The lore behind the early days of the empire really shows how much care and effort was put into the writing of the main Star Wars story. Even in a this fantastical galaxy far, far away, the causes and motives that lead to the creation of the Empire are nothing of the sort, they're completely plausible and understandable, and are "grounded in reality" if you will. I can easily see every day people welcoming a dictatorship if it meant an end to seemingly endless war and political gridlock that had cost the lives of millions.

IRL, various cultures are nostalgic for past empires, such as the Roman Empire, Imperial China, and Imperial Russia, but the Galactic Republic has been fighting empires for thousands of years; they see them as "other", and evil. In "attack of the Clones" Anakin says something along the lines that the Republic needs a strong leader with the means to force consensus. And I think we can assume he wasn't the only one with that attitude; and to people who think like that, an empire would be more appealing than a republic rife with corruption and other dyfunctions to the point it isn't able to function. In many ways the prequel trilogy explains why people like Lenin, Hitler, Mao Zedong, Pol Pot or Khomeini managed to come into power. The people in their countries were so dissatisfied with the way things were, they felt the later dictators would be the better choice. When we assess people like Lenin, Hitler... and Palpatine, we do so with hindsight. We know Lenin was responsible for massive famines. We know Hitler comitted genocide. We know Palpatine blew up Alderaan; but the people who applauded their ascent to power didn't know that's what they would use it for.
@lymedog31762 жыл бұрын
The reason the republic wasn’t as effective as the empire was that there wasnt a malicious person trying to uproot it. Second the empire ruled with fear and force and third the empire didn’t have the massive opposition, like the separatist, at their doorstep.

There has always been a direct comparison between the Empire of the Star Wars world and the Roman Empire. While movies like Gladiator may make it seem like everyone wanted to go back to the Republic, reality was very different. To most, the Republic was represented by what the opinion of the Galactic Republic was looked at by the end of the Republic. It should be pointed out that were watching everything through the lense of the Rebels, just kind the written history of ancient Rome came mostly from the elites and Senatorial class.

Yeah, I found the scene in Gladiator of Marcus Aurelius wishing to restore the Republic laughable. He implored Maximus to "end the corruption", to which my response was, "Dude, you're the EMPEROR! So you're saying you're the one who's corrupt??" In truth, the Republic was long dead well before the end of Augustus' reign, more than a century prior to Aurelius. And because Augustus ruled for so long, few were even alive who remembered the Republic. And those who were recalled the endless civil wars and strife that followed the death of Julius Caesar all the way to the 'Last War of the Republic' between Mark Antony and Octavian (i.e. Augustus). Heck, even after the overthrow of Nero in 68 A.D. and the subsequent civil wars of the "Year of the Four Emperors", there was never any talk of restoring the Republic. It was universally accepted that Rome would always have an emperor, the only question was who. Fortunately for the Empire, Vespasian emerged victorious in the end.
@timwhite55622 жыл бұрын
@@legionarybooks13 yup. By Aurelius it was closer to 200. That's like saying someone here wants to go back to being 13 colonies, which would be absurd. Well, maybe Rand Paul might want to go back to that, but even him it's probably wants to go back to 1812. "End the corruption." By whom? The Senate? They have about as much power as The Shriners or Knights of Columbus. Plus why WTF would they want that responsibility? Let's go back to Dictator after Dictator, Proscriptions, etc. As for Civil wars, they have enough of their own to deal with for the next century plus.

Actually, it wasn’t a direct occurence that happened once Dooku & Sidious took power. The flaw in this is that Palpatine was designing this "fate" of the republic for many years before he became Emperor. I's probably not shown in any official story but I imagine that the Empire cracked down on a lot of freedoms that citizens of the republic, especially of the core worlds, were used to. Things like free speech, not persecuting homosexuality, artistic freedom, freedom of assembly and so on. Imagine suddenly just publicly stating your opinion might get you jail time or even get you killed by stormtroopers. Imagine being homosexual or having homosexual friends and suddenly you or them have to go into hiding and fear for their lives. Imagine being an artist and basically being in the same situation or just an art lover and suddenly your favourite artists disappear or go into hiding. Imagine being a political activist and having to cease all activities at once out of fear for your life. Also: Racism against non-humas. They make up the majority of being in the Empire, yet they're second class citizens. Nah, thank you. Living in facism doesn't seem appealing to me at all. Also, I doubt that in dictatorships decisions are really made in a better way. Sure, they're made much faster than in a democracy but the people in power are usually not chosen because of their competence but because of their loyalty to the leader. They also usually report only positive things to their superiors as negative reports would be bad for their own career. That is one of the core reasons why Putin thought Russia could easily deafeat Ukraine when in fact this wasn't true: Nobody in Russias military gave accurate reports. And there is also the problem that dictatorships usually have a much higher rate of corruption because police and such do not investigate government officials. Also, I find it very odd that the Empire is supposed to have cracked down on criminals 100x harder than die republic and used non-humans as scapegoaths, yet the empire hired Boba Fett and other bounty hunters who clearly operated outside the law to hunt Han, Luke and Leia and yet, the Empire had apparently no problem with Jabba the Hut ruling Tattoine.

The Republic did start the clone wars. First by sending Jedi to a negotiation rather than an actual ambassador (Episode 1). Then when the threat of rebellion/fracture in the senate, they mobilize a full army. Following a Jedi sticking their nose in private matters, they invade a neutral world (Episode 2). All throughout the war the Jedi were being feared as the lack of "peace keeping" blurred into power hungry warlords committing war crimes on a galactic scale. So when the "rebellion" leaders had been killed not captured to be given a trial, that showed the true nature of these "peace keepers". To make it worse they then turn against the very chancellor they swore to protect. So following the attempt of seizing power, the Republic had no choice but to execute the traitors (Episode 3). When the Empire began its reign, many things the Jedi had turned a blind eye to, were being addressed. The fact a group of senators who supported the radical Jedi wanted to rebel, the Empire said "this galaxy has had enough war and destruction" and began removing threats to the peace for good. Something the Republic allowed to fester after centuries of promised peace. That is why such a huge chunk followed and agree with the Empire.

That's the allure of dictatorships, sometimes people would rather have safety and security than freedom. It's easy to look the other way when the government works for you but not for others. There are important political messages and, I would say, warnings in Star Wars. A lot of people don't like TPM because it was too political but watching the old movies before the prequels came out I was always interested in the politics; hearing Tarkin talk about The Emperor dissolving the Senate, I was dying to see what that looked like and that's why I love, loooove the prequels. I would've loved to see The Emperor actually declare the Senate obsolete, the speech he would give if any at all. Anyway, this is why I never trust, or want a leader that promises to fix everything, there's only one way to fix everything and democracy can't do it.

Here is an easy explanation, one is Democratic the other autocratic. With an autocracy and one that is more of a command style economy with fascist leanings, one person makes the decisions, they incur more risk but in the end there is less division and disagreement. However with a democracy it’s the consent of the masses, there is a implicit social compact for the governed and those that govern. They must act as the will of the people and or as the arbiters of right. This means more red team, more bureaucracy and more handshaking. In the end the latter was successful in creating freedom and choose the former safety and security. With an empire you know who leads, it’s clearly defined thus a singular person can have an impact to change things. With a bureaucracy it’s convincing or coercing and thus built on negotiation. What you get is less agreement but you get less jockeying for power or favor.

I would say that Empire is the best way to govern the GALAXY. But I can't get over the enslavement of the Wookies. They were a proud, honorable race of warriors. They did not deserve such a fate.
@noahtylerpritchett2682 Жыл бұрын
The Galactic Empire was necessary. It brought order, security, peace and stability. They had the wealthiest economy and highest employment rates, who's poverty is limited to non humans. The Empire had the largest army the galaxy ever had, ensuring a peace keeping force combating banditry, drug cartels, piracy and corruption, the least amount of mismanagement and a harsh dictatorship that brought a glorious justice system and disciplined culture. Therefore crime and lawlessness, anarchy and immorality was rare. They had conquered thousands of planets after the old republic with its corrupt democracy fell along with its unstable bureaucracy, leading to more efficient government among less men, And they had leaps of industrial innovation, technological development and scientific progress and urban planning a high employment and revamped education system among human mankind. The terrorist rebels and the new republic invites and sponsors crime and rebellion, corruption, lies and terrorism, ever so ironic the new republic had leaps of revolutions and terrorism after they won their insurrection and war crimes. Also it would of kept the Vong at bay

I'd assume the reasons for Disney hating the antagonist factions a lot more now is because of real-world politics. They hate the CIS because it's a faction fighting for national freedom and independence whilst having a "democratic" government to lean on who is willing to give security at the expense of freedom. And yet they hate the Empire because it's not a democratic government, and yet the empire is more willing to be fair to the galaxy's nations. Plus, it doesn't help with the obvious inspiration of the German Reich and the US military.

The Empire was fashioned after world War 2 Germany and Italy. Lucas showed that clearly and spoke about it when the matter of why so little diversity. The Empire was supposed to have little diversity as Palpatine focused everything on Human advantages. This is clearly visible in WW2, white men were treated well, others not so well or were eliminated entirely. The interesting part, Those "White" communities often favored the leaders. "At least under Mussolini the trains were on time!" Was a popular saying in post WW2 Italy. For them... it was better. That is the element used by Lucas in the Empire. For those actively being Genocide or post WW2, it was horrible. It is the same in Lucas's Star Wars. That is why all of Star wars diversity was with the rebellion under Lucas. Woman in charge, people of color and aliens (non-human) all fighting together. They were the ones suffering under the Empire. Disney of course blured the line starting with Rebels, making that harder to see. There will always be be advantages to every form of government, including dictatorship. But what is the overall benefits? The Empire was only good for those the leader (Palpatine) favors.

Although I agree with most of this how does the loss of the Martez sister's parents show the consequences of the war? Yes they lost their parents during the war but their parents died due an escape from Cad Bane when he busted Ziro the Hutt and the parents were killed during the crossfire between them and the Jedi. It was due to criminal activity not the war. Although I agree that the worsen condition on Coruscant, especially the lower levels where the Martez lived, was a result of the war.

Agreed. Palpatine used the same tactic as most dictators in our history. Pointing out the flaws of the current regime and creating a “devil” for the public to scorn. The most obvious, given the uniform style of the Empire are the Nazis. Fascism can easily be masked as Patriotism. Pointing the finger at “them” as the cause of the populations woes make the oppression of the targeted scapegoat as acceptable. Any time you see something like that popping up, you need to be concerned. There is nothing new under the Sun, only the names of the players change.
@richlisola12 жыл бұрын
The Imperial Uniforms are not at all like the “Nazi” uniforms, and even those uniforms weren’t Nazi, they were German, the Wehrmacht wasn’t allowed to he political, and the army uniforms and other military uniforms were iterations of prior German military uniforms.
@garyfrombrooklyn2 жыл бұрын
@@richlisola1 then German inspired uniforms, does that suit? They were grey with jackboots and jodhpur style pants. No it did not look exactly like the SS black, although the Empire did have colors like that in their uniform. The implication was if a Fascist, Xenophobic regime and the Nazis were the most popular. No military is allowed to be political but they are.

The problem with democracy is that everybody has a voice, so, if you don't like someone's idea you will speak against that idea, but that will make that person speak against your ideas, slowing down progress. In a dictatorship, decisions are taking faster, but a single person with all the power always goes crazy. I wonder if there is a middle ground
@Raul_Menendez2 жыл бұрын
Democracy is a double edge sword. You have the brightest of people to speak and at the same time the stupidest of people too. And as histoty shown, if a stupid person have enough charisma in trying times, that person would be elected as their leader. Such as for example: A failed Austrian Painter

It was better than the Republic. It never would have formed if the Republic wasn't completely rotten - Palpatine wouldn't be able to come to power unless the system was already broken. The Republic was such only in words, just like the US is regarding democracy - you're only safe if you comply, making it no different than the Empire. It included non-democratic planets, permitted slavery if it was faraway, and favored the Core as opposed to the Rims. It fielded an army of slave soldiers, through its long history it fought many wars with the Sith and the Mandalorians, and the CIS were wholly justified to break away, given the unfair treatment that they experienced beforehand. If you want to bring Alderaan, alright - the Republic completely destroyed the home planet of the Ubese, Uba IV, turning it into a wasteland simply because the latter didn't want to join and armed themselves for defense. The difference lies in the security and efficiency, which the Empire was much better at due to its centralized rule and honest approach to authority.
