I have to say that I think “appropriate” is based on where you wear something and not on age. Ageism is so subtle and I just want to speak up about it. Personal style is about whatever makes you feel great and I hope more women evaluate clothing based on that rather than age.

Unfortunately style is based completely on looks. And looks change with our age. I wish that was untrue. So we do need to consider that.

I disagree about the shoulder pads as we age we can loose volume in our figures and a shoulder pad can really help fill you back out I'm not saying to the most extreme version of a shoulder pad but it can definitely help and if you don't have curves can help balance that out too ❤

I’m breaking quite a few of your rules.😂. I’ve got my Doc Marten platform sandals on. Wearing lots of leopard print. And love my low rise super wide leg jeans. At 61 I’m in the best shape I’ve been in 15yrs. I’ve been a fitness fanatic my whole life, and have been killing it the last year. I feel great. I had to wear a uniform as a flight attendant and now can wear whatever I want. I’m really proud and happy I’ve been working out so hard. Until my 35 yr old daughter says no, I’ll keep wearing whatever I feel. 💪💃❤️💪

I’m actually in agreement with these tips (I don’t always agree 😋). As an over 50 creator I’ve been trying to be more aware of that I want to communicate to others by the pieces I wear. And one of the things I’ve been shying away from are ripped jeans. I own a few but having been pulling for them like I used to. I’m Adding some more classic ones to my wardrobe.

As a 64 year old, my last best asset are my long legs. 😊I’ve recently added skorts to my summer wardrobe. With a matching colour top they can look almost dressed up, but with a striped top or colourful tee they are comfortable and more sporty. I find that with more leg on show I like to wear flats and be more covered up top.

Oversize blazers work for me because I am so heavy chested. I was just in St Louis for my son's wedding, and I totally enjoyed touring about because a lot of family activities there was free. I have a extreme wide pair of black and khaki pants that I got from Karenbritchic's Amazon drop and I wore the black pair walking downtown with white sneaker and bone color oversize blazer and white top underneath and some young ladies gave me a compliment shout out from across the street. They made my day because I just got my hair cut a few days before and straighten the grey was popping but I not throwing money to the wind trying to keep it covered. My mother of the groom dress got compliments, but I just made the most of the body I am currently in.

Anyone who has been through the fashion extremes of the 70s, 80s and 90s isn't quite as excited to see most of those trends come back come back around. We have learned our lessons and moved on. But it is fun to see the younger generation experimenting and having fun. It is their time to try and see what works and what doesn't. That leaves the classic tried and true styles for those of us who appreciate them. The folks who try to wear those bygone trends again, well, no accounting for some people but they probably wouldn't be here watching your videos anyway to learn from your style tips and lessons. They are humming the theme songs from Dynasty and Dallas. lol Thanks for your great video!

I think that a lot of these rules depend on your personal style and body shape. I am over 50 and aren't going to be wearing oversized blazers because they swamp me. However shorter skirts look much better on me than midi skirts do. So a skirt that looks too short on someone else might look a good length for me. I also like some distressing on my denim, but don't take it to the extreme.

I usually enjoy your videos but I don’t think women over 50 need to be any more cautious about wearing trends than anyone else. In fact we usually have more confidence, know what we like and what looks good on our bodies than we did earlier in life. I appreciate when you focus on fashion regardless of age.

I wish we over 50s had more confidence, like younger generations. There seems to be more body acceptance and I think that is a good thing. I feel with advice for over 50s it's always about not looking old or unflattering or dated, when really true self expression shouldn't have so many rules. Maybe this is why young people as well as older people who don't give a toss about what everyone else is doing ...have such creativity and great fashion sense. Think Carla Rockmore...who holds on to items and rocks out in same items 30 years later. That's what excites me...not so much the rules and restrictions, but each to their own.

Thanks, nice video, and good for people with a very "basic"/ simple style.. just because I have turned 59 doesn't mean that I want to dial down neither my style, patterns not colours... I dont subscribe to that we have to be "less" with age... but we should, at all ages, if we want to look stylish and elegant, is to take care of ourselves, or grooming and that what we wear looks intentional and that they fit us in the way we want them to. Your style and outfits should make you feel great, because self-confidence is always in fashion ❤

I love the high fashion photos and street style you shared. Actually, I think if someone over 50 has the Balls the wear one of those complete outfits, they should!! But I totally agree if you're just choosing one of those elements you called out, caution is warranted. I think when you're younger, you're experimenting, don't really know who you are, and are more likely to listen to trends. (And thankfully, youthful beauty can outweigh a lot of fashion mistakes.) Nice point about the accessories! I've always wanted to have a great wardrobe, but it's not until the past several years, with the help of KZbinrs such as yourself, I'm finally understanding how to create a wardrobe and what truly looks best on me! So, thanks!

I think it's really common sense about not "dating" ourselves. I regularly look through my closet and at my body changes (I am 58) and decide that some items, even things I LOVE, have to "go". Our style definitely changes as we age and I think the point is to wear what you like and what looks GOOD ON YOU, but not to try to dress younger, embrace the outlandish runway trends, and dress for our LIVES. I could never dress formally for work anymore, because I only go in the office two days a week and work with folks who are SUPER casual. I like t-shirt dresses, paperbag waist pants with more fitted, stretchy tops (hide my meno-belly) and maxi dresses and skirts with great tops. I agree that accessories are ESSENTIAL. I use accessories sometimes to "match" an outfit or sometimes to draw the eye to my face, neck, or ears (those areas on me ar not fat! LOL). I love jewelry of all kinds and am obsessed with handbags and totes. Due to my job and my run-around, physical life, I can't always wear designer or super fashion accessories (like structured hand held purses or totes) because they do not fit my lifestyle. I am HARD on accessories. I love shoes, but with aging feet, bunions, arthritis in my toes, etc., I am very cautious about the shoes I wear now. I have to be able to put orthotics in ALL my closed toe shoes, and steer clear of super flat shoes unless they are for sitting at dinner or short walking distances. I am always told I dress well (I do live in NJ, so nobody here knows HOW to dress well) and I will give away a closet full of clothes if I feel they make me look less than my best. I cannot afford expensive items (Jenny Kayne - NO WAY, even with 15% off) but I do buy at discount stores and pair less expensive items with a few good pieces. Your videos help me understand what is "fast fashion" "high fashion" and fashion for the rest of us. Thank you! You are pure class and style.

I am glad you made an exception for olive skin, which looks great in a variety of colors. My skin is dark brown and though I am older, I still look nice in yellow--so far. A distinct skin tone can be like another color to your wardrobe. So it is a dynamic consideration when you are dressing. Thank you for your presentations.

Agree with everything you said assuming that the goal is to look current and elegant. Sometimes the goal is to distract from something that we don't have any choice about or to accommodate a specific issue. Today I need to distract from a large bandage on my left ankle. I am hoping that my hot pink top and red sunglasses will draw the first looks. My choice of a white knee-length "skort" might show a lot of leg but it is a vast improvement on shorts (mini-length when I sit). I am not fooling myself into thinking that a larger proportion of leg showing will make the 6" square bandage look smaller, but the proportion feels more balanced. And I am attaching the non-stick pad with flesh colored bandaids instead of white paper tape. Once my ulcer heals, I am going to have to get real about wearing compression socks every day. Bleagh!!! There are so many different styles of compression socks out there now, I will be doing a lot of open-minded experimenting with my style. I am leaning towards the fun and colorful approach simply because I find my situation so depressing. Cheering myself up may become my primary goal for a while. I may have to take photos, analyze them and discuss them with friends. I do have 3 maxi skirts and a bunch of midi's to work with. I've been loving wide leg trousers for a few years. Ankle length pants have not been among my favorites but I am still surprised how much I like Bermuda shorts, skorts, pedal pushers and capris. It's going to be a trip to make compression socks make sense for my personal style in the context of general current fashion norms. I may need to just cut and run in the direction of quirky, artsy, colorful, irreverent expressionism. Like I said, experimentation to come. I won't know until I try something on and walk around in public to see how I feel. I think settings of summer street fairs will help ease my self conscious a bit. And your advice about accessories will certainly help such drastic changes feel more intentional. Your video is really motivating me to make the extra effort to deal with accessories in a much more intentional way. I can see that it's going to take more advance planning if I am going to complete the plan when I am rushing out the door. BTW, I am a 66 y.o. woman with lipodermatosclerosis caused by venous insufficiency. I am sure I am not alone because the market is now exploding with new options for compression socks. I guess it's a thing. Thanks for another helpful video.

Always love your videos & appreciate the information. That said, I still love my ripped (not shredded) jeans, usually just a knee or raw hems. I worked in a professional setting for many, many years & while I still love a dressy top, I think a more casual, edgy ripped jean works for my style. Will not be giving those up anytime soon. As for the other tips/trends, I agree with most of your views. Did those in the 80's, 90's etc and learned what I can & cannot wear. Also, like you, I don't want to look like my style never evolved & just pulled clothes out of my 20 something closet:)

Another great video leonnie I agree with accessories being really important and I've found buying good quality but cheaper trendy pieces have been good for me it's okay to buy expensive real gold items in really classic styles so they don't look old-fashioned but I will buy gold plated more trendy items that it doesn't really matter if it only lasts a year or so because the trends have moved on by then same with belts and bags and shoes if they are trendy pieces I will spend less on them ❤

Agreed. Also, even on tall girls the GIANT oversized looks, while fun editorially (they make striking photographs) are ridiculous IRL. A woman with trousers trailing on the ground and sleeves ending inches below her hands is functionally compromised! Generally, what looks most chic in actuality is also what one can wear without visible struggle. “Effortless” is always in style.

Great points, Leonie. I really never care for shoulder pads, I already have quite big shoulders, and having hourglass figure, oversized clothes also never was my thing. Mini well you know , as we tall ladies, sometimes we wear little shorter skirts or dresses, just because it comes shorter on our height. But the shortest I would wear ( I have a few Chanel dresses that I love ) 36’ so it’s about 3-4’ above knees. But those I had for some years. Anything I bought this year, was actually maxi. I got quite a few dresses or like kaftans, or shirt dresses. I replaced all my more more body showing dresses. I kind of changing my wardrobe, not because I can’t wear, but because I just don’t want to wear certain clothes . I replaced them with more classic, with some edge. I think it’s more than sexy clothes. Fashion forward looking is a style, and doesn’t look trying too hard 😳🤪 lol 😂😂😂 Now I think some trends can be still worn with correct styling. Such as sheer trend, even metallic ( well I would opt for kind of matte silk , not shiny one lol ) but of course it has to be worn maybe with long sweater, jacket, west… and yes accessories are so important, and can spice up classy, little boring outfit. I invested, this year in edgy sunglasses. Yep platforms, they aren’t too comfortable, I still have Alaiia ones, I had for years, and I tripped many times 😱😂😳, so nope. I like mules. I would love to find edgy ones. It’s hard to find US 11-12 European brands shoes. Alaiia might have better fit, but it’s crazy priced and already sold out 42. Maybe will show up in preloved sites, at the end of summer. Have a blessed day🙏❤️

@princessmorning5332 I'd have a search for 'Brisbane Summer Fashion', 'Australian Resort Dressing' or 'Australian brands stylish summer dresses'. The heat and humidity of FLA has climate similarities with the State of Queensland. Brisbane is the capital city (QLD). Hope you find some inspo!

Disagree,it depends on the trend and the person. Shoulder pads would make a wonderful statement with short cropped modern hairstyle and big jewelry...make sure your hair is a shiny grey or white ! WOW

Re denim, I really dislike the reworked, often boxy/bulky/weird shapes we've seen on the catwalks and the shops this year, I don't think they're flattering or keepers, they will fall out of style very soon and they just look bad imo. I prefer traditional denim styles: straight/bootcut jeans, trucker jackets, shirt dresses, western-style shirts, all modern classics and have been so for decades. Denim footwear is a definite no for me, but I love Levi's denim totes, they're the only denim bag I like and totes are also ageless, timeless and strong enough for shopping, I elevate them with bag charms and cool brooches.

I’ve followed you for a while and appreciate your advice but I feel you only focus on new, current clothes and accessories. (Maybe because you are focused on getting your followers to shop your sponsors?) However, at 60, I have some amazing vintage pieces and collections of things I love but don’t wear, for fear of aging my look. Examples include bespoke vintage purses, hats, and jewelry I don’t want to let go of; they’re unique, better quality than any of the luxury brands sold today and many are in classic shape for their era. I’ve stopped shopping new retail, opting for thifted items and found some gems but I’d like some help incorporating those special pieces into my look without dating myself. Carla Rockmore is inspiring to me but I don’t have her phenomenal closet nor exuberant personality to pull off her outfits. How can we incorporate bespoke special pieces into a modern outfit? again, the quality to price ratio is terrible and selection is too uniform). I’ve exclusively been thrifting for the past few years, finding interesting authentic pieces from many decades back. I’d love to see more from you on how to incorporate authentic pieces from other decades without looking dated. Examples could be those of us with collections of things we love but never wear because it’s hard to know how to blend a vintage showpiece with a modern up to date outfit. For instance, a 1960s Bakelite jewelry collection, accessories, fine leather gloves and purses from the 1940s-70s, custom cowboy handmade boot pieces that are authentic 11970s, 80s, 90s . .

I love Leonie! But everyone 50 and over don't look the same. Just because one person over 50 looks aged in something does not mean someone else of the same age will. Everyone approaches aging differently. There are some 50 and over people who look better than someone younger. Please don't box!

I didn't disagree with a single tip! I don't wear any of these items because I feel I am too mature for them, especially the over-ripped jeans...no, no, no.✌🏾🙏🏾

@klynnharrison5072 I didn't even wear the ripped jeans first time round. (Maybe just a few distressed spots.) They were often shown as being quite hard edged fashion with sharp heels, or else a windswept-blonde beach look. As I am neither, it always felt quite easy to say 'no thanks' to that particular denim trend.

I'm going to raise something which I think is really ageing but will no doubt cause angst. I think that women over 50ish should invest in a really good haircut. I don't understand why women are so obsessed with the long straight hair parted in the middle. It looks dragged down and flat, no body, no style. It frequently has tattered dry ends. It looks so samey on the younger girls, but even changing to a side parting and some layers takes years off. There are some cunning styles for women of a certain age which give the hair some body and thickness, and are easy to manage. I know that some will say they can put it up in some sort of bun or pony, but when it's dragged tight it really looks like your hair needs a wash. A good cut will shape the face, restore the cheekbones, and takes years off. I'd be interested in your views?

I hate these videos. Age has nothing to do with dressing today. People are living over 100 yrs old. Do you really think they should limit what they wear? Fashion will come around about 3-4 times in that amount of time. We can wear anything! Styling is rhe most important. If you ask me!!! People need to practice styling peaces because the way the model is,wearing it may not be how you should wear it.

@melissagriffin7515 Whereas I see a video like this as encouraging us to think about our own key criteria BEFORE we shop. A bit like a Pause/Amber Light situation. Because some of us (me) can get VERY easily swept away with shiny, new season ranges. I think if someone's unsure about their personal style, has multiple personal styles or is in transition, then they may be more vulnerable to trend shopping. Edit: I do agree with your point though that age is just one of many factors. And may not even be a consideration at all for some women 😊

I think you're being very judgmental, whereas I don't believe we should wear miniskirts, & white boots when we're 80, I do believe if it looks good on you, wear it! This isn't the world of my grandma. Grandma's these days rock it and look great! Look in the mirror, if you're not comfortable, don't wear it. I saw a you tube video from a model who said "don't wear makeup" after 50. I thought, wth? I'm glad she owned her over 50 persona, but she was a model, hello! I don't know any woman after 50, not wanting to look her best. Maybe you can stop being critical and show the hot grandma's who look good in the current styles. Just my opinion.
