Hi Chaps! Thanks for all your comments - Quick update: 1) If you're doing this upgrade, you could go for the newer Intel 9260 Wi-Fi card (faster, BT 5.), I already had a 8265 laying around so I wanted to keep costs down (and still improve my Wi-fi reliability) 2) Some of you are saying I re-connected the black/white antenna wires incorrectly on the Wi-Fi chip, in fact the Killer card required them to be the opposite way around compared to the Intel. Which is why I reconnected them in a different way. 3) Be very, VERY careful with the two phillips-head screws under the flap. They are extremely soft and easy to thread. 4) You can unplug the battery before doing upgrades if you need to, better to be safe than sorry, but it's not absolutely necessary. 5) Here's a link for the wallpaper: imgur.com/gallery/Ytp5l Hope you enjoyed the video! Cheers :)

It's a small detail but it's really cool that you showed the ENTIRE process, including after installing the new SSD. Most youtube videos don't show that part. I haven't used Windows in a while, and reinstalling Windows 7 on my old Alienware desktop was NOT that easy after I replaced the mechanical hard drive with a 2.5" old school SSD. It's nice to see that if I actually opt for a new windows laptop for my daughter or something (since most schools use windows), it will be easy to upgrade the machine. TU for the helpful video.

I cant imagine how many laptops I've tinkered inside of, once the trend towards internal batteries became a thing I stopped caring about unplugging them and I (nor anyone I work with) has ever had a safety issue. Ok I'm being a little glib there but honestly if you are just swapping cards and you fry something something else is wrong with the system as that should not happen. Some laptops let you access memory/ssd without even opening the laptop in which case you would have to take the whole thing apart to do what you are talking about to perform what would otherwise be a 3 minute upgrade.

Can you please make a proper video on how you installed windows after replacing everything
@Amoral-uu3nf4 жыл бұрын
Its fairly easy, There are 2 options - 1)after installing an ssd plugin a usb drive with windows on it, and then open up the boot menu and select your usb boot device and then select the drive you want to install it on after that the screen will turn black, thats when you need to unplug the usb, then the windows install is really easy. 2)You can use a program like Macrium Reflect or Samsung's other option to clone the drive, you will need your old drive and a new drive as well .......you can look it up on KZbin. hope it helped
@ryankeeling936 жыл бұрын
Tip for those looking to install a traditional SSD into their laptops (possible for m.2 nvme SSD as well, but potentially more finicky) connect your SSD up to your desktop PC (If you have one) and use macrium reflect to copy the contents of your desktops storage onto the new drive, then install the drivers for your laptop into your new SSD and delete anything not needed on it. Then install into laptop with a ready to go SSD, with the same setup as your desktop PC !

With any upgrade like this, once you take the back off, take a photo, for 2 reasons, if you make an error you can see how the connections were when you took the back off. Second reason take a photo after you have finished the upgrade and rename the photo file something like "Dell XPS 9570 upgrade" so you can search and find it again then a year or 2 later you can see what upgrades you did or didn't do as sometimes you may forget what you did.

For more advanced users: if you want to use hardware encryption on Samsung, you have to magically enable it *before* installing OS, effectively, running it through Samsung Magician on other already installed PC :> Screws are too soft, so proceed carefully. I noticed how careful you are when you open the lid, you also hold it on the sides not in the middle. Have you noticed that the touch screen glass moves forward on top of the lid if you hold the lid in the middle while opening. Of course you must not press against the touch screen while opening, basically the finger only has to touch the plastic cover. Dell changed once the whole display for me because of that under warranty. In my case the glass moved forward by 1-2 mm. The whole display is so thin that it bends under the resistance of hinges.

Nice video, I decided to upgrade mine, so I paid up and got the 1TB 970 pro. Then I found this video and decided to get the Intel AX200 wifi-6 chip, then I got the tiny bit faster Crucial Ballistic 32 GB 2,666 MHz with CAS 16 timing, for a tiny bit better latency. I'm not sure how well the RAM will work, and you forgot to run through the RAM setup and tests and benches. FYI, I seen some phillip screw issues. I have ran into this in the past many time and have an assortment of screwdrivers. I find you need to make sure the whole phillips tip is fully filling the screw on all 4 corners. I find most tiny phillips tips are too narrow, so you may need a bigger one than you think. But always look closely for a tight fit. Also, make sure the screw driver tip is sharp and no rounded a little, or it will strip out the head. This is always a thorn in my side. Make sure the tip is in perfect 90-degree angle, if it is offset too much it will also strip it out. Sorry for this long tip on screws, but it is so important.

useful video but a minor points, 1) I found it useful not to put the screws back in until you boot and check everything is OK. it is very annoying to have to re-remove the screws if RAM is not properly placed/clipped into place. 2) I am skeptical of the day to day impact of the storage speed. it would have been 10x more informative if you had done a 4k edit and render, before the upgrade, and then one after. arguably, the end of the day work speed will be driven by the weakest link of the machine, in this case it could be the throttling of the CPU, and less so of the storage speed.

I have this laptop on the way, along with a 49" Samsung curved monitor. Currently using a 2018 model HP laptop and 2 Dell 25 inch monitors. They all still work grear, but it's time. I think I will go with the 64 GB RAM as it's just $112 on Amazon 😁

The Crucial RAM, being 32GB, is good and all, but it is friggin CL19 for CAS :// I know Intel CPUs are less susceptible to loose timings, but HyperX has a CL15 kit at 2666MT/s, while still being a non OC 1.2V memory kit. I'd love to see that kit in this beautiful Dell. I'm eyeing the 2x8GB kit for my Zehpyrus M (1070)

You’re also going to need to invest in about 5 power cable adapters because of the design flaw and the wire always breaking in the adapter as they keep failing and eventually your XPS will never power on.

Wow, I guess you've had a bad experience with the XPS. I just bought one on Amazon, and it's shipping tomorrow. Your comment has me worried.

Couple of things: 1. too bad about that 32 GB of RAM being CL19. Should've gone with CL15 at most, which is available, and usually only a few quid more. CL & CAS ratings are overhyped quite a bit, but still, with large video editing projects, the difference between CL19 and 15 can start to get significant. 2. Those cooling fans look really filthy. Time for a good cleaning with some compressed air.

Did you reinstall the Dell applications when you upgraded your SSD? Do you feel they add any value?

Command Update / Suppport Assist as well as Sound Maxx are quite non-optional for optimal operation, especially that Dell tends to do A LOT of firmware updates.

Hey Tom, thanks for your update on components, which we could use to upgrade our Dell machines. Are there any further updates on components or is your last post (7 months ago) still the best advice for upgrading? I'm looking forward to hear from you, have a nice day. Best regards Julian
