Hi del, great videos as always. Could u explain how to understand and work off of the drawings given on a job like this. How to understand which joist goes where and set out plates etc. Thanks, Really appreciate your channel. Ross
@thetallcarpenter Жыл бұрын
Hi Ross🖐I wouldn't know where to start to try and make a video explaining my processes of setting out roofs like this😬and, yes, the drawing is important, but on many occasions a computer will draw out a roof on a technically different way to it being fitted. I could do a video on this but it would be VERY long and, potentially difficult to follow, plus I'd need to earn a day's wage, plus I'd really need someone to film it. I will keep trying to explain as much as I can about setting out and interpreting the drawings for these kind of roofs as when I do them👍Thanks for your comment 🤩 Cheers Del
@Colelewis1994 Жыл бұрын
@@thetallcarpenter thanks for the reply del. Yeah I get what you mean. I've never done a big truss roof ( done a couple gable to gable) and I always wonder how you go about doing them and how complicated it is working out what trusses go where.
@thetallcarpenter Жыл бұрын
@Ross Cooper The drawing, obviously, is the place to Starr when fitting a bigger roof, but it's not usually got much useful information on it such as exact measurements and specific details, and it's experience that helps you fill in these gaps👍
@clinteastwood36842 жыл бұрын
Good video man. I always find it quicker to string line the main roof section and cut for the hip. Then fit the monos and let them over sail. Then move the line over to the thickness of the material being used and then cut everything in situ. Then just slide the hip into the channel you created.
@thetallcarpenter2 жыл бұрын
Hi Clint🖐 I guess that method means you have to offset the monos so the don't line in with the trusses, or the flying tops of the monos will still hit the cut flying tops of the trusses🤔 I really like the sound of doing it that way, cause you don't need to mess about getting an accurate mono rafter measurement, you just nail them up against the girder and cut the top moved over line as you say👊Thanks for your comment bud and for watching😎Cheers Del
@clinteastwood36842 жыл бұрын
@@thetallcarpenter as long as you set out from your central mono to the rest symmetry takes over. You literally cut a channel the correct thickness of your hip within the roof. Then slide the hip in between. It's just the way i was taught.

Good work as usual Del. Hard to get all those measurements on your own. Just wondering how long all these strange truss roof designs have been about in the UK. I left in 98 and up to that point had never seen anything but common trusses sent out and a pile of timber to build the rest. Now you are getting reducers and valley trusses. Starting to get there. By the time you retire they may well have sorted them out. The other thing you would have thought in today's computer age is if you are going to run a truss plant why not just shop around and buy the licence for a decent truss program. The Americans have some great ones. The Aussies do too. These have been perfected over many years and are way better than what you get. The parameters are fully adjustable to input tolerances for UK building regs. It is the software that designs the roof. Once you have that you could get rid of this convoluted effort you are trying to work with. Probably trying to do it in house and save a quid but if suddenly they made great trusses imagine the extra business.
@thetallcarpenter2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave🖐Another insightful comment bud👊I don't think there is the desire push the boundaries of truss design and manufacture here in the UK😬Its like everyone is allergic to the suggestion that things could be done differently or need looking at from a new perspective.
