Considering Leo Fender's last place of employment was with G&L in which he fixed a ton of things like engineering the bridge completely different. I would say the Fender Strat is subpar in the eyes of the guy who invented it. There was enough wrong with the original design to make Leo want to address some of the quirks and kinks. That was his reasoning, not mine. So if you want the best playing guitar and one that Leo was actually proud of then its G&L not Fender. If it says "Stratocaster" on it then it is broken according to the standard of Leo Fender.

Thanks for taking me back to the early 60's surf band era. I was on the front lines back then playing bass for several So Cal surf bands. I've caught several of your covers but haven't seen any Dick Dale stuff (Misirlou, Hava Nagilla, Let's Go Trippin, Surf Beat) or some of the stuff that became known as surf music even though that wasn't it's initial inspiration. Boss by the Rumblers comes to mind and not to overlook the early stuff by the Fireballs (Bulldog, Torquay, Footpatter) plus Caterpillar Crawl, original by the Strangers...covered by the LIvely Ones. All of these were staples with every band I played with and they all allow for personal interpretation. I'd love to hear you guys cover some of these.

It probably does, it's from when things were made to last. But you couldn't actually use it, cos the system is digital. They could wire up their own system in the house & clubhouse. I had a railway historian pal who collected trackside telephones from the abandoned Erie Railroad in Indiana, along w/110v AC to 12v DC transformers he got from abandoned interlocking towers he raided, & in the 80's & 90's, he had them in both floors of the house, the basement, & the non-attached garage. They had cranks instead of dials, cos they were on the railroad's dispatch system, not connected to the normal phone network. If his wife needed something & he was in the garage, she just cranked the kitchen phone & he'd answer the garage phone. Bear in mind that this was 1980-2002, before cell phones, so it was a neat thing to have. In winter, for example, she didn't have to get all dressed up to go say things in the garage, just crank the phone. When he moved to his 10-acre ranch in the boondocks, he installed the system there, where the house & garage were 200 feet apart. The basement & kitchen phones were connected to that, as usual. There, he also had a parallel system using 1950's-60's pay phones.

Nicole I love your guitar. I bought an American Standard new in 2008 and it's perfect. I also inherited my brother's mim strat. It was a great feeling guitar but sounded buzzy with the ceramic pickups. I found a loaded pick guard with all new, vintage pieces. The pickups are Flying Mojo Purple haze. There was a family that had a contract with Fender in the mid 60's making pickups. When CBS bought Fender they lost the contract. All the parts to make the pickups got stored and forgotten until a few years ago. The bobbins, wire all of it. So these pickups are 1960's Fender. Just assembled recently.

And if Sarah should present her Danelectro-Longhorn-bass: I don't know if she still owns an upright-bass. Maybe she could play as introduction on an upright-bass, which she played in "The Millwinders" to show where she comes musically from. She is listed with baritone-sax on the Millwinders's album "Ladies and Gentleman". If she owns a baritone-sax she certainly could play some bass-lines with it. Playing upright-bass and maybe baritone-sax would be nice to have :-).
