows it and comes back saying "I like that car, it's zippy!" I cringe, because although I don't go easy on it by any means, I also do not "zip" in it. My mother has an Outback and I dont like driving it, because she drives like a grandma. It's sluggish and slower to accelerate than my car. I just want to give it more gas, since it's designed for that... But it hates me when I try 😂😂. It is definitely used to her driving style and learned her ways (can't teach an old dog new tricks) ... Once I get a Crosstrek (or Forester - I'm still debating which for offroading and going out into nature), I'll be purchasing it new and Im sure that one will learn my driving style during the break-in period. Everyone drives different, but cars "learn" your driving for sure.

I bought a 2019 Crosstrek Limited in 2019. To date, 2/1/2024 and 10, 600 miles, I have not experienced any of the issues described in this video with my Crosstrek. My only complaints about my 2019 Crostrek, and I was aware of these 2 issues before I bought the Crostrek, is it is grossly underpowered which has since been corrected in the upper trim level Crosstrek, and the front seats don't fit my size. I'm 6'0" 180 lbs. and after 2+ hours of driving I'm really uncomfortable. I believe a seat bolster would correct this issue for me. All in all, for an around town grocery getter vehicle, as long as I'm not in the vehicle for longer than 2 hours at a stretch, I'm very happy with my 2019 Crosstrek. MPG has well exceeded EPA expectations. I've been driving since 1964 and I've yet to discover the perfect vehicle.

Shifting from 1-2-3 isn’t smooth because of the rev hangs, especially the second gear. If you want to get upto speed in a hurry, good luck. Lack of power is the biggest gripe. To everyone who says it’s too slow and underpowered: exactly how fast are you driving on a normal basis? I own an ‘18 Premium and I find it to be more than enough power. I get up to speed on the highway without any problems. I’ve never had any difficult getting up to 65-75 mph. If you’re driving in a mountainous region, yeah, maybe I could understand your argument, but then that’s where the paddle shifters come in handy. Downshift, increasing your RPMS, and you should have no problem maintaining your speed. People expecting sports car/full-sized SUV power in a crossover need to check their expectations.

The reason Eyesight is marketed so heavily is because no other entry level AWD cars offer this at that price point. Eyesight practically drives me home on my long trips and saves tons of stress from driving.

Lately the box tests have been bad. It's pretty easy to see that there is more room at times for more boxes on top. Atleast in my opinion. In reality ppl stuff their cars to the fullest .. idk, just a gripe I needed to mention. Love every video guys ! Been here since like 300k subscribers!
