Roof truss problems causing serious delays on the 1st day of the 12 hip roof ***VERY FRUSTRATING***

The truss manufacturer dropped an absolute bollock there mate. Nothing worse than not being able to crack on with the job. Hopefully all gets sorted quickly. Love intricate roofs, so much more fun than standard gable to gable. Looking forward to seeing the progress.

I find when ever I do trussed roof there’s always something that has to be worked around whether something has been missed out or the manufacture of them isn’t always up to standard. But when you do speak to them they try to make out they’re not at fault and when they do realise they’ve made the mistake they go all quiet and like you say are in no rush to rectify things. This is probably why I prefer a good old fashioned cut roof! 💪🏼😎 It’s like when the computer says no they struggle to do anything and just do anything until it accepts it, and then us at site have to fix it!

'computer says no'😆 Their design software draws the last common truss on the hipped end INSIDE the actual geometric centre line of the roof, meaning the end common 'mono' rafter physically cant join in an equal roof plane😩 There is diminishing truss that the rear end common/hips fit to, but it has been drawn OUTSIDE the hip line so could never work😬I'm ditching these trusses and putting it in hand cut so the hipped end works properly👍More videos on the way on this and thanks for your comment and for watching😎Cheers Del

Had a few like this, brain fever. The very last one I made them take back and gave them 1 week to replace. They mouthed at me, no way. Well, no money then was my answer. We made them on site, and I sent a mail with a big thank you for all free timber 😂, they supplied the walltimbermodules as well. The salesman threatened with court, well. Was 4 years back.

Wasn't a big job, I had 3 jobs waiting and was essential that I finished this one in 4 weeks. Made it, and 3 days off to rest. We needed a break and a few cold ones. They make these modules and trusses and still get it wrong 😂. Advise my clients not to buy from that company in question. Keep up your vids 👍👍 I look on KZbin to see how buildings are done outside of Sweden, worked in France, Germany, Holland and Norway. Always some diffrent ways to build. Some are real odd and some are just genius. Never fully trained is my belief and pick up on smart ways is not stupid. Been in the trade since 1990 and pass on what I know to younger lads.

I had a similar issue with small rafters for a mono pitched porch roof. So the bigger ones were good and when it cam around to the porch area the smaller rafters weren't lining through. I knew the wait would be too long to get them to come out and change it so I just beefed up the size with ply, I think it was 12mm out. But the ply solved the issue although maybe not the best thing to do.

Del how do you deal with mistakes you make do you ever take it personally or do you understand we all make them from time to time? For example that slight gap in a mitre or some other small imperfection do you just accept it as part of the process? Is your high quality of work motivated by fear of failure?

Hi there🖐That's a well framed question. If its a silly mistake and easily rectifiable, then I don't really think about it, but if its a more fundamental mistake that someone like me with 35 years experience, shouldn't really be making, then I do get annoyed with myself. An example of this might be setting something out on the wrong side of a line like a stud wall, and then continuing to build the entire wall and any others coming off it, only to find later down the line that is wrong and all needs to be altered, when I should have just double checked it as I was putting the first plate down. My primary motivation for making a nice job, (or the best job I can), is that I just get such a huge amount of satisfaction from doing/looking at top quality carpentry, and conversely, I don't like to see poor quality work👍Awesome comment🤗Cheers Del

Feel for you Del. Aussies build generally pretty poor homes but they have mastered trusses. That truss plant should be closed down. Playing at building trusses and haven't a clue. It was over 20 years ago when I was designing and building trusses. Even back then everything was computer controlled. We entered the floor plan into the truss program in zones. Usually in 2 or 3 different ways with different bearing points and point loads. The program then works out every single component for each variant. Pick the version you want and send to computer saws. The program is the certified engineer and you can issue an engineering certificate directly from it. The cutting and picking list that goes to the construction floor has every size, grade of timber required and the components are cut by computer saws. All the box settings for the press boxes are included and as the timber was cut by computer if something doesn't line up it flags the box setting as probably wrong. All the plate sizes are on the set out plan and the pre set truss cambers. All the truss boots, brackets, bracing you name it. All ancillaries are spat out by the program and strapped together as an ancillary pack that goes out with the trusses. And like we have discussed before all the hip rafters are pre cut and included with step down hip trusses that form part of the hip. All valleys everything come made in the pack. Full layout drawings with every measurement for truss positions all numbered. And corresponding truss numbers. Each hip set is marked say in your case A to F and then each member numbered within that set for placing. Any bobtail trusses pre cut. The only cutting that would be required on that entire roof is on each hip corner you have to cut back and install horizontal support timbers to the hip board at fascia level bracing back two trusses in each direction. Plus the computer program is even better now 20 years on. And then I watch you struggling with a catalogue of disasters.

Really Frustrating Del i know your pain. I had a supplier one time on this side of the puddle and they started off very good, all of a sudden things started slipping just like whats happening on ypir job. Id a pretty good relationship with the rep. They wernt a cheap company to buy from. Anyhow he promised all sorts but problems still kept occuring. I finally had enough and i got a 8' x 4 ' sign printed for the site detailing the delay with the company. I told them the way i wanted the job measured in the future and i insist on their engineer meeting me and their rep too to measure the job and have a pre design meeting. They dont get paid until the roof it ready for felt and batton. We have a good relationship now 😉. Id imagine. If you spoke to them and told them about your channel, and that you would be afraid youd let their name slip by accident ( seen as your gerring on !! 😜😜) it mightnt be good advertising. Hope you get fixed up

Last truss roof I did with my old boss was a bastard hip. 45 degrees on front and back and the two hiped ends 38 or so degrees 🤔 🙈. Terrible design but the truss company was atrocious. After it I hoped to never to see another one.

Some of these manufacturers are tossers, I did one 5 years ago, side extension but existing was pitched ,architect and builder whent for trusses I told them there would be problems as the truss company wouldn't get it even though we gave them every measurement, ended up ripping up firring pieces to plant on top of the trusses to sort it 😁
