I think April has a high level of emotional-intelligence and a deep respect for the differences in people. I think it's obvious she lives as she believes all would be happier - with just has much stuff as is required and loved and no more - but she always schools herself and controls her response to be able to help the person in their current state - not some dream reality where the person's already done four passes and is getting better at focusing in and targeting their dream space - but now - when they're overwhelmed and have no structure to work within to help themselves get where they distantly see they want to be. It's a talent, but you could work to get there - think of it just like a decluttering muscle - letting go of your frustration and anxiety with clutter to be able to help others 😊

With all the kindness and love in my heart, I am going to predict that the great unhoard boxes just a hoard box. I can literally feel that whenever she doesn’t wanna get rid of some thing she puts it in the box so hopefully it will just sit there for a year and then get tossed . I’m an artist and I have ADHD, and I would bet cash money because of all the things that I have saved for “future projects”. I am hoping it’s something like what another Declutter calls the deep freeze.. put it away for a year. See if you really need it back and then it will go.

Honestly and lovingly offered: NOT. HELPFUL. This is Tracy's journey, not yours to make an assessment! Why don't people understand this? Your perception is through YOUR FILTER. She will do what she does and it has absolutely no effect on your life. As a person who tends to let things pile up due to illness, ADHD, and depression, TRUST ME WHEN I SAY YOU HAVE NO CLUE. So, wishing you the very best, and hoping to crack open a tiny spot for witnessing and accepting people in all stages of the process. ❤❤❤😊❤❤❤

I’m suspicious that The Great Unhoard shoes are not going anywhere given how easily she puts them in that category. One solution is to make a memory book. I made a great little book about my husband‘s T-shirt collection. We took a photo of each T-shirt and told the story behind each one. As a result, he felt good about letting them go and he didn’t lose any of those precious memories of our kids’ swim meets, championships, travels and connections.

She's doing really well! We're all cheering for her from the sidelines, like she's running a marathon, so she's not alone on her journey! I love the idea of the great unhoard! I wish I had the patience to take pictures or something of my shoes before letting them go, but I was more in a state of they have to leave my house immediately or they'll stay because I'll be too lazy to do that again the first declutter. The next 2, I was just gleeful to get rid of stuff & going "space, space, I have space!", lol. I'll do a last pass soon. I do one every change of cold/warm, but I'll have time soon, so I'll do a thorough full pass & that will be it. Then it will be just maintenance & only buying what's worth the use of my precious empty space.

Tracy-thank you for allowing us to be motivated and appreciate how good the hard can feel. Personally, this motivates me to stay on top of stuff- we lost our 160 yo farmhouse to fire in 2022 and the last couple years have been quite the roller coaster. Figuring out how and what we could rebuild AND having to be ruthless about the things we kept (we were able to salvage quite a lot from the house). Very stressful. One thing I know, I don't ever want to have to do that again. My solution will be to be very careful about what I let back into my home. As a side note, I do have a limited space to keep my "just in case" things-but they too will be sorted on a regular basis. Good job so far, good luck with the rest of the declutter!

What a great example of adapting strategies to a person and her place. Love her customized un-hoarding project -- choosing and documenting the stories and her association with special shoes before some of them move on. A creative approach which might take longer but will have personal meaning in the end. There are a lot of life and personal experiences embodied in many of the things we find hardest to part with and I'll bet Tracy's Instagram will also inspire others, who might take a quicker route but might not have started the journey otherwise. Thanks to Tracy for allowing us in. Great job, you two.

I can relate to how hard it is to let go (of stuff), I’m glad she made so much progress, but where it comes to the great unhoard, I would suggest letting go of those things as you don’t want a pile of clutter lying around in your house which consists if a project that you will never get to. That’s what happens to me: I had lots of projects and I never finished them so I let them all go aside from one or two, and I’m still procrastinating on those so I have to remind myself to keep working on them.

Whoa - she sure has a lot of shoes. It's going to take a few passes going through each category to get it more manageable. I tried to help someone like this, it was very difficult. She wanted to tell the story of each item as we sorted, she didn't understand the "quick sort" theory. She had 176 shirts on hangers, this didn't include All the shirts in 2 dressers that were full or ones in the laundry!

A 70+ man I know decided to thin out his short sleeved tshirts. He donated 75 of them. His wife says he still has 100+ that he isn't parting with. I used to beat myself up for having more than I needed. At my worst, I never managed to get anywhere near having 175+ short sleeved tshirts.

I'm the "story for every item" kinda person and it makes cleaning and decluttering *so* hard! I can remember almost every receipt and piece of packaging and there's a story for everything. To combine that with the fact that I don't want to throw usable things away... Yeah, can't get rid of anything. Would love to learn how. As an example, just today I ran across a cardboard sleeve for a chocolate bar in our burn pile. My mom brought that chocolate for me over 30 years ago, from Austria. Like, who keeps a chocolate wrapping for 30 years? And wants to rescue it from the trash? Apparently I do.

A tip from me I recently had to declutter a persons 30 year old clothing hoard. Clothes that are not used also need to be be washed and aired (daily airing) out even if they are only hanging in the closet. It's literaly not worth it to hang on to old textiles as those especially shirts will start to dry rot or begin foxing process (brown mold spots) just like some paper. Elastic clothings and synthetic fibres might become stiff and feel crunchy after a few years which makes them unsalvadgable. If there is a way you can convince the person you are helping out that their time is not worth it to care for rotted clothes you may change their mind.@@darleneh608

A very important rule to helping someone declutter, is to not let them touch the item they're considering. Stand at a bit of a distance and let them decide. All retailers know one of the great keys to getting someone to buy their products is to get the customer to hold the item. That's when the connection begins.

I am asking myself if flew market means, she is doing it herself ( and potentially bringing back all the not sold shoes...) or if it means she brings it to someone or a shop who is selling it. For me it always was a too big barrier to get rid of things myself. I am creative person too- I stopped keeping things "for projects" as I never ever was doing them. Also I think a no buying year or more could solve a lot of issues, as they are many things freshly bought. Uff, you two are doing so well and you are so positive! I definitely cannot handle a lot of things around me, I am immediately overwhelmed even watching this. And I am glad I got further and further in downsizing as its so much mor life supportive and healthy for me than keeping things...:)

I just let go of half my shoes. It is so hard to part with them. I only kept what would fit on my shelves ❤❤❤

Back here to rewatch! I just watched the video on 9/29/24 that came out today and could not remember where all of her shoes were on this first day of decluttering and creating the great un-hoard! So glad I did! It was definitely fun and good to look back on all that Tracy has accomplished. ❤❤❤

I just want to tuck all those shoe strings in the shoes so bad!!! I love the motivation for a good declutter! She is doing great especially since she has never done this with her clothes and shoes before! 🎉

I had a similar problem with a pair of sandals of another brand. They fixed it but they were no longer that comfortable like before because they got tighter in the fixed area.

Tracey, you’re not a hoarder! You are a lover and collector of beautiful shoes, that remind you of places you’ve visited. I’m amazed at how loved most of your shoes are. I’ve known a couple of people who actually had dozens of pairs of shoes, never worn. That’s a waste. Looking forward to seeing you make progress. Thanks for taking us in your declutter journey. PS- your little puppy sleeping in the background is adorable!

I’m an artist with ADHD too &!have hoarding tendencies & yes she’s a hoarder. There’s emotional attachment to STUFF. I don’t mean it as any kind of insult. It’s deep feeling, emotions that make many of us empathetic & artistic. Unfortunately I can be extremely creative with thinking about how I can keep & use everything for a project.

Coming back to this after watching the last episode just released, She's making such great progress with everything. It took me years of decluttering to finally get fed up with all the stuff in my area, now I'm getting rid of things left and right but it took me years before I was able to handle doing that.

Maybe I'm desensitized after trying to help my aunt downsize a lifetime of stuff but this doesn't look like hoarding to me. She has a lot of stuff but nothing you couldn't take care of in a week or 2. Good thing she's young and willing to nip it in the bud.
