Sherlock Holmes probably, but your Marvel pick could easily be Racenclaw. The defensive use of Edmond Dantes is complete mischaracterization. Edmond is at the start brave, friendly and naive; and mostly likely a Hufflepuff or Gryffindor. it is only through the training of Faria that he learns to be as cunning and determined as he becomes. While all of Dante's enemies also show Slytherin type qualities as well... though Fernand's temper and passion could be characterized as a Gryffindor trait.

The main problem is Rowling's own views on morality. She clearly personally thinks most, if not all, evil in the world is done out of ambition and cowardice, and so very rarely considers how the other house's key characteristics could be perverted into motivations for doing evil. Would it be so hard to write an evil Ravenclaw, an evil Gryffindor, or even an evil Hufflepuff? An evil Ravenclaw would be a person who values the pursuit of knowledge over ethical concerns. Basically the mad scientist archetype, conducting experiments on people - perhaps even "for the greater good." An evil Hufflepuff would be a person whose loyalty blinds them to being truly empathetic. Basically any prejudiced religious person who thinks that in-group = moral uprightness. And pray we never see an evil Gryffindor. Bravery can be a terrible thing if unhinged from a moral compass. Basically the Joker is a prime example of an evil Gryffindor. He's brave enough to do whatever he thinks is funny but has no regard for morals or even rationality.

Whoa, I literally just posted something very similar on my facebook. Even used the Mad Scientist analogy. Joker is perfect as an example. Doctor Octavius for Ravenclaw. Hufflepuff, Todd from Breaking Bad. He is absolutely loyal to his family without a shred of empathy for those he kills. Walter White could maybe qualify but he's far more selfish.

There are ravenclaw villains the very first dada teachers in the series, and for hufflepuff well there aren't villains stated to be hufflepuff but she has said that that's the house she admires the most, the closest thing we get in te series is Zacharias Smith, Who proved that hufflepuffs can be assholes too, the funny thing is that I think hufflepuff and Slytherin are the houses that resemble the most

I'm trying to think of a Slytherin character Rowling wrote who has a happy family life. Voldemort's mother raped his father with a love potion. Snape's father was abusive. Draco's parents were Death Eaters. Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff characters often are shown with supportive, loving parental figures (not exclusively, but often). I identify with Slytherin characters because I come from a dysfunctional family. Many people do. I know as well as anyone that a brutal, do-whatever-it-takes attitude comes from surviving trauma. Slytherins are survivors!

Slytherins, like serpents, are misunderstood. Snakes get a bad rep for being symbols of evil, cunning and craftiness but they are also symbols of wisdom, healing and rebirth. Remember what the snake was tempting Eve with in the Garden of Eden; knowledge. They value intelligence like Ravenclaws but utilise it differently. Ravenclaws value intelligence and learning for their own sake but Slytherins use these traits to their advantage, as tools to get what they want. So they're a house of ambitious hard workers. Draco is also a good representation of the snake being a symbol for rebirth. He may initially be bad or at least be on the path towards darkness but in the end, he chooses the right side and is born anew, much like how a snake would shed its skin. Slytherins also tend to be perceived as treacherous much like their animal symbol but the truth is, Slytherins are very loyal, a characteristic they share with Hufflepuffs. Slytherins always look after their own and stick together. That kind of camaraderie may be harder to find in the more competitive houses such as Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. The Slytherin part of the Hogwarts motto is "do what is necessary" and we see some Slytherins in the story make the ultimate sacrifice in order to do what is necessary. As the video mentions Snape willing to be perceived as a villain to do good, Leta Lestrange gives her own life to defend Newt and his brother in the battle with Grindlewald in the second Fantastic Beasts movie. Like Snape, Leta was bullied by those who expected the worst from her because of her family and the House she was sorted into. Slytherins don't have an image problem, the other Houses have a prejudice problem. I say all this as a proud Hufflepuff who has an equally proud Slytherin sister. :)

@JNike This is only true if you accept the religious interpretation as correct. God wanted Adam and Eve to remain ignorant so only he would know good and evil. If you are a lover of knowledge and science then the story takes on a darker meaning. It becomes about a supreme being who wants to keep all knowledge for himself and keep his creations subservient and ignorant. Wanting knowledge is not an evil act but if you are religious, it is because religious organisations, like their God, want to keep followers ignorant and dependent on the organisation for how to live their lives. It's all about control, Knowledge sets you free.

Gotta love the dumb as a brick jocks or class clowns that get to be teachers pet and get away with practically failing but "somehow" get passing grades or better in their fave teachers class. Get extensions on homework because they are lazy ect. Slughorn at least focused on good qualities like hard work, intelligence , and talent and didnt just go based on personality . sure he added famous people but thats different than popularity in school ( most had powerful parents, so it wasnt even their own fame , just by proxy)

I mean look at crabbe goyle and malfoy they turned against hogwarts. Who's to say the other slytherins wouldnt have helped Voldemort as well?
@brainlessbio
@brainlessbio 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, that's incorrect. I think you've mistaken the movie scene for the book scene. McGonagall in the last book (Chapter 31: The battle of Hogwarts) is in fact evacuating the school, so she says: “-evacuation will be overseen by Mr. Filch and Madam Pomfrey. Prefects, when I give the word, you will organize your House and take your charges, in an orderly fashion, to the evacuation point.” “If you are of age, you may stay,” "[...] I must ask you, therefore, to move quickly and calmly, and so as your prefects-” Then, Voldemort interrupts her when he speaks inside everyones minds. Pansy screams about handing Harry over and McGonagall invites HER to leave first, then the students from Slytherin house. “Thank you, Miss Parkinson,” said Professor McGonagall in a clipped voice. “You will leave the Hall first with Mr. Filch. If the rest of your House could follow.” Keep in mind, she's not excluding Slytherins or anything like that, she said earlier that anyone who's an adult can stay. As you can see by the fact that she proceeds to call the other houses name so they can follow the Slytherins. “Ravenclaws, follow on!” cried Professor McGonagall. But...only the Slytherin table was empty at the end (: Which means they didn't want to help. Not a single one of them. Ravenclaw students stayed, so did Hufflepuffs, but not Slytherins. 'Slowly the four tables emptied. The Slytherin table was completely deserted, but a number of older Ravenclaws remained seated while their fellows filed out; even more Hufflepuffs stayed behind, and half of remained in their seats, '

But his own conscience was most important and he understood how evil Voldemort could be after knowing about the horcrux. He didn't want people to suffer in the hands of someone so evil n so invincible. So he made a big big sacrifice of his life. Respected the life of his house elf so much that took the pain potion himself, died trying to save the Innocents of the wizarding world n he accepted the death. He went ahead knowing the outcome would kill him or anyway he'd be killed by Voldemort even if he survives the cave. A young guy taught about pureblood supremacy whole life makes the conscious decision to sacrifice his life so that a pureblood supremacist can't become invincible n harm Innocents. He had no good moral compass influencers in his surroundings his parents n siblings all supported Voldemort n we're proud of him joining death eaters. Sirious was no longer living with them. Yet the young guy had it in himself to realise how evil the dark side is and has the courage n moral sense to want to correct it. He's the best Slytherin imo

draco deserved better. in the first year when he met harry and asked to be his friend, he wanted harry to say yes because he admired harry so much. he was young and forming your own opinions apart from your parents is something every person at his age does but also to be in a family with so much pressure and very traditional opinions that are rarely questioned, makes what he said in the movies make more sense. he joins the death eaters out of fear and the thought that he can't do anything differently. this starts to be explored in the half blood prince in the bathroom scene but it is quickly screwed up by jk. after the battle of hogwarts (which, btw, is almost ruined for me bc the whole no slytherins helped thing is obviously very biased by jk) when draco is together with his mother and father its (i believe) stated that they probably wanted to just stay alive. there are so many things that point to draco not being as bad as described at all and even though jk points out multiple times that people aren't black and white, her points are kind of lost because while she keeps saying this she never explores story lines that show this well. the only one she ever really explores is snape and even that's not that well done. this is just my opinion rly and its kinda stupid bc i get so riled up about this even though its just a series of books & movies lol but it could've been done a lot better

@@cherry7590 It's probably because the death eaters were mostly their relatives or family friends if not their parents. Idk about you guys but I wouldn't fight my mom in the battefield. I'll be hesistant hence I could get hurt. What's the point of joining a war if you won't fight in it? Plus, most children in the Slytherin house are traditional and most likely pure-blooded, thus they would probably value family rather than morals. Not to mention that one of Slytherin's traits is self-preservation so it's kinda understandable why they won't or be hesitant to fight. While it may be true that some students are willing to fight righteously, the teachers thought it was best to just hoard them all in one group given JK's impression of the Slytherin's "evil" nature. Don't get me wrong, I'm Slytherin, myself, but I kinda understand where the teachers are coming from. It's basically to just avoid adding more to the death eater army.

I find it funny that JK's "good" Slytherin characters always redeemed themselves through griffyndorish courage, not through their own prized qualities. I still have yet to find a Slytherin character whose very core qualities is what shaped their world for the better (like in real life as said by this video). Though I understand that JK values courage and that is the virtue that she wants to impart to the readers/viewers. PS: Case in poinrt: RAB, whom i see as a heroic slytherin who had story potential (esp in light of book 7) than what he was given in the books. In canon, He died with courage and redeemed himself through it (and that is heroic) but if JK wanted to show that Slytherin cunningness and self-preservation is just as good as Griffyndorish courage and honour, she could have RAB survive his ordeal in the cave and hid throughout the years until Voldemort's ressurrection (a slytherin quality). I think a surviving RAB will put the Slytherin qualities to shine and will be that unknown wild card in book 5-7 esp with his knowledge on horcruxes (how frustrating it is when you go hunt for horcruxes only to find out that half of them were taken by this mysterious RAB?)

I don't think you're being fair. In the entire story, clearly Rowling wants us to realise that strongest qualities are moral courage, and loyalty, over anything else. So when anybody does anything good, they tend be courageous and/or loyal and thus to us readers, they seem "Gryffindorish" (or "Hufflepuffish"). Slytherin's highlight quality is cunningness and ambition, and both are very...unreliable qualities. When somebody is ambitious and cunning, you never know if they'll turn on you (which is why the best house to have a friend from is Hufflepuff, and imo Hufflepuff is the true anti-Slytherin). But the real question is, why do we consider ANY sort of bravery to be Gryffindorish? Gryffindor's hallmark bravery is often cited to be reckless and relentless. But Slytherin's bravery, is different. Slytherin's Snape didn't outright act recklessly. He bid his time, became a double agent, and was thus far more valuable in defeating Voldemort. A gryffindor would probably just go and try to attack Voldemort headfast, which would be pretty stupid to do when a wizard is at the peak of his power. Slytherin's RAB didn't outright face Voldemort when he realised that Voldemort's aims don't align with his. Instead, he did so in a way that Voldemort would be tricked, misled (hallmark of Slytherin's cunningness used for good in this case). Slytherins' Narcissa Malfoy doesn't act foolhardy. She bids her time. The biggest evil most Slytherins have consistently had to overcome are themselves. And even the four most Slytherin-like Gryffindors (imo), ie Harry, Sirius, Peter and Percy, all had to overcome their own darknesses more than anything else (in Harry's case, quite literally so). Slytherins like Snape, Draco, Narcissa, Slughorn, RAB, all first overtook their own darknesses. Once they've done that, they are practically indistinguishable from Gryffindors except in their subtlety. --- sincerely, from a proud Gryffindor.

And everyone else has to deal with that for the next twenty chapters.

Has anyone ever considered the thought of the 4 houses representing the 4 elements? Gryffindor is Fire, Hufflepuff is Earth, Ravenclaw is Air and Slytherin is Water. This is even represented in their dorm locations. The Gryffindor common room is supposed to be the warmest looking with lots of fire places. Hufflepuff is located near the kitchen (food = earth). Ravenclaws are located in the highest tower, as far as I remember, and Slytherins are down in the dungeons beneath the black lake. They even have this aquarium like wall. Even the characteristics of the elements would fit. Fire is impulsive, but warm(hearted). Earth is grounded and natural. Air stands for freely living minds. Water is calm and strong at the same time and always finds its way. And in witchcraft there are also special crafts representing the elements. Fire - transformation/creation (McGonagall is teacher for transformation) Earth - spells including plants and herbs (Sprout is teaching herbology) Air - all kind of spells (Flitwick, technically) Water - potion making (Snape) The house mascots fit as well. Just a thought tho :D Edit: I've read a few comments that said JKR could have actually confirmed this already 🤔 if it is so, my bad 😅 I'm neither on Twitter nor permanently on the Internet.

Richard Whereat Well that brought us to Slytherins defining traits, here is how I imagined them: Those who are not brainwashed by the racist, entitled nazi ideas are likely the true Slytherins who took pride in their status but are sane about it. Because of their ambitious, conservative and prideful nature, it is unlikely for them to selflessly stand up against unjust, to them this is reckless and foolish for it will bring the trouble to themselves when the unjust was not directed to them in the first place. They might not agree with with the death eater wannabes and think they are crazy but most of them won’t openly go against them because their families behind them have long histories of interactions and connections (pure blood families, like ancient period noble families, tend to linked by marriage and other interests so things will get complicating, I actually hope Rowling expand on this) so they need to maintain at least a surface level harmony. However, these students are sheltered in Hogwarts and it is unlikely that they’ve experienced the horror of the death eater campaign first hand, if these fraction of non-death eater wannabes got a real sense of the horror of Voldemort’s campaign, I doubt they will remain silent then. They might be prideful, snobby, and apathetic, but in front of true destructive evil, they will make the right choice, a great example being Regulus Black. To tell the truth, a Slytherin will never be a hero or a “good” person, but they have the potential to be a compelling, complex character that we can root for.

If your goals involve helping people and having a positive impact on the world then succeeding would be an obvious good thing: no one sees a surgeon with a 98% success rate and says, "way too many of this guy's patients are surviving -- the monster!" By the same token, there's nothing inherently noble about throwing oneself into danger. Certainly there are many times when great courage is necessary to be able to help people, (be it others or yourself), but if you're just lobbing yourself out there, without any real inkling of improving the situation, you're not even really trying to help anyone -- you're just trying to make yourself feel better.

it really bothers me how rowling perceives morality. she seems to believe that pretty much all evil is done out of ambition and wimpiness, and that all slytherin’s are the same. which is of course absolutely wrong. being a slytherin myself i don’t believe in following traditions (pure blood’s are superior etc) like the majority of slytherin’s we see in the books and movies. i prefer to be open to new ideas and changes. she also seems to give us zero redeemable characters other than snape, and hates the fact that we love draco so much. but she doesn’t understand that draco is one of the most relatable characters in the book series; feeling pressure by his parents like most teenagers. rowling gives gryffindors, ravenclaws and (sometimes) hufflepuffs all this love, but would it have really been so difficult to throw in an evil gryffindor/ravenclaw/hufflepuff? i know gryffindor has peter pettigrew, but his role was small and it’s often pushed under the rug when gryffindors are being talked about. however the first person people think of when slytherin’s are mentioned is almost always either draco or voldemort. it certainly isn’t a good look, and it easily gives the other houses something to use against us. ravenclaws have lockhart? i guess? but he’s mostly, if not always, forgotten about. basically, i wish she had given slytherin’s more love, and not outright hated them.

I've always hated how it was basically the fandom's job to justify for Slytherin. Like as an author JK Rowling basically just made everyone believe that Slytherins were evil and never specified that this is a good person and they are in Slytherin. We're just scrambling for names here at this point. - A pissed off Slytherin who doesn't like that everyone assumes that we're fucking evil.

I disagree. I mean at first Harry's only references are Hagrid, Ron , two people he trusts who are notoriously anti Slytherin. The first Slytherin he met was Draco, and Snape. Neither are likely to make a good first impression. However with each entry we're proven wrong. For example, Snape was trying to cast a counter spell. And the villain was a Ravenclaw. It was a pure blood Gryffindor who opened the chamber of secrets. It was Ginny, not any Slytherin Peter pettigrew, the villain was a Gryffindor not Slytherin Once again Pettigrew played a key part in Voldemort having a new body. R.A. B! Need I say more Professor Slughorn, as abusive Snape was ,he did play a part in saving the wizarding world. Astoria Green grass, a pure blood Slytherin who actually led to Draco stop being a bratty jerk. And of course Harry's character development. He went from not Slytherin to house Slytherin will have gained an excellent young wizard. In fact the ghost of house Slytherin was a tragic and misunderstood figure. He committed suicide because in his anger he killed his mentor's daughter.The chains he wraps himself in are his way of punishing himself for all eternity.

@@achyuththouta6957 I would sort him more into Slytherin. He is very persistent, has the ambition to always create greater and greater technology (which is both ravenclaw and slytherin to be fair), he developed a lot throughout the series, going from an egocentric asshole millionaire to a saver of the universe, which honestly reminds me a little bit of Snape (though I personally think Tony is a way better person than him) and as we could see in endgame, he only dared himself to do something as reckless as time-travel after he found out that it could potentially work, which is way more Slytherin than Gryffindor. For me, Tony is the prime example of a good Slytherin. Sort of a grey area, but all over a well-meaning person.

especially the movies show the Slytherin charaters (especially the students of Slytherin house) mostly very one-dimensional. If the characteristisc of the house mean their members go for greatness, are cunning and determined, this must imply that they are also clever and intelligent because you probably won't reach anything great without brains. And most film characters seem rather dumb which doesn't really make sense. Apart from that most Slytherin students have deliberate unpleasant looks, as if nasty people automatically look unpleasant and are always angry.

But the more I learned about Slytherin outside the black and white dichotomy of the novels, the more I began to identify with the house. I am loyal to the death to those who love me. I will work hard to succeed, especially to spite those who said I can’t. I hang back and analyze a situation instead of rushing in headfirst. And I’m not above using morally dubious tactics to reach my goals. I am a Slytherin and I am proud of my house.

This is how I imagined the best of the four houses: Gryffindor: a traditional hot-headed shounen manga/anime protagonist who have a strong faith in justice and face the powerful villain head on despite the disparity in power. Ravenclaw: a ingenious philosopher (along the lines of Socrates and Plato) who’s dedicated to and passionate about seeking knowledge about the world and has little desire for worldly wealth and fame. Hufflepuff: audience’s favorite perfect nice guy in traditional Korean drama who is always there for the heroine when she’s down (but will eventually be dumped by the heroine for the another guy) Slytherin: an ambitious schemer born into aristocracy who knows what he wants and knows how to use his higher status and the rules of the world to help him reach his ambition, but with a firm moral compass at heart.

Taking this elements we can theorize that probably Dumbledore was in the "wrong" house, just like Harry or Hermione, who decided to be in Gryffindor rather than Slytherin or Ravenclaw. Why I'm saying this? Because Dumbledore play a long game, with strategy and cold blodness against Grindewald during his youth and Voldermort during the time where the 7 books take place. We have to agreed on this, Dumbledore is a full Slytherin...
@erweber
@erweber 4 жыл бұрын
Dumbledore is also very generous, distributing points whenever possible, he's always willing to sacrifice himself for others and he often takes sides with the weak, besides possessing a phoenix. His strategy is not like a Slytherin's, that disregards the means to obtain an end, instead, he considers all sacrifices needed to be done into account. I think he's mostly Gryffindor. A strategist one, sure, but still a Gryffindor at heart.

Eddye Weber except for the fact that he sacrificed everyone around him to get what he wanted. That’s cunning. He pretty much bred Harry to die, and manipulated him in the books and only told him half truths to get him to act like he wanted. He wasn’t fair because he needed Harry to always be at Hogwarts - anyone else would have been expelled - and he would send him back to the Dursley’s knowing damn well he could’ve protected him himself. We also know that he was in Grindewalds side until he changed his mind and they were supposed to do all that “greater good” shit together. Until his sister got killed because of him. Dumbledore is def a very ambitious and cunning person. He’s also brave b that’s that.

@@erweber I think Dumbledore fits more with Slytherin than Gryffindor. I used to think the opposite when I was a young kid because my impression of him came from reading Harry's perspective of the sweet kindly old man worthy of nothing but hero worship. Then the books took off our rose coloured glasses and we got to see him for who he is as flaws and all. Him giving out points wasn't generous; he cheated other kids in other houses out of a year of hard earned points just so that his old house could win. Those kids studied hard to answer questions in class and practiced their work and tries to behave to win points for their house. Then Dumbledore shits on their hard work to award exactly the amount needed for Gryffindor to win despite knowing that it was unfair to the rest of the school and that he was awarding points for behaviour worthy of being expelled. I don't know about sacrificing himself for others either. I've seen him sacrifice himself when he knew he couldn't outrun death anyways and I've seen him put himself in harm's way against opponents weaker than him. I'd say one thing he had in common with Voldermort himself is that he took magical measures to avoid death...til he lived for over 6 centuries. Doesn't seem like the actions of a brave man to run from death century after century. Honestly siding with the weak could be any house including Slytherin. We don't need to be surrounded only by people with power and influence as long as we can amass it for ourselves. And lastly, Slytherins have been given a bad name in this series but there is no one type of Slytherin strategy. Once it achieves the desired goal, any strategy can work for us and Dumbledore certainly was a strategist even in the afterlife he was still moving chess pieces. Even the way he set up his final will and testament was some sneaky, cunning Slytherin level planning. Unfortunately, JKR approached the Houses idea in a very narrow-minded way that pigeonholed humanity in a way that wouldn't work in real life. As much as Dumbledore would make a great Slytherin, she has no idea how to write a main character from that house who isn't a slimy, criminal, bully or abuser. Her idea of the perfect grandfatherly figure could never be from the villain house because you just can't have ambition, strategy, gentleness and kindness inside you all at once. The way she wrote the Houses, her audience and Harry could never trust Dumbledore if he were an ex-Slytherin and that's how you know the writing lacked nuance when it came to Houses .

And for that he would do anything, destroy his children happiness, bring dishonor on himself and his house, break any laws of gods and men. There's even a theory, that Tywin knew about purple wedding, but desided not to do anything about it, because he would get rid of Joffrey, who's mad and uncontrolable, and Tyrion, who he hated so much.

iMADgoaway Tywin is a product of his time and society. If you look into his backstory, you can see why he becomes who he is. The fact that he is loyal to his house makes him quite Slytherin. He probably did know about the purple wedding and as you pointed out, may have wanted to use it to get rid of two birds with one stone. If that was the case, it was certainly a brilliant strategic move. He also wanted Jaime to be his heir and used Tyrions trial (as a result of Joffreys death) to try to get that and it almost worked. Lastly, I don't think his motives matter as much as the results. Westeros flourished when he was hand of the king irrespective of whether he did it for his house or the realm. His pragmatic resourceful political nature makes him a Slytherin. But being resourceful doesn't automatically make one bad. Margery Tyrell is also a slytherin and used her resourceful nature in other ways.

Everyone sees everyone in my house as racist, blood supremacists, bully's. The general connotation is that all slytherins are bad. Slytherins are evil. That is not the case. The same can be said for Gryffindor. They are seen as the brave, do-gooders who are perfect in every way. That is not the case. There can be bad griffindors. However their overall connotation is that they are perfect, they are the good guys. But as I said a few sentences ago that is not the case. As for you +Winter 117 you are not the only one who is friends with other houses. Let me start off by saying both of my parents are Ravenclaws and produced 3 slytherins (me, my brother, and my sister). I think the reason why people are easily intimidated by us Slytherins is because we have the qualities of all the other houses while still having our own. Let me explain: Gryffindor - we are definitely brave and know what is right, but we also know when we have been defeated or when the right time to step aside is. Ravenclaw - we are intelligent, wise and creative. We NEED these qualities to be able to plan for the future or be cunning, but we also know when we don’t have the answers and we are able to say “I don’t know what to do in this situation and I’m lost at sea” Hufflepuff - yes, we might be selfish at times, but in the end we would die and kill for the people we truly love and cherish. There is nothing we wouldn’t do for the people who are closest to our hearts. But apart from this we have our own qualities as well. We are cunning and fight for what we want; we are ambitious and determined and can reach our goals if we just try hard enough; we are self preserved and won’t let anyone put us down because we matter and we won’t take any shit; lastly, we like traditionalism, in routines and traditions are where we feel most comfortable because that’s when we know what will happen and that’s when we can feel control, because if there is something we hate it’s when we just stand there helpless, unable to fend for ourself and we don’t know what will happen But this does not make us the bad guys. We can use all these qualities for good things. We have trouble with school but wants to be a doctor? We will put in the effort and get there in the end even if it’s horrible going through the process of getting there. We have extreme phobias but live on our own in a completely new city where we don’t know anyone? We will make sure to go out and experience the world and challenge ourselves. We’re being bullied or struggle with mental health? We will keep fighting because nothing will get us down and we won’t ever loose if it can be avoided.

Previous video referred to Grindlewald as a Slytherin. Which he is not. Also I'm tired of people forgetting about Regulus Black, a very important hero in the books who happens to be Slytherin. Instead defenses of Slytherin tend to rely on Snape who, double agent or not, is just a bad dude. @clara oswald pointed out Andromeda Black as well, which I consider a good enough point to add to the original post.

He did good, sure, but that isn't a defense against the claim that not all Slytherins are bad guys. He did a good thing, but that doesn't change that he once bullied a fourteen year old girl into permanently altering her appearance, was the worst fear of one of his students, and let Sirius Black rot in Azkaban for years despite knowing full well that he was innocent. But none of that matters because boo hoo, he got bullied as a kid by someone who is an asshole, yet infinitely less so than he is.

I have always said that Slytherins have the greatest capacity for good. Determination, ambition, resourcefulness, and cleverness; none of these things are bad. I’d like to think Salazar Slytherin himself was more complex than we may have initially thought. He, unlike the other founders, believed pure blooded witches and wizards should attend Hogwarts. In the context of Harry’s story, this comes across as a hatred for half-bloods and Muggle borns, but the reality may be that Salazar wanted to protect both the wizarding world and the Muggle world. Given that the founders were born in the Medieval era, this seems very plausible, as magic would have been seen as devilry or witchcraft.

How about some positive examples like Dr. House? Also, you are probably correct. Sherlock Holmes is a Slytherin in the books too. Dr. Watson is most likely a Hufflepuff. @19mmch

I always place Sherlock (from the books) into Ravenclaw. He's textbook: obsessed with knowledge and displaying this knowledge to others, socially awkward and dismissive because it doesn't benefit him to make small talk unless he is gathering information, single-minded in his persuit of the answer to a problem. He doesn't solve a mystery because it benefits him or brings him fame and money; he's just showing off how much he knows and how much smarter he is than everyone else. He is pretty much every Ravenclaw when they get a bee in their bonnet about a topic or problem, including ignoring those around him and not eating well. He embodies the Ravenclaw traits to a fault. And Watson is definitely a Hufflepuff, which is a great 'house foil' to Ravenclaw.

@Lockjaw dude the word cunning literally refers to a specific kind of intelligence that helps you to achieve a goal. This is an important Slytherin trait because that ability to use intellect in that way is how we are able to fulfil our ambitions (the other important Slytherin trait). Both Ravenclaw and Slytherin value intelligence but in two different ways which is why two different though similar words are used to talk about our smarts. Ravenclaws' intellect comes from valuing knowledge for the sake of knowing more. Slytherin's intellect comes from valuing knowledge for the sake of applying it to strategies to achieve personal goals. You need to be clever to be cunning. We are less similar to Gryffindor or Hufflepuff in that right and are more like Ravenclaw.

Especially as it involved him breaking his vow. (but again, that's Jamie's tragedy. It is easy to do 'the right thing' when it is clear what is the right thing to do) Show-Jamie charging at the dragon - that was a typical Gryffindor thing to do. Both book and show-Jamie saving Brienne from rape by shouting sapphires: Gryffindor motives, Slytherin means. But if he were a true Slytherin, he would not have risked himself for Brienne. I bet 11yo Jamie wanted nothing more than to be a true knight - protect the weak and fight dragons or whatnot. The Sorting Hat would have put him in Gryffindor in a heartbeat.

I get more of a Ravenclaw feel for Hannibal Lector if I'm being honest. He prizes intellect, inquiry, expressions of culture. He's analytical and basically without higher ambition beyond exploring ideas and perfecting crafts: music, art, etc. His evil traits are mostly from taking a too abstract a view of life, particularly human life. Granted he has a very strategically oriented mind, but these strategies are usually pretty fixing the problem immediately in front of him, rather than pursuing a life's long ambition. He formulates a plan to get out of prison, but he's not formulating a plan to undo the legal system than makes his imprisonment possible. He formulates plans on how to kill people to make a meal, he does not formulate a plan where he would have enough power to do so in the light of day.

JK is a great author, but she doesn't do to well on making three dimensional characters when it comes to slytherins. Sure Snape was one, but other than that she didn't give any other slytherin some good to them. Draco to me is a little kid who was spoiled by his mother, but pcycoloicly abused by his father so the back and forth of his parents messed him up, but JK never showd this or made us try to symbolize with any slytherin villain. And not to mention that all the vilians are slytherin. Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Gryffindor could easily be vilians. Hufflepuff:Someone who's blinded by loyalty to someone and couldn't see the pain of anyone else. Ravenclaw: someone who valued knowledge above all even other lives. Gryffindor:Someone who is so brave that they do what ever they want. These can be done in JK's story, but she doesn't see this potential.

The Series Turned Out Good,But I Would't Call Rowling A Good Writer: Her Idea Of Good And Evil Is VERY Basic (Even Childish A Lot Of The Time),She's Not Scared Of Using Plot Devices,She Takes Up Most Of The Books Just For The Setting And She Wrote The Cursed Child And Called It Canon (Enough Said On That One). The Story Pieces Together Just Fine,But I Would't Credit It For Her Being A Great Writer: It Was More A Mix Of Good Marketing And Things Just Kind Of Falling Into Place In A Way That Made It Interesting.

To be honest a better portrayal of this kind of dichotomy is Avatar's Fire Nation. Yes they are waging a war that has caused a lot of death and suffering and a lot of bad people have sprung from them like Zhou, Ozai and Azula, but a lot of good people have come from the fire nation as well such as Zuko and Iroh and even Mai and Ty Lee. And overall when we spend a season within their borders it was clear that the citizens of the Fire Nation not warmongering assholes but are normal people with normal lives. It's way more nueanced than Slytherin was in my opinion.

I still think it was stupid that Gryffindor won the house cup at the end of Philosopher's Stone. Just because it was the house Harry was in and he's the main character that doesn't mean it had to win. And the stupid reasons Dumbledore gave points like "Congratulations for playing a chess game Mr Weasley. 50 points.""Good on you for solving a puzzle Miss Granger. Another 50 points." "10 points Mr Longbottom for trying to stop your friends sneaking out nearly allowing Voldemort and Quirrell to steal the Philosopher's Stone." "And 60 points to Harry Potter for almost dying fighting Voldemort and Quirrell."

I think the most important factor in deciding a house isn't you qualities, it's your values. That's why Wormtail ended up in Gryffindor. He wasn't brave, but he did value bravery. What Slytgerin values is success. What Gryffindor values is resilience. What Hufflepuff values is justice. What Ravenclaw values is distinction.

True sherlock is intelligent but there is a big difference on how slytherins and ravenclaws use knowledge. slytherins uses knowledge to gain success or a goal there pursuing. ravenclaws uses knowledge for learning purposes. Sherlock uses his knowledge and intelligence solve a case in which is a goal that he is pursuing therefore he is a slytherin in my opinion.

Ravenclaws have always been identified by their intelligence, cleverness, and insatiable desire to learn. And, indeed, that intelligence is a great strength. But there also personality flaws associated with that intelligence. When one feels that they have more intelligence than others, they may feel arrogant or narcissistic. That they are better than other people because they know more. In addition, knowing more can give people a taste and desire for power. After all, why shouldn't the intelligent people who know what they are doing operate things instead of all these morons? This makes for a desire to control and micromanage. A lot of these things overlap with Slytherins (or Gryffindors, for that matter). But that only means that you need to be careful and tease out what you want to say. Ravenclaws are also prone to solitude and isolation, as they are too caught up with their individual growth to care about others. Sherlock's main personality characteristics: Intelligence, Hyper Observant, Eccentric, Creative, and Narcissistic. He's not cunning or sly. And his main desire behind detective work is to solve the puzzle, not necessarily to actually help the victim. That doesn't sound like a Slytherin, so much as a high functioning Ravenclaw. Tony Stark is eccentric, intelligent, and narcissistic. But he doesn't scheme, manipulate, or use underhanded means to get what he wants. Tony Stark (in the Marvel films) is obsessed with controlling things so that he can protect the world (and the people he cares about), which can get out of hand. This sounds an awful lot like a Ravenclaw. And I could do the same with Doctor Strange.

Alexander Hamilton (at least Lin Manuel Miranda's interpretation of him) was arguably a Slytherin. Yes, he was impulsive in battle and constantly wanted to rise above his station, kind of like a Gryffindor. But he was also cunning, ambitious and a rule breaker; he played dirty, broke promises and made enemies all in the name of the betterment of the country. He picked and chose his battles and saw the value in strategy, planning ahead, intellect and making a contribution. His driving goal was to have a "legacy" which seems very Slytherin to me. As well as that, Slytherins are renowned for highly valuing their families. Hamilton, at least towards the end, thought the world of his wife and his family, and felt a great deal of guilt for his selfishness.

Yeah, I agree. Burr is the more Slytherin between him and Hamilton. Hamilton might as well be a Gryffindor with Slytherin tendencies or a Slytherin with Gryffindor with Slytherin tendencies. But you don't have to fit the mold to be in the house (i.e. Hermione could very well be in Ravenclaw or, heck, even Slytherin, imo, but she's still a Gryffindor). And I say that because I'm a Hufflepuff with slight Ravenclaw and Gryffindor tendencies XD
@asterismos5451

I'm a Ravenclaw, but with Slytherin tendencies, and I think this is a great way to look at Hamilton. I think he's a Slytherin foremost (he's ambitious above all else), but then also part Gryffindor (he's so impulsive and hot-blooded) and part Ravenclaw (how does he carry out his ambitions? By using intellectual arguments and learning as much as he can and by convincing people with logic). Burr is pretty clearly mostly Slytherin, as he's ambitious and very strategic, but he's a bit Ravenclaw as well mostly for the same reasons as Hamilton. I'd say Eliza's a Hufflepuff (duh loyal, kind, etc.) with some Slytherin and Ravenclaw undertones (she's very intelligent, and her ambitions aren't too prevalent in most of the show, but in Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story, we see just how much she can do when she sets her mind to it).

I wish Draco had turn to help Harry in the final book, maybe in the battle at the Room of Requirements or fighting together with Harry in the final battle against Voldemort (witch I feel is pretty soft and disappointing). I think that this will fulfill Draco's character redemption arc, witch it was heading for since the dead of Dumbledore. It's OK to see his son being the best friend of Albus Severus, but I see not changing his loyalty before Voldemort's dead like a lost opportunity in a narrative way.

Yeah, maybe, but I don't think so. That works for Narcissa herself and maybe to prove that all the Slytherin are not completely bad, but has nothing to do with what I was saying. I didn't mention the Slytherin house in any ways, I was just talking about Draco, his character arc and relationship with Harry, as his nemesis in the saga. And despite all this, I don't think a character needs to "be for something". In a fiction, for sure you can create a character with a purpose like showing one or another theory, create conflict or whatever, but the ideal way is to have characters that come alive in a natural way, being autonomous and consistent with their natural being and personal growth into the story.

The way I view the Hogwarts Houses is that everyone has the qualities suitable for every House. I think it is whichever quality that is strongest in you that you are sorted into one of the Houses. One of my favourite things to do is sort historical figures into Hogwarts Houses. It's fun, and you'd be surprised by the amount of very good kings and queens that are sorted into Slytherin. It doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be evil. For example, look at Peter Pettigrew. He turned on his friends and was a coward and he was in Gryffindor.
