Rapunzel was trapped in a tower. Her clothing was probably something her mother bought in the market so it wouldn’t have been very royal looking.
@AugustSideling6 жыл бұрын
Even set in a fantasy land, it's supposed to be set in something like a historical period and no one ever bought clothing at a market. Everyone either made their own clothing (if you were poor) or had it made for them (if they were rich). Fabrics would have been bought at the market, but other than that it was all on the individual to sew their clothing.

There are a few things in this that are missing some points. Firstly Aroura was French and the dress she wore was made by the Fairies who were looking after her and they were living like peasants to hide her royalty for 16 years plus they decided to make the dress on her birthday so they didn't have time to make it all fancy and royalty like the Queen (her mother in the film). Next Ariel, her wedding dress in the film does have the mutton sleeves! Then you are comparing Tiana's swamp wedding dress to a casual dress of the 20s. The dress you should have compared is the dress she wore at the end of the film. Then again she is a princess by then. Next, Snow White was made a slave to the Queen who didn't want to make her look any beautiful than her so she would have given her basic clothes at the time or something to make her less royal than the Queen. With Cinderella, you should have compared Claire's image to the original design of Cinderella, not the evolved version which made every past Disney princess have so many sparkles on their dresses. And finally with Rapunzel, again like Aroura grew up like a peasant so of course, her dress won't be as fancy as the high class or royalty she is. I know it much but let's not forget that most of the Disney princess before 2000s were hand-drawn, imagine how hard it would be for the artists to draw frame by frame a dress with so much detail to match the era they were in, especially the classic princesses who drawn traditional, not digital. One more note, Mulan did not become a princess in the film. She becomes a princess due to Disney adding a new requirement of performing an act of heroism.

Jeffrey. Have you read the original Cinderella tale? Instead of a fairy godmother, Cinderella goes to a tree where her late mother is buried under. The reason all of the outfits aren’t historically accurate is one, they have to animate the scenes, and two, to make the dresses more appealing to children.

Why all the dresses were over simplified in contrast with their historical counterparts? For the same reason Mickey Mouse and his friends are drawn with 4 fingers: *It saved up a lot of time and work for the animators.* Imagine yourself having to draw all those dresses in full detail, frame by frame, with a tight schedule back in the day. Same goes for 3D CGI graphics, helps avoid time constraints and clipping issues. The phrase "less is more" fully applies here for that reason.

What? Mulan did _not_ marry into royalty! And I hope people realize the reason Disney characters designs are so simple is because they're going to have to animate them. To traditionally and fluently animate such detailed and intricate designs frame by frame would take a toll on any animator. This is why simple designs are important for 2D animation.

There is a LOT of innacuracies in this video. Many very obvious ones. Although what really put the cherry on top for me is when they used a Victorian image while describing the kind of fashion the era beauty and the best is set in would use. If real research had been done, this video wouldn't have been so abysmally misinformed to the point of making such a poor mistake. Not to mention, no offense to the artists but a lot of the 'realistic outfits' still where not realistic in the slightest. A good portion of them did not take the character's actual social ranking or personality into account either for example. Like again, Belle. She's not royalty, and not extremely well off. She's not poor nor middle class, a little bit higher I would say, but definitely not wealthy. Only the wealthy could afford the fashionable trends with powdered wigs and pastel colored gowns (wich was very popular in France mostly. Honestly the live action movie did a WAY better job at being a bit more historically accurate than this video). It's all just, horribly wrong and misinformed.

Princes and the Frog. Tiana DID dress according to her times in her daily clothes. Her costumes were just that - costumes. The wedding dress had also been tied into her being a frog at the time she married. She was in the middle of the bayou and the dress reflected that. I don't think nature gives a care about human fashion statements. It has it's own.
@artisticbeautybyhanako68017 жыл бұрын
Not only that but just because her mother was an amazing seamstress doesn't mean she could afford to make the latest fashions for her. And considering she was marrying royalty, she needs something more elegant than what is essentially a cocktail/party dress

I've read the story written by Hans Christian Andersen a hundred times and the mermaid was definitely a girl. The story is called 'Den Lille Havfrue' which means 'A little female mermaid', and it is the story which was adapted for the Disney animation movie. The original story doesn't have a happy ending - the mermaid dies letting the prince and his princess live.
@maiabella70026 жыл бұрын
As a dane, I can tell you that the story was indeed inspired by Hans Christian Andersens story “Den lille havfrue”, but the enviroment under the sea is nothing like ours. Most fish in the film are tropical, definitely not what we have here in Denmark. You would almost assume it was placed somewhere far from Denmark. And about the homosexual theory - some believe Hans wrote it to symbol how he was in love with a man, though it has never been confirmed I believe.

Claiming that their fashion is “historically inaccurate”, yet so many things in this video were inaccurate...plus fairy tales and Disney movies aren’t meant to be accurate...also, why would Belle need to worry about the fashion of wealthy people if she was poor? In the Disney version, yes. However, in the original story, her father was a rich merchant. She had two sisters who asked for jewels and parasols and things like that, but she simply asked for a rose. Yes, she was down-to-earth and probably would not wear clothes like that until after she was married, but she wasn't completely broke.

Kristy Galbraith I thought that was part of the new Cinderella her stepsisters asked for jewels and parasols and she asked for a rose her father left became ill and died the rose was then given to Cinderella with the sad news that her father had died

In the new Cinderella, yes. But if you look up the original Beauty and the Beast, Belle has two sisters. The witch who cast the spell later turns them into statues outside the prince's castle, because of what they had done to her over the years.

Belle could afford books that makes her at least middle class and not wearing at least a corset means she was going around half naked even poor laborers had at least one work corset considering she never worked and sat around all day reading books and that she could read definitely points to her father at least providing a mid to upper class up bringing. So either they came from money but were disgraced or his inventions at least brought in some income. In the movie she sings about the poor provincial town and the simple folk there that also points to her having been upper class compared to the peasants as despite her kindness she still looks down on them for living simple lives thats a arrogance anyone who has faced actuall peasantry would not have.

@Anastas17866 жыл бұрын
Personally, I'm fine with Tiana's dress. Claire Hummel's dress is more accurate for a _1920s flapper,_ yes, but for most of the movie (in which she's both human _and_ in formal wear) Tiana's either in a dress she borrowed from her friend Charlotte, who is _obsessed_ with all things related to the Classic Generic European Princess, or she is marrying/has just married Prince Naveen, which would naturally call for a big, fancy "princessy" wedding dress instead, and the fashion for wedding dresses up until relatively recently tend to revolve around a handful of more-or-less timeless traditional templates rather than the cutting edge of current formal fashion.
@queenofthepandas86666 жыл бұрын
Anastas1786 plus Naveen comes from a different place the idea of fashion is mostly definitely different for him
@ellesbelles646 жыл бұрын
I agree with you! Also a lot of people don't realize that flappers were actually UNcommon, flapper fashion was a rebellion at the time, so generally only women on the cutting edge of fashion who were very interested in the looks of hollywood dressed that way. It makes sense for Charlotte since she's got a lot of money and an interest in those things, but not for Tiana. Additionally African American hair is very hard to manage at shorter lengths, so it's unlikely she would've bobbed it regardless! And, like you said, she wears very little of her own wardrobe in the movie, with her two costumes for the party, and her two work uniforms, her magical wedding dress of lilypads, and her second wedding dress from her human wedding (which is very much in the fashion)
@gustafae6 жыл бұрын
Lol also she got the magic dress after a make out session, it isn't like she bought it.
@charlottejayne41456 жыл бұрын
i remember reading a short story from the time period that talked about how getting a bob was scandalous. the women that did it were treated akin to hookers. especially when you added the flapper dresses with their lack of 'proper' undergarments. and as you point out an African American woman wouldn't likely have hair that would bob anyway. without the weight of longer hair it would probably curl tight and be more of a 'fro.

Oh, and by the way - criticizing Aurora's outfit because it's wrong for a princess is a little silly when she spends most of the movie living in the forest as a PEASANT and not royalty. So maybe think a little more about what you're saying in order not to sound like you DIDN'T WATCH THE MOVIE?

Of course, as Snow White was the King's daughter, the minute he died she would have ascended to Queen! Possibly the reason why the step mother 'queen' wanted to get rid of Snow White was because she was approaching the age where she didn't need a regent any more and could reign in her own stead thus able to remove the step mother from her self-appointed job.

how does her getting married to a man devalue her or her story about gender equality??
@Ryan_Nico7 жыл бұрын
i totally agree, and also, not nobody knows but a secondary meaning of the story is about homosexuality: the general seemed to be gay since he had fallen in love with someone who they thought was male. now, in the creator's idea he could also have fallen in love with "him" because he felt the "femininity" "he" actually somehow showed (I mean, it's impossible to TOTALLY fool someone about one's gender, some of your actual gender characteristics MUST slip out of the act) or maybe he was bisexual and not only liked men, so he was fine with Milan being a girl after all. And instead in the end he does marry a girl. Like, it seemed to be a message that homosexuality is fine and homosexuals should have the same rights and worth that straight people, along with the main women's right message, so why did they have to make him turn straight? I sincerely think they missed a good chance.
@Ryan_Nico7 жыл бұрын
it's because at the beginning the story seemed to transmit the message that women do not only deserve equal rights to men, but that they are also worthy even if they are not married and they can do whatever they want with their lives (in China at the time this was totally absurd) and instead after all her effort to work her way up and show she was worthy by herself and she could do things that no one could think of just because she's a woman, she finally gets married to a man. why does the ending have to include her actually reaching what SOCIETY thinks is better, instead of just winning her personal war?

@lizjohnston11737 жыл бұрын
Why would the little mermaid take place in Georgia? The huge inaccuracy of the Princess and the Frog film wouldn’t have been the interracial friendships. Interracial relationships of all kinds have always existed in New Orleans. The city is creole which in itself is a mixture of a bunch of ethnicities and cultures coming together. As a creole woman from New Orleans, I’m very proud of it. That doesn’t mean racism didn’t exist in Nola and that there was no separation of any kind. But I don’t believe the film stated the two went to school together. Just that they were friends. Which makes sense. Her mom is a top seamstress and probably worked for the white wealthy family for a bit because wealthy people from New Orleans need a ton of formal clothes. The two girls probably grew up around each other because of their parents doing business together so much and going in for fittings. It happens. It may not have been insanely common but it isn’t completely far fetched at all. Also the jazz scene did end up getting fairly integrated to an extent. It wasn’t as free and open as today but it did get a bit more lenient than some other cities especially other cities in LA

Mulan didn’t marry into royalty!!! She married a commander (I think) of the army!

Ummmmm.... the wrong facts about Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, and Mulan are cringe worthy. If you are going to make a video about such well known topics, at least do a little research.

Belle didnt care about beauty, and instead she cared about books. She was also living in a poor town, so she didnt have a lot of money to splurge on anyways, so Ya wrong, son

Actually when she marries into royalty in the end she DOES have money and she IS a queen, so she would dress fancily since at that time queens dressed to impress. *YA wrong, son*

Is it just me or was the entire moral of the movie to reject vanity and value inner beauty??? I doubt that after the ordeal Belle and the beast went through that they would jump straight into fashion don't you think?
@nikolegranger6 жыл бұрын
Actually, with the exception of Jasmin, the dresses are pretty accurate. When you are drawing the animation frame by frame you need to simplify the details, otherwise, the production can be prolonged by years!

The whole Ariel thing is totally bizzare. Georgia? There isn't a monarchy. Also, her dress sleeves in the wedding dress were much more 1890s Leg-o-Mutton than 1840s. The earlier pink dress was more like the earlier period. 1840s the leg o mutton started off the shoulder, and in the 1890s encompassed it. Also, when discussing Belle and French fashion, it flashes to pictures from the 1880s Bustle Period.

Aurora is French, and it makes sense because in the prologue it says that they called her that way, because of the sunlight that radiated light and heat, and in French dawn it is said: Aurore

"Rapunzel is based on a Germany children's book" but Aurora is from England and totally NOT based on a french children's book, neither Ariel based on a Denmark one. *Complains and get picky about historical facts* *Gets wrong facts about the original stories*

Just because the fairy tail comes from a certain region does not mean that the disneys movie take on it plays in that region. Just take the princess and the frog; It's loosely based on the fairy tail "Der Froschkönig" which is a fairy tail from germany. (as many are thanks to the brothers grimm) But I do agree that the video is based on poor research (they get many facts wrong) also love your profile pic, great taste :D

For Tiana the clothes are pretty accurate because towards the end she is wearing the clothes of the 1920’s flapper dress and all
@deathghoul21386 жыл бұрын
What I have noticed is that the outfits of the princess in the Disney movies are more simple and less decorated than what they should have worn in their time, which I think that Disney wanted to say that you should wear what you like and don't have to wear the latest fashion and copy other but it's better to be comfortable with your own clothes, that's my theory 💜
@ryn-pg9wb7 жыл бұрын
Have you realized that belle was just an ordinary village girl? And regular girls of their status wouldn’t have powdered wigs? Sure, beast could have had one in his castle, but his parents perished years before, and we all know he isn’t that sentimental.
@emiliecrtn94647 жыл бұрын
Chicken Todd Yeah I can't agree more with you ! Wigs were for the Bourgeois (richest statut of the unprivileged people) who lived in a Bourg ( and clearly Belle's city is clearly not a bourg) and it was only for the men in a case of a Bourgeois ( I'm not sure about that though) To be a woman and wear a wig you had to be a noble and she's clearly not a noble

Sleeping beauty took place in France! Why? Because at the end of the film they play the 14th century French anthem when Aurora and Philip are dancing

Jasmine- Aladdin takes place in a fictional city in the Middle East. Her outfit could be different and from her own people’s culture Aurora- originated in France. The fairies made her her dress. Maybe they wanted her to wear something simpler? Pocahontas- you do know that Disney is directed towards kids? I have a feeling no shirt would be a little too revealing Belle- I have a feeling she wouldn't really care for lace, poofs, and jewelry. Just following her story. Ariel- um.... Denmark. Yeah... Tiana- her dress is most definitely my favorite of them all Snow White- no comment, love the new version Mulan- I didn't realize that she married into royalty, bc she didn't Cinderella- her dress was made by a fairy. How do you know that her fairy godmother cared about the current fashion? Rapunzel- I didn't realise her parents sent her fancy dresses although she didn't know where she was for 18 years. Try looking at commoner dresses instead of those for royalty. I do really love all the remakes, but your reasoning doesn't make much sense
