It's trench warfare and it's just about the worst kind of fighting there is. Surely it was hellish 100 years ago in WW1 but, even then few troops had submachine guns, only bolt guns, pistols and knives. Storming an occupied trench, especially if they know you're coming, is damn near suicidal unless you could pound it with artillery first, even then the Russkies are dug in worse than rats.

Sometimes it's impossible to get eyes on the enemy and you just have to lay it down in the right direction. Plus they know they are attacking trenches so a lot of it is to supress until they get close enough to use grenades. Or until they are at point blank range basically. That shooting at the wind is the reason they aren't taking accurate return fire from the Russians.

The point was not shooting trees, but to rain hell down on known enemy positions while they advanced on Russian positions. Those rounds aren't wasted; any orc that would dare lift his head up to defend his position would instantly fertilize that rich Ukrainian soil. That team performed as trained, flawlessly. @@shandrmomot4175 what is your experience to be able to criticize this assault? There job is to keep the Russian invaders heads down continuing the suppressive fire initiated by the APVs. They are using both machine guns and automatic rifles, I doubt there is much return fire under this barrage. If you watch the whole video they take Russian prisoners. Go back to your game boy.

Hit the high-value targets with HIMARS; saturate the trench line with artillery; mess it up some more with tanks and cannon fire from APCs; then send in the boys to clean up what's left. The AFU has got trench clearing down to a science.

This is very impressive, no good guy was killed or wounded, everyone was stood up in full view of the enemy, firing whilst walking forward, not taking any cover and even virtually shooting over his fellow soldiers shoulder from behind, all incoming rounds were fully surpressed, even firing single shots into bunker whilst stood at the entrance and didnt even need a grenade, absolutely amazing!!

This is called "probing by fire" as they advance. The fire discipline could have been a little better, the spacing and alignment was not the best, however they are Trained and Competent, and adjusting to the dense undergrowth. Most of the Russian troops retreated, only a few were too scared to move, and were either killed or captured. Perhaps there may have been a couple who stayed to try to surrender, even though Putin passed a law saying any Russian soldier who surrendered would be jailed for 3-10 years. Many of the Russian troops are poorly trained conscripts, or criminals, forced to fight with 2 weeks of training, little food, little fresh water, no real attempt at field sanitation (disease is always a huge concern).

Yes, the last of the clip showed some Russian conscript soldiers surrendering. Most of the rest of the Russians probably retreated. These were either too scared to move and risk getting killed, or maybe even had a plan to stay behind and try to surrender even though Russia will put them in jail for that if they ever return to Russia (prisoner exchange etc). Then again, many of the conscripts are criminals offered amnesty for their crimes if they fight, or even just forced to fight. Nuts!

Serious question, would be nice if someone with military background could answer it. In the beginning and most of the video, are they shooting blindly or do they actually see a target? Or is it more some cover fire blindly so other troops/groups can advance so you attack the ennemy from multiple directions?

Military background here.. it's not like in the movies where distances are shorter than reality, for more cinematic action. Distances are mostly far, lot of suppressive fire where you shoot at last known enemy location. You don't always know if you hit something or killed someone. Russians are hiding in trenches and foliage. You have to cover your assault by laying down fire, so they keep their heads down. Then you throw grenades when you have closed the distance etc.

As a former Marine and Army Infantryman, these tactics give me heartburn. Set up a base of fire with some talking guns while conducting a coordinated envelopment with primary and secondary modes of communication. This laissez-faire assault is a gaggle, and they are going to end up with friendly fire casualties. Who is teaching these guys, where is verbal commands by the squad and team leaders?

As a former Marine then you should have figured out this is being filmed on a GoPro cam with a fish-eye lens and that changes the perspective of what you're seeing. They can't set up a base of fire when storming trenches because speed and moment is paramount. That may work defending a trench line from an attacking force because you can set up Enfilade Fire.
