Yeah if they could only get on top of their years-old bug reports, abysmal support and documentation (partly because they keep “improving” things with buggy features) and overall poor price to performance… let’s not even talk about the linux cloud key distro not being maintained or them pushing customers on cloud features they don’t need or want… ubiquiti is garbage, let’s be real.

I feel like supply shortages caused by covid hurt them especially when more and more people where bored building out higher end home networks. As well as businesses upgrading networks to help work from home setups. I think now that Ubiquiti seems to have solved most of their supply issues. They are doubling down on new hardware and the software is also taking a huge step forward.

@@stultuses I doubt it they were never a home customer product. But I see there small business gear still being used for higher end home setups for a long time. and they will always have the ones like me that have $3000+ setups at home because we want better professional consumer products than anyone else. Hell the setup I just set up on my family farm was about $15,000 so far with cameras. they thought it was too much and after telling them for years they wish they said yes sooner.

This has been such an interesting few years. We are a mid sized MSP in Australia. We’ve been using UniFi for close to when they launched in Australia. To see their progression has been quite the experience. Not having visibility to their roadmap has led to plenty of head scratching, but it all seems to be coming to fruition now. As for a subscription, we have a new client with a SonicWall subscription for an EOL product. The yearly fee is more than a fully decked out UDM SE x 2. Our Meraki clients have devices that will brick after the subscription ends. I see no issue with optional subscription fees for advanced features. And as an MSP with clients who use laptops, then protection and filtering is done on the endpoint and whilst we may use basic filters at the perimeter, the days when all our risks could be contained inside that perimeter are long gone.

look in to Cloudflare service called FireWall as a Service for FWaaS. I work for an MSP here in California and we dont deploy SonicWall or Meraki any longer as the total cost of ownership is just crazy expensive now. We use EdgeRouters or UDM's and use Cloudflare to filter everything at the WAN. The on-prem firewall does almost nothing as far as filtering and honestly the ease and repeatability of deployment and ability to remotely manage the firewall too. Game changer for us.

Same! Lots of my business clients are running pfsense but I’ve put in quite a few UDM SEs and been loving the hardware and I think this 9.0 just sealed the deal on the software. Just bought a UDM Pro Max and the brand new 24 HD switch to “upgrade” my Netgate 6100 at my house.

4:20 - if you go here and pause, you'll see the image of the zone-based rule grid. Along the Y-axis (up & down) you have the source zone; left to right provides destination zones. So you'd do something like this: 1. Find IoT in the source and follow that across to your other zones (like default or trusted) 2. Click the button intersecting those and add a block rule. 3. Find Trusted in the source and IoT in destination, click the button, and add an allow rule. This is super generic, but that's the idea behind this interface.

I think if I was making the choice today I’d go with the unifi rather than the pfsense route I went a couple years ago. Not that I’ve had any issues at all with my pfsense setup, but I like the simplicity with being in the unifi ecosystem and having all my devices in one home.

Agreed. Having, worked with pfSense and UniFi I can say that UniFi feels much more "Apple/iOS" in that with little bit of effort it always "just works" whereas pfSense feels more like Linux in that it can do anything, and possibly better, however it is less "consumer/user friendly" and requires much more effort to configure and maintain. For us plebs that are non-IT business / non Enterprise admins, a 2025/9.0 Unifi firewall/security setup, including VLANs, IoT - Home Assistant, maybe even AP/hardware ideas/suggestions (knowing that every deployment is different) would be a killer video or series. Unifi's new zone based firewalls and also the moves they are making with 3rd party camera support in Protect have really made me glad it is where I decided to put my money for my home networks. Also, on the proofpoint thing - I actually like seeing these value added (even for a cost) features being added. Even if I (don't think) proofpoint is needed for my soho network.

I am Cisco CCIE, CISSP, Meraki, HPE, ITiL, HIPAA and PCI certified engineer for almost 30 years. I go back to the PIX days for firewalls and then it was definitely a different story. Today, I hope to see more home users start using small UniFi devices for edge security now that they have made it easier for home users with this update. Big box store firewalls are great but no one ever really spend time to set them up correctly and therefore bots become prolific. Segmenting IoT devices, guest network, etc. is easy to do and yet overlooked so much it makes me sad.

Hey Tom, I was wondering how you would compare the current version of Unifi router/firewall against pfsense? As a Unifi network owner but also pfsense router owner I would be highly interested in that. For instance, in pfsense, I have 2 WAN connections and some policies around what client goes out over which WAN line as well as a general failover pool. Would that work with Unifi? Also, I have a subnet of public IPs assigned for hosting a couple of services. How's that looking in Unifi? And more :)

Using UniFi on my UDM SE in my home lab, and so far, it looks pretty promising! One thing I wish for, though, is the ability to delete default rules. Hoping they improve this!

I'm honestly waiting for UI to implement support for 6in4 or similar tunnels natively instead of having to use telnetdoogie's boot script for the HE TunnelBroker service. Right now that setup is absolutely awful and causes my ipv6 tunnel to only have like 200kbps and is god awful to use since the ip stack preference usually does ipv6 first.

The Zone Based Firewall feature is awesome, but after selecting it, I was not able to move my IoT network to the DMZ zone. Evidently since the network was imported at activation to the Internal zone, you are not allowed to move the network to a different zone. I ended up restoring from backup to the old firewall rules until this is resolved.

I love the direction they are taking having 8 unifi sites that I manage. If you are doing a deep dive on the ZBF - I would love to see you cover the firewall implications of using the firewall with larger networks using L3 switches like the Agg pro and campus switches. This is where I think they still need to do some work as currently if you move a vlan to be routed by an L3 switch it disappears from the ZBF management interface. It doesn't even show up as an external zone nor can you add it to a zone to define policies. This forces you to route all the traffic up to your UDM / UXG / Etc as I have found that port forwards to vlans my switch route do not seem to work no matter how you try and define External Internal / External rules. The rest of it is absolutely amazing work, just a lot of opportunities for additional function. For instance simply give the ability to take a VLAN managed by unifi and routed by a switch to be put into a zone so you can easily create rule sets for when it transitions through the firewall internal zone on it's way to the WAN interface ;)

When I segment a network I usually provide my client with a "security matrix" that is very much alike what Unifi is doing with Zones. But having that kind of 'matrix' directly on the firewall will be much easier to implement them and follow them afterward when a audit is done. I too am changing my mind about their firewall and might have to buy one to check that out.

The proofpoint service is not a deal breaker because the firewall still has updated ET threat data which is just as good honestly. The proof point exists so they can enter a business segment where the third party support is a pre-req by a businesses security design (offload liability). As long as we equally see continued development on their other product lines I feel they are moving in the right direction.

For me the threat intelligence feed is important and you need to have a constant update. People don't understand the cost it's to maintain and keep track of the threats out there in a timely fashion. I liked Pfsense before it was locked in and the world in a sense was easier when it comes to security. But now days i prefer a firewall which blocks most of the unwanted traffic as possible, before it enters the users hardware.

FW is getting better, however 2 requirements I could not implement which would make my life easier: zone FW would be better at Site Manager level, so I can create rules between site A and site B without the need to maintain rulesets on both UDM. Also, I could not find a way to create/modify default security posture (allow all/block all) for existing and new zone. Duplicating rules would be nice too. To be clear, whilst I do miss my PFsense firewalls, network 9 is significantly reducing my frustration with FW rule management. Big step forward !

I will say they have come leeps and bounds on new features some I have no need for but thats just me. Other people may need it. Super easy to admin, being an IT Admin for over 25 years I will say this is easier that cisco or any other system.

I'm hoping for a flow-based configuration UI similar to Node-RED eventually, it just makes so much sense for VLANs and networking in general to get a visual overview! I'm going to update now and check this out, looks good!

Still no support for multiple WAN ip blocks? I would love to switch but that combined with their half baked DHCP server stuff makes it a non starter.

I would like to see features like an IP address being automatically blocked because it has made z number of failed attempts to get into the network and the blocked IP being communicated to all the other firewalls in your fabric

The new firewall in Network is nice. Though I am not gonna lie I would love for an integration now between pfsense and Ubiquiti. Let me setup my VLANs once and use pfsense to do that, setup my rules, etc but have UniFi import them so it’s seemless. If someone isn’t running pfsense on their own environment then UniFi firewall is finally ready for that now vs going “oh gee Scoob I hope that bad guy doesn’t come for us.” Pre Network 9 it was kind of a crap shoot. Now it’s better. Also I don’t super give a damn about their endpoint subscription. If the first year was included maybe but nah not really.

I'm going to go with (and this is coming from a UDMSE owner)..."Come so far...but still have a long way to go". They need to get their IPv6 feature set to match their IPv4 feature set. For example, as of the last time I tried the early release (about a month ago), DPI still didn't work properly with IDing IPv6 traffic which makes block traffic rules effectively useless in a dual stack environment.

Considering that i have pfSense thanks to Tom, I'm assuming this is geared for people that don't have a firewall like pfSense and need one to setup. So this wouldn't be for me.

I don't know how Unifi arrange their updaes but there's a degree of frustration that you cannot merely apt update, and that include all the necessary database updates and pre-requisities. Using third party scripts to handle this just feels clumsy, despite how much effort is clearly put into them. If they're going to push the management software, it should be easy to install and manage.

I just don't want to see Ubiquiti take some of their built-in features that could be off-loaded to a 3rd party that will charge a subscription. This will eventually leave Ubiquiti with just making the equipment and once you purchase it, during setup you'll just pick and choose what you want, get the monthly subscription total, and pay before you finish the setup, all while paying Apple pricing for the equipment.

i still think ubiquiti is not enterprise ready and only really good for small businesses and prosumers, i still have nightmares from the time they put cheap usb sticks as ROM memory for their "Enterprise" NVR's when gen 1 was released.

I think they are really pushing into enterprise and not just in the features they offer. I have appreciated the new features but they are steadily pushing up the prices of their products to a more enterprise level. The old U6 Enterprise is sold for about $280 where the new E7 is $500. The UDMs as well. The UDM Pro is $380 where the new Pro Max that adds another drive bay and a slightly faster processor is $600. Yes they have newer devices but they are either slower than the older gear and meant to be more entry level or they are pushing north of $1000.

People complaining about The CyberSecure Subscription being as if Ubiquity Broke a sub-free promise is the same as saying they broke it because you have to pay monthly to your ISP for internet service. If the people crying foul over the former can't wrap their head around the sheer stupidity of that argument and see sense, then maybe those same people need to change career to something else. - My Hot Take.
