Most of the songs from AJFA are faster than SOH. People complain about the lack of bass on And Justice For All , BFD. The Vocals on South of Heaven are weak AF . The Judas Priest cover would have been great if Tom would have used the Voice he apparently lost on Reign in Blood. His guru chanting style on South of Heaven luckily was a one time only deal. South of Heaven was the slowest Slayer album

And Justice For All is my favourite album by Metallica. It has such a brilliant display of riffs, lyrics, solos and drum playing. It has a bad luck of being released between Master Of Puppets (which is their most critically acclaimed album) and Black Album(their most commercially successful album) so mostly it gets overlooked by media and some fans even though it is a classic record . This also can be said for South Of Heaven, it is kinda squashed between Reign In Blood and Seasons In The Abyss so it doesn't gets enough recognition as a great classic record.

Couldn’t have said it any better & nice analogy on both releases, they’re sandwiched between more known classics, AJFA is my favourite Metallica release too, I would even say it was their peak musicality, just the solemnity & technicality while maintaining the heaviness.

This was the album that Metallica was heavier on than Slayer. South of Heaven is Slayer Lite. South of Heaven, Ghost of War, and Spill the Blood are the only songs on SOH I'm really a fan of. @amandahuginkiss6868
@amandahuginkiss6868 Жыл бұрын
Yeah whatever dipshittery they were into for the entire tone of that album is still odd. I remember listening to it when it was new, and I had to give it about 5 listens before I got it. Live recordings from that time frame sound pretty good, but the studio album is not great. The guitars are almost all mid range, and the guitar is a mid range heavy instrument so that gets weird. There is no bass, because of many reasons, i.e Newkid usually copied Jaymz rhythms, plus they were hazing him hard because he wasn't Cliff (we all probably know the story by now). And the drums sound like crap too, and unfortunately influenced some bands to copy that clicky drum sound (Testament, I'm looking at you). Contrast that with Garage Days Re-Revisited, which had bass and a decent drum and guitar tone despite a lack of polish, and it's really weird. But yeah, it's still heavy AF.

Imo Justice is the best and most underrated album of Metallica. I never understood why none is talking about it. Technically, sound, arrangements, everything top tier. Still everyone has the mainstream "Black Album" in mind when thinking about Metallica. Also, basically every song on Justice is a masterpiece. Usually you get your 3 songs with the rest fillers. Here every one is a blast and well written. Very good playing :-) like always

Loved it! High School Senior memories here. I left my "South of Heaven" cassette at a friend's house, which is where his family had a local "Youth for Christ" meeting for kids at my school. His Mom found it downstairs and did not care for that evil cassette being in their house. She called my Mom and my Mom gave me a good scolding. Although I DID win her over with the lyrics to "Silent Scream", a very Pro-Life song...but all the skulls, inverted crosses, and pentagrams, and Satan stuff didn't win her over. I tried though!

I love the Slayer riffs because they sound dark and haunting, and the Metallica riffs are complex and classic. Different sounds that mostly comes down to your preference. Do you prefer the dark, eerie sound of South of Heaven, or the technical, progressive sound of AJFA? I have room for both, so it all depends on how I'm feeling that day.

Oh, man. You got that Slayer sound on point. Good effort on the Metallica front as well, fuckin' sharp. Especially on "The Shortest Straw" and "Dyers Eve". Great battle. "Silent scream / Behind the Crooked Cross", cult thrash riffs : 🔥🤘. Legendary albums, maybe my favorites from both bands (with Reign In Blood). I'll be looking for Reign in Blood vs Master of Puppets, too. Along with all your Dave Mustaine covers. Thanks in advance, TheSuffocator. Great stuff, as always. Classic thrash metal, right there.

Agreed. This was the first SLAYER album I really got into. It was fast and brutal, but the slower tunes with some (gasp!) melodies works really well for a band that is screaming about Satan. And then I got into Reign In Blood and forget about it....

Anybody ever theorize or imagine what Metallica would’ve created if Dave had never been kicked out and Cliff hadn’t died? Of course you’d have to assume that Dave still got clean and all but FU&k! Can you even imagine James and Dave in charge of riffs with Cliff providing guidance on melodies and harmonies? It’s too far beyond my capacity for fantasy.💪🏻🤘🏻

Third time watching this. I borrowed Justice from a friend in high school and then wondered where this music had been all my life. I loved the technical abilities of each band member (even Lars you haters), but I wish Jason could be heard a little easier. The first four albums are absolute masterpieces, but this one holds a special place as my first. Slayer has some excellent sounds, but they go too far with the Satanism theme for my taste, I can’t go there, but I’ll give them their due, they’re excellent musicians 👌. Great video.

Metallica at this point played a somber thrash metal with a dense guitar sound, rich in melodies and angry drumming. Slayer played what you could call dark thrash, the riffs are straight-out violent, the drumming is pure aggression, the guitar distortion didn't need to be the densest, the music itself probably makes Slayer the heaviest thrash metal band in all History.
@angelotrinidad6888
