Today we're upgrading my brand new Dell XPS 15 9500 to the MAX! Does it make sense to put so much ram into a base model computer? Probably not...
...but is it awesome?

I stumbled across this video through the magic of data mining me and I want to thank you because you just sold a laptop for dell because I was wondering if it is possible to do this exact thing and how difficult it would be considering the hell my other laptops cause me. You literally hit it on the button and helped me with a decision I have tried to make for weeks. Thank you. I'm giving a rare thumbs up.

everything in this video screams "mac user": 1) no experience with an essential tool kit 2) touching the ram stick contacts 3) considering using a SODIMM chip in a "gaming rig" (supposedly a desktop) 4)* Of couse the "heatsink" thermal pad . Just upgraded my ram + storage (used a WD Blue 1TB instead of the Samsung Drive). Some tips I can give is that removing the battery connector the first time is a little tough since its on there pretty tight... make sure to have some sort of non-conducting prying tool (plastic) to ease the connector off without damaging it! Good luck on your upgrades!

A few things that needs to be emphasized. You absolutely need a prying tool to detach the backing. It's not just "kinda a pain" it's impossible without a pry bar. The back is clicked together VERY tightly. Also after detaching the backing, my XPS was never the same. It lost its tight seal. Such that when i rest my hand on the laptop, i can hear creaking click as there is now a gap and the laptop has flex. I was also unable to detach the power without using the prying tool also. Couldn't just pull it out with my fingers. Then there's the issue of the missing screw. So to be more clear than what was hinted at: 1. Plastic pry bar 2. SSD screw 3. Your laptop is not going to be the same

Hello, i did a battery and SSD drive swap on an XPS13. At first run a had the same feeling. So i gave it a second shot, and i did it more precisely and harder. Now its rock solid. I hear your point, but maybe you should try it reassemble again and do it more precise. Take your time, dont rush it. Second option is the quality differs from model to model. This was a 2015 XPS 13.

So I just commented 6 days ago about how useful this video was, and that I did this. Sadly, my XPS 15 died beyond any quick solution after a driver update from Dell. Rebooting left me in BIOS with a “no boot device found” message. Dell support had me reset BIOS. After that, it would not boot up, wouldn’t even get into BIOS. Spent 4 hours troubleshooting with them until they said they’d have to replace it. I returned it today. Back to Mac stability.

Dude, I would boot from the Evo plus SSD. I bet you its way faster than the one which was shipped with the laptop. Also if you want more of a boost in the performance from the SSD's I would try to run them in RAID configuration but then I would also suggest you to get another one of the EVO plus SSD. I hope this makes sense.

@Jodhi_Singh
@Jodhi_Singh 4 жыл бұрын
@@Fmlfml_wa Ya so depending on the money you would like to spend I would say either clone the existing SSD (In the laptop) to the new faster SSD (In this video it was the Samsung evo "good choice"). So that the Samsung becomes your boot drive (Also make sure you select that in your bios if need to be). When all that is successful and the laptop boots from the Samsung SSD and all your data got transferred to the Samsung SSD then you and go ahead and format the Dell SSD. use the old SSD as storage. Or Install Samsung SSD is not the laptop where the Dell SSD was installed keep the Dell SSD out of the laptop. Install fresh copy of windows (get the iso from Microsoft free and then install it on a USB drive). Install windows on your laptop using the USB drive. Make sure all the data you need from the old SSD is transfered to the new Samsung ssd. Then you can go ahead either formant the old Dell SSD and install it as extra space on your laptop. Or You can run them in raid configuration and that is bit hard to explain on comments. Check redit for that I bet someone all ready did it. Hope that helped!

I’m not sure that booting from the Evo would be that much faster than the default Ssd. Yeah the evo is much faster in general but idk if that difference will really be apparent in loading times
@Jodhi_Singh
@Jodhi_Singh 4 жыл бұрын
@@junsimonswell if you use the evo as boot drive then anything installed (programs like solid works or flow simulation even adobe suit) can use the extra read and write speed of the evo ssd. But yes their is some truth in your comment but it all juts boils done to your work flow.

Extra suggestion: memory upgrade - 128GB DDR4 (2 x 64GB) is possible, but market version of 64GB is not available yet. For industrial one, there exists. SSD: 4TB m.2 2280 is available. Extra HDD or SDD (SATA Form factor) are available but you will have to change the battery (smaller size). In my case, I purchased almost barebone of this 9500 model this year and upgrade memory to 64GB + 4TB SSD + 4TB SSD + smaller battery for my 3D model learning project.

10:29 can you explain this more? What do you mean by 1. “Take the cpu upgrade” what cpu upgrade? 2. “Put the gpu in here” what gpu are you putting there? 3. “Probably half the ram” so 32 gb instead of 64 gb 4. Also why will the three steps above have much more capability than the build/upgrade you did of adding 64gb of ram and a 1tb ssd. What’s different in the more optimized build/upgrade that you could’ve done that increases the capability while also costing around the same amount compared to the build/upgrade you actually did in the video.

I wish that Apple (and even Dell to a lesser extent) would create more modular hardware - I mean not just RAM and Storage, but also being swap out the processor for something faster or putting in another graphics card would be a game-changer. These firms overcharge for all of their components / upgrades that the first company to release a top tier (XPS or Macbook quality) modular laptop would completely crush the competition.

I save old ram sticks. When I sell/replace the laptop in the future I replace upgraded components with the original factory components unless I also want to replace the upgrades. This way, I keep my expensive upgraded drives/ram to use in the new laptop I just bought.

Nice series of vids on XPS. I'm about to pull the trigger on the 15" 9500 and upgrade the memory to 64GB. The memory in your link is the wrong spec for best performance it should 2933MHz, so the 3200 modules are required not the 2666MHz in link.

Yep thanks for doing this video - I did the exact same upgrade, did 64 GB ram, WD Black SN850 1TB NVME and could not be happier. if you are considering the wifi 6e card replacement being described online and in KZbin it wont work because the killer chip is soddered to the board and looks nothing like the one being shown in any of the videos.

Hey man such an awsome video, really really helpful. I have one question, is it possible to update the WiFi card with the base model and if so could you make a video on it. I tried with other videos but my model looks a little from the other xps I have seen on KZbin. My mine looks exactly like yours. I was just thinking it might not be possible to change. Anyway have a great day.

Great video! just upgrade xps 9500 to 64gb memory. Can't go wrong with more pc memory, their is always some program that has memory leaks and hogs memory. Do note that if your laptop does not start up right away, do freak out, hold down the power button for 10 seconds and push it again to restart. thanks

It's a beautiful laptop but it's not the same without the dedicated GPU. I think the GPU would crush that performance in the rendering test. I'd recommend buying the one just above the base model to get the GPU and then add the other SSD/Memory upgrades yourself.

Hi, Great Video, but please can you explain, is there a reason why you've chosen RAM with lower Specs)? You suggest a 2666 DDR4 Ram Kit, but according to DELLs standard, the original one are running at 2933. (So I would suggest to buy DDR4@3200). Please let us know :-) Thank you!

Ok, So where are the speakers exactly??? In top grid or only at the bottom as in previous models? I can see 2 speakers on the side Also, i am very curious about new speakers if they are same garbage as on previous models. I Have had 3 models - 9550, 9560, and 9570 which I currently have. In all of them I had to replace speakers with new ones. Usually left speaker dies and starts to rattle if you listen on full volume for 5 - 10 minutes. On my 9570 i have replaced one time the speakers. And a week ago as I turned on full volume the left speaker started to rattle again. When I had 9560 model I checked the broken speaker and it turned out the coil was not glued to membrane. That is why the speaker rattles, But what is strange it always happens with the left speaker. So 3 generations they use garbage speakers. Just so curious if the 2020 model is the same?
