I had three door handles to fit and I was initially unsure how best to go about drilling straight holes for the through bolts. This video was the most useful and clearest explanation I could find. I used a length of 3cm thick hardwood for a homemade jig hoping it would help to keep the pilot holes lined up when drilled from both sides of the door. I used a clamp to make sure it didn't move. When I consider how it might have gone wrong, I was able to do a reasonably good job of it. Thanks.

Great video. Some electricians linesman’s pliers have integrated bolt cutters for shortening machine screws. We use them when fitting pattress boxes/ light switches/plug switches. The screw screws in and is cut with the action of the plier, you then screw the screw out which maintains the screw thread. This would save you so much time with guess work and filing down post cut. Great idea. Will make one for my remaining doors. The only problem I had was spindle hole size as I commented in previous vid. I opted for 19mm instead of 20mm recommend but when the bolts were nipped up circlip and washer on the back of the rose protrudes and binds. I ended up running a burr around the spindle hole to accommodate the circlip. I doubt the 20mm recommended would have cleared it. Thanks again👍

I like your simple, easy to understand videos, and your non-condescending attitude to us viewers. I have a question though - when it comes to fitting the handles, couldn't you just attach the handles to the spindles, then attach them to the door by the three screws, THEN mark and drill the two bolt-through holes (from one side if one is careful not to break out the other side), remove the 3 screws and then fit the two bolts, then screw the three screws back to finish up the handle? Or am I being dumb? I am a DIY'er with a little experience, and I have 8 of these exact doors to fit, with corresponding bolt-through handles almost identical to the ones you fitted, so am somewhat apprehensive. Also, what size auger would you suggest for the spindle and and mechnism, and could I use a spade bit instead of an auger bit? Oh yeah, I've subscribed! Cheers.
@thetallcarpenter Жыл бұрын
Hi there🖐You could mark the holes for the through bolt's as you describe, but I'd definitely drill in from each side as the bolt holes are VERY close to the edge of the back plate rose. Check outmy video on fitting these latches, and the drill sizes are in the comments section👍Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
@TrueBrit1 Жыл бұрын
@@thetallcarpenter Thanks for the quick reply. Yes I get what you're saying, and can understand the risk of drilling through and having the holes on the other side come through outside of the rose. I think therefore a jig, like you have made, will be the best method, as then drilling through both sides should ensure the holes are in alignment. I hope.

There's a way without having to feel around with the screw. With the handle off and the spindle in one handle, put the long screws in the door handle holes and thread both the metal rods on about 3 or 4 turns. Now you can just push that handle and the 2 rods all the way through to the other side, with enough to make the ends of the rods poke out the 2 holes on the other side. At least on my door the rods could poke out, they taper slightly thinner at the ends. This way there isn't any feeling around for the hole inside the door - the rod is there poking out - you can just put the short screws in the other handle and be able to see the ends get screwed in.

Great Video. Thank you for taking the time to make the video. I have few silly questions that I want to ask 😂 is the door a hollow door or is it solid? I have hollow door that I need to put handles on it. Similar to yours but worried that it won't hold it. And second question is what drill size do you use to make the holes? Once again thank you 🙂
@thetallcarpenter3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tazul 🖐 These doors are solid core, but even hollow core doors will have a fairly decent sized lock block in the the edge which will be solid timber and easily take a bolt through latch👊From memory, I think I am using a 4.5mm drill bit for the bolt though bolts, but do use a drill that suite the particular bolt size as they can differ in diameter👍Thanks for watching😎Cheers Del

Probably a stupid question but how does the screw nearest the lock edge pass the mechanism inside the door?
@thetallcarpenter3 жыл бұрын
Not a stupid question Ray.🤩 The latches and locks that are to be used with this handles have holes in their bodies to allow the screws/bolts to pass through them. They are known as, 'bolt through', latches/locks. They provide a better fixing for the handles, particularly when they are on a circular back plate.👍 Cheers.

Excellent content. Fitting with non-connecting screws should be illegal imo. Atleast the handles should only be sold with connecting bolts. I recently got locked in through that, but luckily there was no emergency Tell me if you agree

Hi James🖐I hadn't really thought about it bud, but you have got a point, and a handle coming off, as you found out, could easily lead to you getting stuck in a room😩Yes, you're also right that maybe all handles should clamp to the spindle, especially on fire doors etc🤔Great comment and thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del

Iv always wandered why they dont alternate the hole position on the handles on each side so you could put thicker screw in door as you can only put a screw half thickness of door sondont hit other side screw. Ive got young kids and they nearly hanf off the door handles and have to keep tightening at times

Hi Jim. Fortunately, as these were on a tubular latch, the screws positions in the handle rose actually miss the latch body.👍 I did have to file a tiny bit of the end of the screw for the bathroom lock though.😉 Great comment.👍

Yeah this caught me out too. Gave up on the bolts as wasn’t bothered cutting down after all of the faffing around to try line them up. Moved onto the screws instead and once fully tightened the latch stuck and lock wouldn’t come out…took me a minute to realise the bloody screws were too long also. Wish I’d watched this video and read this comment before I started 😂
@benjaminhunt2833 жыл бұрын
Have you had the handle where the rose won't go past the handle! What a bloody pain especially when the spindle to hole locations weren't accurate enough for template/jig. Had to cut a pencil to 18mm long and hold with a pair of pliers. It was crazy. Took soooo long.😖 Ironmongery and materials my biggest bugbear for the last decade.
@thetallcarpenter3 жыл бұрын
Hi Benjamin. YES, that and all sorts of issues due to poorly made ironmongery.😩 When I work for developers now, they always get better quality stuff for me now, as its quicker to fit, works better, looks better and lasts longer that cheaper, contractors stuff.👊 No matter what stuff you have though, sometimes one of these latches/locks/handles/privacy knobs, just seems to take miles longer than the rest cause you just cant get it to, 'click'.😣 Cheers.

5:30 be nice to see this assemble off the door. I’ve watched both videos - great, no BS. But my handle pack has no instructions and seems just like yours. I’ve no idea why the full through screws & “female” part are at 9 & 3, opposed to 12 & 6 positions. My handle set “intelligent hardware” has a grooves hole through the barrel like yours, but the female part is too fat to fit through it. Crazy. Seems like I’ll have to junior hacksaw all the female recipient parts down - seems daft and fiddly.
