Today we are showing you how we create one of our favourite handmade soaps, a simple, natural, Goats Milk soap scented with pure Lavender essential oil.
We will be using the cold process method and showing you how we incorporate the milk into our lye water solution in a way that ensures it does not scorch or burn.
Goat's milk is a fantastic addition to soap and we personally find that it helps to create a really mild, gentle soap. I sometimes suffer with sensitive skin and when I do, my Goat's Milk soap is my personal go to bar (but note that we cannot make any claims that it is beneficial for sensitive skin as to do so would be classed as making cosmetic claims, which is not allowed in teh UK without proper testing).
It is a good idea to have some prior knowledge of cold process soap making before attempting to create milk soaps as they are a little trickier to get right than regular soaps, however, with a little practice and careful checks on things like temperature they can be really satisfying to create.
If you wish to have a go at this design, you will need the following ingredients (the weights given below will give enough batter to fill one of the standard 5lb loaf moulds that we use in this video):
218g Sodium Hydroxide
218g Water
218g Frozen Goats Milk
680g Olive Oil
198g Sweet Almond Oil
114g Castor Oil
368g Coconut Oil
150g Shea Butter
76g Cocoa Butter
40g Lavender Essential Oil
0.4g Ultramarine Violet Oxide Powder

This is a gorgeous soap. I always envy American and Canadian soapers for being able to sell unique soaps since they don't have to go through the assessment process

Oh yes Beth, I am very envious of the US soapers being able to experiment with different colours and scents and then sell them. I understand the assessment rules and the need for them, but I do wish they offerred a little more flexibility in terms of colours and scents.

I guess the grass is greener, 😅I admire your country's standards and it feels like you have better quality soaps. On top of that, no casual horror stories of people on Etsy buying soap and getting burnt by undissolved lye or seeing posters on forums asking questions about selling soap they clearly have no clue about...

Hi, firstly thank you for your videos they are really helping me and my wife to get our heads around everything 🙌🏼 I do have a burning question I was hoping you could help with. I am trying to get my head around soap calc and thought I'd nailed it but when I added these ingredients the water and lye amounts didn't match 218g they were 253g? I added the goats milk to the list of oils and fats under milk (any bovine) and put the water to lye % to 1.0000:1 since it is 218g - 218g. I didn't want to just reduce the amount of water and lye I used when making the batch as I didn't think I should deviate from the recipe as calculated on soapcalc. Any help is hugely appreciated

Love your video's! I am new to soap making, and a little unsure of whether normal tap water can be used, or even bottled spring water, rather than distilled, which seems impossible to find in the UK. I did use de ionised, and my first batch came out ok!! looking forward to attempt this goats milk recipie 🤞

not sure if you found an answer to your question or not...I have used bottled water I think it was the nestle brand water, but I found distilled water in the "drink" aisle of my local grocery store...right across from the sodas and cocktail mixers...as for tap water? I can not say as have never used it, since I don't know how all the chemicals that they put in the water will react with everything...hope this helps!

If you freeze the water content too helps keep it cooler when adding the lye
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany 2 жыл бұрын
It certainly would. We didn't freeze the water more out of habit as we never normally use frozen water for making our lye solution but freezing would certainly help keep it cooler

I love how you take your time to explain things.I am new by soap maker. I’m still trying to learn percentages. My first 3 batches were a big fail. But I’m set on using goats milk. I see that the amount of grahams you made made a large batch. Can you tell me the percentage amount you used so I can try to scale in down to a smaller batch size please? I can kind of see what you used the most of, but I would like to us a smaller mold, just need to know the percentage amount. If you don’t mind.

Please don’t use any guess work making your soap creations, see the full ingredients of this recipe in the comments section below the video. Then add these figures into the SoapCal webpage (and do use it every time you’re making a recipe, yours or someone else’s. The more you refer to it the more your will understand what looks like a very busy website but that calculates well what you will need). Change the oil quantity to what you want to be using eg 400g for a small mould. Ann doesn’t show the percentages here only the grams, but run these through the soap calculator and the percentage column will be beside the gram column on the right side. Reducing the oil ingredients she uses for your soap, keeping the same percentages, the recipe stays the same with your choice of grams (be it 400g or whatever). The total soap batch for the mould may be around 500-550g with the added Lye Solution, milk and additives in it. The soap calculation will tell you all. Having three failed batches behind you, were you actually calculating a balanced recipe ingredients and precisely?

In another of your videos you added the frozen goats milk to the lye water. Is there a reason on this one you add the lye to the goats milk and water? Or is it just personal preference? Thank you

Lovely video! ❤️ ☺️ As you're using water and milk, is a preservative needed? Also if you wanted to sell such a bar of soap, is there a legal requirement to add a preservative?
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany 2 жыл бұрын
No, a preservative is neither needed or required for cold process soaps. The high alkalinity and fact the soap goes through saponification prohibits bacterial growth and negates the need for a preservative.

Question: Do you need to use Polysorbate 80 when using Mica powders?
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany

No, not when making soaps. As long as you don't use way too much mica you shouldn't have any issues with the colours staining.

I do not have goats so where would be a good,place to get goats milk. Would a powder goats milk work if made into ice cubes?
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany Жыл бұрын
We don't have Goats either (though I would love to if we had the space and time to care for them!) It is worth looking for Goats milk in small independent shops or even farms that are local to you. If you can't source any that way, you could even use supermarket Goats milk - just make sure that it is 100% pure though and hasn't had anything else added into it :-) I can't see why powdered Goats milk wouldn't work (as long as it is free from additives) We are planning on doing a soap soon using powdered coconut milk, so the process should be quite similar.
