Great idea, Sonny! If you do have the opportunity to test again under better conditions, I also recommend doing a additional day where you 15 reps in the same suit with the same rest as for your multi-suit test (ideally taking the suit on and off each time, though with it being wet, this might end up being an impossible amount of work). I think you should know (1) your expected time variability between repeat reps to know what time difference between suits is significant and (2) how neural fatigue affects things throughout the day (even with 30 minutes or so, I'm sure your nerves are getting roasted by going all out for 9-10 seconds many times).
@TheSwimsuitGuy21 күн бұрын
Yes all great points. If I was to do in one day I was going to test in a brief again to compare to first rep and see how much drop off. The reality is you’ll never get a perfect test. I think the closest is to do over a day with 30 odd minds between reps for full recovery. I bet even with this video my stroke count won’t be the same on every 25 etc. Also my start was funky in the first pool as my the bars on blocks got in my head.

How is this a real test?? It’s 25s, no repeated attempts, and it looks like it’s on the same day. The only true way to test this is with multiple swimmers, on multiple days. No posting of reaction times either, which could easily make or break this whole test. Why are you not going off a reaction pad? It would at least pull one of the biggest variables away. Dating myself now but I learned how to setup a basic science experiment in 6th grade, 20 years ago. Way too many variables here. This isn’t a test at all, it’s neat, but no.

if you are going to do it again, you need to do more than 1 dive 25 per suit, and a much larger sample size for the brief. I suspect each of these would be within the variability of your times in the brief. I'm not arguing that tech suits do not provide a performance advantage, simply that there are so many other confounding factors to try and account for, that the path to improved times is paved with the small boring things (sleep, nutrition, mental ork etc.).

I must object…. 1. I am not used to yards and think the time being used to figure it out could have allowed me to get faster. 2. I was equally as fresh in the Primo day 2 and the pool was the same. 3. A lot of factors in these tests were not great but I don’t think me being physically fresh for rep 1 was the reason that shit was the fastest (was technically 2nd 25 of the day and the Primo day 2 was first so I was fresher)

Great video, but I think an even better way to get more reliable results would be to do three or five runs in each suit, and then compare the average times. I’d also personally love to see you do this test for triathlon swim skins, as I have no idea which ones are actually fast, and I don’t know if anyone else knows either. Plus it would be a great way to expand your channel by bridging over to the triathlon community 😉 a swim suit is a swim suit.
@TheSwimsuitGuy21 күн бұрын
Corrr its a hard task considering doing this again (which I need to do properly) but let alone 3-5x in each suit. To be honest the biggest issue in repeating and the reason I done in Flagstaff to begin with is that pools are not big fans of filming. In my local pool I have signed the permits to film etc but it is still dependent on what is happening in the pool (school lessons means no filming etc). On top of that I would have to hire a lane to be able to dive. Thats why somewhere like Gloria was a haven for me making videos. I hope to return there and if I do I will make sure i have every suit with me, maybe a brand new one for fairness. For triathlons you would ideally have to swim 1500 in each suit or at least a 100 ahah, but the longer you swim the more rest you would need and the more pacing variables would influence results. TBH i wanted to make a fun video, I think I achieved that but would love to make something a little more data driven which I am also a nerd for.
@inntw488921 күн бұрын
Yeah i completely get that with filming at pools, it would be literally impossible for me where i train, and I didn’t even think about the blocks. But also fair play to you, it was a very fun and entertaining video, I watched it the whole way through with a lot of interest in the times even though I’ve got no interest in buying a pair of these (those prices are also eye watering!). But half way through I couldn’t help but feel fatigue would be playing a factor in the results, and I also thought it was interesting that no one else on KZbin has done anything like this before, and of course who better to do it than you. It’s a lot more common in cycling and running - people like to compare how much time a certain race wheel, or running shoe is going to save them over another. If you were to do this again - and I think you should ;) - I would suggest you test no more than two shorts per video, like a head to head, plus a third pair as a baseline which is your Arena Icon briefs, to see how much faster you are in the race shorts compared to the icons on that particular day. This way you could do 3-5 repeats in each shorts for a reliable average time, it wouldn’t take you anywhere near as long to test, you wouldn’t be so fatigued, and yet i guarantee people would be very interested in the results. You could essentially get another ten or so videos out of this one, with better results. As for the triathlon suits, I would do exactly the same, but with intervals of 100m, which would be more than enough to indicate which would be faster over longer distances, and by how much. Get to it lad, I’ll definitely be tuned in! 😉🍿

There seems to be something fashion or aesthetic about men tech swim suits. I see many kids adults and even club swimmers ( not top level swimmers) wear them when they are actually training for an hour. As if they do not want to be seen wearing briefs. I understand that they make a difference in a race. They also last longer if only used for races. Do you find them comfortable for a full training session? In this respect girls are totally opposite. Hardly anyone wears one for training.
@dg530121 күн бұрын
The suits you're seeing are standard textile jammers rather than tech suits. They can look similar to a tech suit, but they have way less compression, no buoyancy, no specialized taping to assist the glutes & hamstrings, and don't repel water or have special textures to reduce drag. They cost from about 1/6 to 1/10 the price of a tech suit. Where I live & train (East coast, US), I'd say jammers are most popular with men over 25 who swim on their own, especially if they didn't previously swim competitively. Briefs are more popular in masters groups, but some of the older guys will wear jammers. Some kids will use them early on in club swimming, but all wear briefs once they get more advanced.
@TheSwimsuitGuy21 күн бұрын
Men wear jammers but not tech suits. They can be long lasting and mostly for swimmers not liking the look of briefs.
