And here's a, though admittedly crazy, idea I had: have Next Level Games take over the series! The dudes over there make some fantastic animations when it comes to Mario games (look no further than the Mario Strikers series and the Luigi's Mansion games from Dark Moon onwards), so imagine stuff like the Bros. Attacks and the like with THAT amount of charm and personality

If Mario & Luigi ever does come back on the Switch, then the entire Mario RPG Quadrilogy would be on the system, meaning for the first time ever, you could play every single Mario RPG series on the same system in bigger and better definition than ever before. While Superstar Saga technically did get rereleased on NSO, a full-on remake or revival of the M&L series would essentially make the Switch the best console for Mario-related RPGs. It would basically offer the best of all 4 subseries in one package.

How about the Wii U, that had Super Mario RPG on the Virtual Console, a new Paper Mario, and two Mario and Luigi games on the Virtual Console, but no Mario + Rabbids, since that didn't exist on the Wii U. So the Wii U (at its lifecycle) did have all the Mario RPG series.

I'm happy to see Mario RPGs back in the spotlight but now it just feels like a piece of the puzzle is missing. Not only are Mario RPGs having a comeback, but there is also a nice variety on Switch that can appeal to many tastse. Want something slower-paced where you plan out your strategy and have various elements to upgrade? Mario + Rabbids is there. Want something traditional but still has depth to how to you play and customize yourself? Thousand-Year Door is there. Want something old-school that doesn't have ALOT of combat elements tied to it? Mario RPG is there. No matter what you play, you are going to get a different experience.

My first choice to develop a new M&L game, or any Mario RPG, would be Next Level Games. They do a great job of bringing out the personalities of Mario characters. Alternatively, give Camelot a crack at it. They made Golden Sun, and a bunch of Mario sports titles. I think they could make something decent at least.

I feel like how I feel about the creativity of mainline Mario games vs a lot of the Mario RPG spinoffs has really flipped over the years. Early on I would look towards the Mario RPGs as the side of Mario that was allowed to be daring, creative and come up with new characters and lively worlds, while seeing the mainline games as largely more restrained and being played by the book. It's kind of crazy to me to think about how as time has moved on it feels like they both switched completely. With the mainline Mario games (especially noticeable from Odyssey onwards) becoming more daring and creative, while the Mario RPGs started to feel more restrained and uncreative.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope also gave us some DLC campaigns, including one with Rayman at the forefront. That already is great for Rayman fans (especially since Rayman has been pretty dormant outside of mobile spinoffs, ports and cameos since a decade ago), but the fact that this love letter to the Rayman franchise is allowed to make its home _in a Mario game_ is also amazing. The Mario + Rabbids devs did something similar for Donkey Kong in Kingdom Battle, which is pretty cool too.

It all depends if the interest is there, both of these have to sell very well to tell Nintendo that people want Mario rpgs. Please buy the TTYD remake, do not have all the complaining of Modern Paper Mario and enthusiasm of the old games be all talk. It needs to do well, I beleive Modern fans should buy it too, it really lives up to the hype. If these do well this might bring back Mario and Luigi, again it all depends if the interest is there.

I had given up on Paper mario and was just about ready to give up on Sonic, yet now we live in a time where Sonic is back on track and on one hell of a roll know. With Paper Mario one successful remake away from a bright future now. And yes I'm completely confident Thousand Year Door will sell just based off the reactions to it alone so far. Same with Mario RPG for that matter, I think both have the potential to do at least as well as the Xenoblade games and that alone will be so good for both. Getting a new studio to handle Mario and Luigi would'nt be hard, I'm sure there's people old and new willing to take this on for Nintendo. I gotta imagine their already really thinking about it though and it's just a matter of when.

And to go from that to all this goodness is still hard to process. Even though I'm still iffy on the future of them past straight remakes... I'm full of actual hope and satisfaction currently. I own all of the Mario and Luigi titles, remakes included. I still remember how I found out about the series through my sister's copy, and how she let me keep it. I was immediately sucked into the world and everything to do in it. Paper Jam may be considered the worst due to working with restrictions, meaning all those Toad Quests and feeling bare bones vanilla in terms of plot, but I see it like Eurogamer did-recycled enemies and such, but also reliable. And the final boss theme is still so great. I truly hope they make a comeback, as do AlphaDream, because to quote Leaxel, "You're the old hands.".

Technically, if you think about it, Paper Mario strayed from its roots in 2007, with Super Paper Mario. And I vividly remember people didn’t like Super Paper Mario at first, but then people became more fond of it later. So basically, when the TTYD Remake comes out, Paper Mario will ACTUALLY be returning to its roots 17 years after it changed.

The idea that Bowser’s Inside Story won’t get a remake/remaster for switch (or whatever comes next) because it got one on 3DS for some reason pains me. If they had released the BIS remake for switch, it would have sold infinitely better. It really feels like M&L was executed just bc Nintendo wanted to keep the 3DS alive for some reason.

As much as I would love for the Mario RPG renaissance to fully come full circle and bring back M&L into the modern generation I fear that history may repeat itself with creative competition. We've all heard the BS explanation that Paper Mario lost its rpg focus because Nintendo felt it and M&L were too similar. History is what it is, but now that SMRPG and TTYD remakes are confirmed it seems that at least a few executives within Nintendo are willing to humor the old school fans. We are all riding the high right now, and we should, but we still don't know the true business nature of why all this is happening now. Paper Mario and M&L did coexist as full rpgs for several years, and despite their niches being clear to all us gamers the gutting of Paper Mario still happened, and unless this rpg resurgence is truly as pure as we all hope it is this could very well happen again without anyone realizing before it's too late. The important thing to note here between all the various Mario rpgs out right now is which studio develops them and their relationship with Nintendo. SMRPG and Mario+Rabbids are developed by Square Enix and Ubisoft respectively, and what these two have in common is they are independent third party studios. Nintendo can make contracts and lease out their IPs to them, but they can't have too much control over the ideas and methods of these studios since they don't legally own them. If Nintendo puts too many demands on them third party studios reserve the right to simply not do business with them at all, so they have to recognize some boundaries with how they instruct them to design a game with their IP. Intelligent Systems and formerly Alphadream are second party studios of Nintendo, so they have enough shareholding of the studio to make full corporate demands on them to a degree. This is probably why Nintendo was able to force IS to change Paper Mario for the sake of M&L, yet while this was happening M+R could have greater creative freedom than either of them since they cannot order Ubisoft around in the same way. I've never believed that Paper Mario and M&L were direct rpg competitors of each other and I would love for the two of them to coexist in harmony again. But Nintendo needs to want that too if any positive change is to happen. Now is the best possible chance we've had for that in a decade, but until we know exactly have embracing Nintendo is now for allowing creative Mario RPGs that don't follow the platformer template to exist in close proximity to each other it may be best for M&L to keep laying low for a while longer.

Alphadreams influence on Mario & Luigi dates back as far as Tomato Adventure. They remained pretty consistent right up to their bankruptcy and if M&L were to return in a non-remake form, I dont think it would ever feel the same. Maybe with some key people back in the same production, but thats not very easy to accomplish.

After all the Square Enix characters that got in smash ultimate and a mix of Disney with Sora, I thought a Mario RPG remake wasn't as impossible as others did just unlikely just for it to actually happen and I'm so glad it is! As much as I would love to see a Mario and Luigi revival of some kind at the same time, I'm kind of scared of it happening because I really don't want the Mario and Luigi series to get "Modern" Paper Mario treatment if it got a theoretical type of reboot of some kind and I don't want to imagine on how that would turn out but overall the future for Mario RPGS looks EXTREMELY bright And I could not be happier! But I'm still reluctant on the Mario and Luigi series making a coming back I just don't want the series to degraded itself and if that was the case then I would rather just want the series to stay dead then hopefully that not the case but only time will tell.

This is what I think happened. After Mario and Luigi kickes the bucket Nintendo reached out to square. We might be getting more Mario RPGs made by square. Now that square is making RPGs again, Nintendo is going to return to form with Paper Mario. They started changing Paper Mario because they already had the Mario and Luigi series which isn't the case anymore

My tin-foil hat theory is that Nintendo started development of SMRPG and TTYD remakes shortly after AlphaDream filed for bankruptcy in late 2019, and were made for the purposes of creating the game engines and assets needed to revive the classic Mario rpg formula for future titles in order to fill the void that M&L left. I can't wait to see what's next!

I really really really wish the extreme excitements included Mallow and Geno returning many, many more times majorly as they meet, befriend, and team up with Mario, Bowser, and Peach again following Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. I wish it was not true only if it is true the game is the only time Mallow and Geno are seen majorly forever and ever. They were some characters. Whatever happens next, I am never ever giving up. In the next future I know there will be even more excitements like the ones of 2023.

I cant help but think Alpha Dream would have lived if they moved to the Switch. Weather with ports or a new entry, they would have made bank. There was no reason to make a 3ds game when the switch was well into its life span.

Due to Dream Team underperforming(selling only 2.43 million), and the massive budget that game had, Alpha dream started having financial troubles, Paper jam was rushed for a december 2015 release with many reused assets a very simple story and being very buggy (likely due to the mandates). Paper Jam barely sold a million and since It,s likely that Alphadream did not have the money to be able to make a Hd, Switch Mario and luigi, they basically decided to reuse yet more 3d assets to make the 2 remakes. It,s likely Alpha Dream knew they were doomed, so at least they wanted one last hurrah in 2019 instead of a slow, painfull demise.

Hopefully with the remakes selling well, it should give a clear indication to Nintendo that fans want to see the Mario RPG franchises strive with success in terms of creativity, charm, uniqueness, and scope. If Nintendo can do that moving forward, then it would not only make the fans happier but also draw in more newcomers and have them check out what those games can be.

I agree. The Mario RPG'S died out on me after Bowser's Inside Story and before Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle brought me back. Starting at the early 2010's, both Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games started dying out on me because either they weren't as intriguing as there predecessors, playing it too safe enough or there changing them cause they think they played the same, even though there totally different from either other; in that case, Paper Mario: Sticker Star. The only good Mario game that came out during that era is the remake of Superstar Saga. But even that game gets controversial cause of those that grew up with the original and complaint that it wasn't as good as the original. So yeah. It was an rough year for Mario RPG'S. And than there Kingdom Battle. And like many people when I saw the early footage, I was confused & suspicious in what is happening. But once the trailer was shown on the gameplay and everything the show offers, I was pretty hooked. Got it when the game came out and it became one of my favorite Mario RPG'S in an long time. They add Donkey Kong Adventure as DLC and was fun. Than 5 years later, we got Sparks of Hope and it was an great sequel to an already an great game. If it weren't for Mario + Rabbids, I would've been done with Mario RPG'S and so glad they exist whether you like these games or not. And now we got 2 remake of the most influential Mario RPG games ever made and it just brings the quality of Mario RPG'S back to where it all started and I hope it continues that trend. Sorry for the long comment. Just wonna get it out of my chest.

Controversial opinion but, to be honest as much as i like the mario and luigi series, i don't want it to make a comeback. I feel like that was part of the reason the paper mario series got shafted and turned into a barebones action adventure game, because Nintendo was like "well we cant have 2 mario rpg series at the same time so make mario and luigi the rpg and change paper mario" cause after the mario and luigi series ended they finally gave us a ttyd remake. (I'm not counting oragami king cause they were most likely still in the middle of making it when alphadream went bankrupt). I like the mario and luigi series alot, and i know other people love it, but i love rpg paper mario so much more and thats the series i want to stay and go back to its roots

Yeah I would be okay with m&l dying off if it means Paper Mario can have more ambitious rpgs. Superstar Saga is the ideal mario rpg in my eyes and even ttyd doesnt top it in that respect but I think Paper Mario just has so much more potential with the worldbuilding and characters.

They’re bringing back the Paper Mario and Mario RPG not the fact there’s a chance we’re getting a sequel for Mario RPG. also, what if Nintendo actually got the people from Alpha Dream when they got bankrupt and put them in a certain studio of theirs so they could make a Mario & Luigi game we have no clue if they did that or not. Mario RPG‘s are coming back and it’s good to see them back. Finally we’re getting Paper Mario back to the way It was. Mario RPG is getting a Remake, which is amazing heck Mario & Luigi might get a new game. We don’t know if it’s going to get a Remake. Super Paper Mario is outright the best story in any mario game without contest (not that people play mario games for their story) and Count Bleck I think deserves at least one of the top three spots of villains in the mario series. The game is not flawless but it is an excellent story

I always enjoy the Mario RPG'S more than the mainline ones. Not to say the mainlines ones are bad. Heck no. Most of them are great and I'm looking forward to Super Mario Bros. Wonders. But I always liked the more approach of the story, as well as an intriguing & more engaging gameplay wise that they brought in to expand the franchise. It's also one of the few RPG games that's simple and easy for me to play than the likes of Final Fantasy, Persona and other well known RPG series that's more overcomplex & overcomplicated in which I couldn't get into.

TTYD and Super Mario RPG represent to me the revival of pre-"blue ocean" Nintendo. Really, the whole switch era...but TTYD was the final nail in the coffin for the era of shallow gimmick centric-thinking that disappointed Nintendo fans to no end. If the next console is blue oceanish again this comment will not age well lol

I'd personally kill for an M&L collection, be it all 3DS games (as in the remakes with a brand new one for PiT, as well as DT and PJ) or the original 5. It'd be the best way, in my opinion, to bring the series back and generate interest for a 6th entry. I'd even take just a Partners in Time remake too. It's the one that needs it the most and like I said on a different video from yours, Nintendo gets weird about having the original and remake on the same console. The logic here being that Superstar Saga is already in NSO, so there couldn't be another release of it but PiT would be fair game. I kinda didn't like Sparks of Hope. The battle system is fantastic but exploring the world is so slow and awkward, to the point that I dropped it because I got bored and frustrated. I'm considering picking it back up though.

Still don't think it is really a resurgance if the majority of the RPG's are remakes. Prove they can make another timeless classic without the guiderails of an old game people already love and that will truly be a resurgance

@@SuperMarioT no he didn’t, I looked it up on Super Mario Wiki. Just a mii costume in Wii U/3DS and Ultimate along with a Spirit in the latter. However, Sakurai did state that he wanted him in Brawl as a playable fighter but couldn’t probably due to Square Enix owning the character
