Sending an Email with Ham Radio and APRS

Would you like to know how to send an email over ham radio? No internet access, no cell coverage and no computer needed. Let’s talk about why and let’s see how it works. For the demo, we’ll use a Kenwood D710GA.

Thanks. It’s pretty similar to sending text messages using SMSGTE, expect that it’s only one way communication. I find this method of sending email easier and requires less equipment than sending email via Winlink. If I recall, you have a D710 as well. Give it a shot, it only takes a minute.

Thank you for the demo again! Could you include a link to “EMAIL-2” aprs protocol format reference? Glad to see your tactical aprs link in description - though lately I have looked for the “i” icon in the video to find related/mentioned videos. IDK how to do that - but do find them helpful! 👏👍

Great video! I looked for something like this when I first got my D710. Never found one and had to figure it out. This is so simple and to the point. Have you considered adding more videos about D710 regarding how to locate near by APRs'rs

If I recall correctly, I made two videos on finding other APRS stations using APRSDroid (kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHK8lWN7m9-AqLs) and an old Garmin (kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3WyZ4J-oJ2GbLc)

Hello: I have the Kenwood TM-D710G plus the DigiRig sound card, and want to use this with Vara FM. Have you done this before? Getting the 710 to activate the DigiRig transmit is proving difficult. Perhaps you could try this set up with Vara FM for one of your videos? Many thanks, Robert Chambers 8P6RC and VE3BEO

I have but I did not take any notes and no longer have this system running. I tested the following combination successfully: TM-D710GA, DigiRig Mobile, Windows 10, Winlink Express (VARA FM). I was able to connected to VARA Winlink gateway on 2m about 19 miles North of my location earlier in the year. I am not a VARA user as I don't run Windows. If VARA stables under Linux in the future, I will make a video. These days I am only running AX.25 packet and ARDOP (HF).

I’m only familiar with amateur radio in the US, but I did a quick Google search and it looks like APRS is available in Australia. www.aprs.net.au
