Yet if you watch the instructor, HE TOUCHES THE BOAT. ;) He does not realize what he himself is doing. It isn't really about not touching the boat, but WHEN you touch it. Again, watch him demonstrating before having others do it... he touches the boat with his far hand every time he enters the boat.

Those zippy little canoes look like so much fun! I have an eighteen-foot touring beast. It's great for taking a novice, a couple of kids and a week's worth of food and gear, and it tracks like a dream; but those little guys look like they could just dance on a creek or shallow pond.

Regarding his instruction to lean forward with your paddle to go left/right. The paddle seems to be near your face or chest. If you are going down a rapid it might get jammed in a rock and you might get hit as a result. Seems fine in deep water, but i personally wouldn't recommend it it shallow or rapid water.
@Cruxador
@Cruxador 2 жыл бұрын
Chest is a good place for it to be unless the water is very rapid indeed, moreso than most people would be safe on at all. Chest lets you brace a little more solidly and not lose the paddle.

Very nice tutorial. Even after all these years, I still miss canoeing. One thing not covered is the quality of the canoe. I bought a Bell Morningstar after years of using the more common Grumman and such. The former was built to be the BMW of canoes, handling marvelously, while the latter are designed to keep you afloat and perform about as well as a Sherman Tank. Those zippy little canoes in the video are great for small people, but I'd bog it down to the gunwales. They're great for day trips and solo adventuring, but only if you weigh next to nothing.... like you see all the guys are managing to accomplish. If you're over 200#, getting a canoe to maneuver as nimbly as you see in the video isn't easy, and gets harder faster as the weight increases. Saw this myself after gaining a ton blubber following injuries to my knee and back. Even the best canoes can only do so much.

Great job - you had your young audience right in the palm of your hand! :) I wonder about the paddle length lesson, though. Sitting in the bottom of the canoe places you very close to the water, so a short paddle shaft makes sense and obviously works well for you. If anyone is kneeling in a larger volume canoe (which would float higher) or sitting on a seat, wouldn't the shaft length need to be longer since there would be more distance between the paddler's shoulder and the water?

It's correct that a longer paddle is suitable for a different kind of canoe and water. We have otter tails that go from ground to chin, for use on fairly deep lake and high seats (easier for stiff novices)

Are those smaller canoes also usable in larger waters like a lake? I kind of like the fact that they can be carried around and one is so close to the water. But where I live we don't have many deep enough rivers I guess. Also lakes tend to be a bit more windy. So there are a lot of small waves. Is that a problem?
@Cruxador
@Cruxador 2 жыл бұрын
They are usable, it's just that their advantages are not as relevant. The kind people use in deep open lakes and rivers are better for speed, since maneuverability is not so important. Small waves shouldn't matter, but the wind can be a problem when you have very little draft/keel since you'll get blown around.

Surely if you lean forward with your paddle as far as you can to steer the boat port/starboard down a rapid there is a danger that your paddle will catch in a rock and your paddle will hit you, either hit your face or your chest
@JamesWillmus
@JamesWillmus 4 жыл бұрын
That's why you never put it right in front of your face. If the paddle hits a rock, it should shove itself up and over your shoulder, at which point the paddle can be lifted and placed elsewhere.

This is great video. I am glad I watched. I have done kayak before with double blades, not problems but I will do my first canoe paddling next weekend. I will have a light 18 pound 12 ft Classic canoe from Hornbeck Boats and my choice of paddle is so far a Wermer Ovation, double blade paddle 240 cm long. Wermer are very lightweight but they are expensive. I was also looking at the Wermer Algonquin carbon one on a Since my plans in future includes soloing canoeing camping trips i try to buy as light as I can. everything seen here is done with the single paddle. I am wondering what is the real difference and the benefits going from one to the other or maybe have both? Having those two paddles I mentioned one end out shelling out a whooping $700.00 !!! just to go as light as you can!

Why do you sit legged in the boat ?? Kneeling is better....
@noahalexander3607
@noahalexander3607 8 жыл бұрын
+Bastian “Basti” Canadier Because when the boat is so small like that it, the width is smaller. When you kneel it is so that you can reach over the gunnels and into the water easily, since these boats are so much smaller than a regular canoe, sitting cross-legged makes it easier and more comfortable to control the canoe with your hips and you can still reach over the gunnels. Basically, if he was kneeling in canoes this small, it would be difficult for him to control because he would be sitting to high.

Agree, a pedestal would be much better in every respect. They would actually be better off with narrower boats where they could lock their knees in sitting but kneeling is still way better in every respect (visibility, stability, strength, control, etc...)

However, as a bit of searching has turned up, in this case the situation is not so simple. This is not to say that there is not great value in much of the knowledge they carry. For example, this is probably one of the best canoe paddling lessons I've ever seen, and the group's understanding of natural ways is probably difficult to improve upon. astheteachingdrumturns.blogspot.com/2008/02/
@peterzelchenko
@peterzelchenko 5 жыл бұрын
As a further addendum, according to some Native people, what this group knows of natural ways is probably limited to basic techniques (e.g., paddling a canoe) and may not be properly respectful of Native shaman and spirital practice. I encourage you to go to the below "As the Teaching Drum Turns" blog and read and learn.astheteachingdrumturns.blogspot.com/2008/02/ (Later: At least that's what I thought. Read further below; there are wheels within wheels. Maybe he knows a lot more than we suppose.)

Finally, to round out this review that probably nobody will ever read, here is Forrest Carter's (Tamarack Song's) own "Criticism" page on his own site. Here he lists "As the Teaching Drum Turns" at the top, and all other critics that he is aware of. Call it what you will, cult or no cult, I have rarely seen anyone in the mainstream with the courage to openly list his own critics in his own publication. tamaracksong.org/60-2/ (If the link dies, you should be able to find it at Archive.org or go to the website and find the Criticism page.)

+Rambo Israel they are homemade from our own custom fiberglass mold. But you can find nearly the exact same models produced by a few companies under the model name "wee lassie." It is an old canoe design I believe from the fur trade, and at least 3 companies still make them. They're so small (10') and maneuverable they're really fun to paddle. Here's two places that make Wee Lassie's www.slipstreamwatercraft.com/Slipstream_Watercraft_2/Wee_Lassie_106%22.html www.feathercanoes.com/html/wee%20lassie.html
